Nokia and Siemens today announced that they will combine their telecommunications network equipment units in a joint venture, a move to help them compete with market leader Ericsson.
The new venture, called Nokia Siemens Networks, which combines Nokia's Networks unit and Siemens' carrier-related operations, had 2005 pro forma revenues of 15.8 billion euros and 60,000 employees. Based on current market share data, it will be the second largest company in mobile infrastructure, second in services, third in fixed infrastructure, and the third largest in the overall telecommunications infrastructure market.

BenQ Mobile today launched the EF91, the world's first mobile to carry HSDPA technology. HSDPA stands for "High Speed Downlink Packet Access," which describes a technology that enables a data transfer speed in the UMTS network that is several times faster than the conventional standard. BenQ Mobile, the new business group of BenQ Corporation, today unveiled its new consumer brand BenQ-Siemens to a global audience and set out a 2006 strategy for asserting its position in the mobile handset industry.

Siemens recently succeeded in completing the first live data transfer with SkyMAX, a new end-to-end WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) solution based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard, in its test lab in Milan, Italy. Siemens has signed an exclusive contract with Airbus to jointly develop a solution for the use of in-flight communication via GSM. Siemens will provide the GSM technology, while Airbus will take charge of its integration in the existing electronics systems.
