Mobile-computing pioneer Palm, Inc. and software pioneer Microsoft Corp. today announced a strategic alliance to accelerate the smartphone market segment with a new device for mobile professionals and businesses. Palm has licensed the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system for an expanded line of Treo smartphones, the first of which will be available on Verizon Wireless' national wireless broadband network. The news was revealed in a press conference with Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm, Inc.; Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft Corp.; and Denny Strigl, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless.

Access Co., a global provider of mobile content delivery and Internet Access software, and PalmSource, provider of Palm OS, a leading operating system powering next generation phones and mobile devices, today announced they have signed a definitive agreement for Access to acquire PalmSource in an all-cash transaction valued at USD $18.50 per share of PalmSource common stock, or approximately USD $324.3 million. Access' USD $18.50 per share offer represents an 83% premium for PalmSource stockholders based on the market closing price of USD $10.09 on September 8, 2005.

PalmSource has joined MontaVista's Mobilinux Open Framework partner program; and MontaVista has joined PalmSource's Palm Powered Mobile World (PPMW) program. As partners, MontaVista and PalmSource can leverage their collective expertise to create integrated solutions for handset vendors and mobile operators looking to build Linux handsets.

PalmSource, provider of Palm OS operating system, today announced that LG Electronics has signed an agreement to license Palm OS worldwide. Under terms of the agreement, LG Electronics can develop and market smartphones based on Palm OS.
