Planning to offer on-site repair shops in more than half its stores by mid March, Sprint will be the first cell phone carrier to open dedicated technical facilities at its retail locations.

Outages plagued Danger yesterday as some Sidekick users reported no service to their email instant messaging, and other data services. The severity of the issues varied throughout a 24 hour span, however most customers reporting no issues.
Danger, creator of the Sidekick and Sidekick 2, maintains service for carrier T-Mobile USA.

South Korean cell phone manufacturer, LG Electronics, announced that it has successfully completed testing of its ultra-fast next-generation handsets on high-speed network provided by Canadian partner, Nortel Networks.

Circulating among Symbian Series 60 phones is the first virus to spread using the popular Mobile Messaging Service (MMS).
Spotted by antivirus companies today, the new virus, dubbed CommWarrior A, uses MMS to spread copies of itself to contacts in the address book. Potential targets then receive MMS messages with file attachments containing the virus. MIRS Communication, an Israeli wireless company, has decided to cater towards a demographic largely neglected by major cell phone companies; the one-million-strong ultra-Orthodox Jews.

This Thursday at CeBIT, Motorola plans to announce the first handsets that will carry Apple's popular iTunes music software; hoping to get a jump on the newest competitive arena of cell phones capable of playing music.
Motorola CEO Ed Zander forged an alliance with old pal and Apple CEO Steve Jobs last year to capitalize on the growing shift to music phones in 2005 from the saturated market of camera phones of 2004.

Verizon Wireless and Qwest Communications today announced they have completed the transaction, previously announced in July 2004, for Verizon Wireless to purchase Qwest Wireless' spectrum licenses and certain network assets for $418 million. These licenses will increase Verizon Wireless' capacity in key existing markets as well as expand the company's network into new markets.

Motorola announced that Gartner Inc. affirmed the company's position as the world's second-largest handset manufacturer. The company commented following the release of Gartner's 2004 Market Share Report. The report estimates Motorola's fourth quarter 2004 global market share to be 16.3% based on sales to end users.
