With the recent surge in adult cellular content, the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) has begun defining a standardized rating system that will eventually be applied to all content offered on wireless networks.
"The adult side of things has really kick-started it," says Mark Desautels, CTIA VP of wireless Internet development. "As indecency becomes an increasing point of interest on the part of policymakers, we really need to be proactive about it."

Taking a step closer to an IPO, Virgin Mobile USA has hired investment banks Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) to value a flotation of the company.
A joint venture between U.S. cell phone carrier Sprint Corp. and Virgin Mobile Holdings, the company run by British entrepreneur Richard Branson, press reports have valued a flotation of around $2 billion.

T-Mobile USA has added street-level coverage maps of its wireless network. Using an 11-point rating system, users can enter an address or intersection to check maps and predict wireless coverage area outdoors.
Meant as a guide, the maps do not guarantee service availability, even within a coverage area. This Earth Day, April 22, 2005, EarthWorks is launching the "Recycle My Cell Phone Campaign." The Campaign's goal is to collect 1 million cell phones in one year. Sprint has signed Wi-Fi high-speed wireless service roaming agreements with four broadband Internet service providers and a virtual network enabler which will increase the number of Wi-Fi hotspots available to customers to more than 19,000 including extensive international connectivity. Surprising markets today, Nokia reported double-digit growth in the first quarter and raised its earlier estimate of the global mobile handset market in 2005 to 740 million units.
