Sprint today introduced a new service to help parents use a phone to pinpoint the location of a child on a map. Tracked via cell phone, parents can also program the service to automatically send them a text message at a specific time each day to confirm the children have arrived at home or in school.
Sprint's new Family Locator service shows data such as street addresses where the child is close to and the estimated accuracy of the reading, which could range from a radius of 2 yards around the child to a radius of hundreds of yards.

Sprint Nextel today announced plans to expand and upgrade its existing Sprint Power Vision broadband network to EV-DO Revision A.
Up to 10 times faster than the current Power Vision network, the planned EV-DO Revision A technology upgrade increases peak download data rates to 3.1 Mbps (from 2.0) and peak upload data rates to 1.8 Mbps (from 144 kbps). Average download speeds improve to 450-800 kbps (from 400 -700) and average uplink speeds become 300 - 400 kbps (versus 70 - 144 kbps).

Sprint Nextel today launched a local cell phone directory service to find information such as nearby restaurants, driving directions, and movie times.
The $2.99 a month service, called "Find It!," combines GPS (Global Positioning System) and directory information from InfoSpace to let users search out locations without having to enter a postal code or even know where they are. Sprint today announced two new plans that would allow its customers to make or receive unlimited calls between their cell phone and a pre-designated home or office number, regardless of their wireline carrier, without deducting minutes from their wireless service plans.
The consumer option costs $5 per month, and business customers with a rate plan of $49.99 or higher could add it for $8 per month.

Sprint today announced a partnership with MTV Networks to bring hit music, comedy and entertainment programming from CMT, MTV, VH1, and Comedy Central to Sprint TV. In addition to offering subscribers select clips, Sprint becomes the first domestic wireless service to stream the CMT, MTV and VH1 radio stations.

Sprint announced it is launching Picture Mail groups this spring, the first picture groups service designed with the mobile phone user in mind, making the sharing of pictures and video clips from a mobile phone to an online community a smooth, hassle-free process.
Sprint PCS Picture Mail subscribers will be able to create an online community and invite friends with an email address or Sprint phone to add pictures, video clips and text of their own at no additional cost.

Today Sprint announced the results of its U.S. Consumer Wireless Usage Study, a nationwide survey of wireless phone users. The findings show that more than half of wireless phone subscribers (56 percent) rely on their mobile phones for features such as cameras, clocks, calendars, messaging, music and as a substitute flashlight for seeing in dark places.

Sprint Nextel today announced the details of its participation in the Federal Communications Commission's Katrina Lifeline Program. Through the program, eligible customers in the 92 Gulf Coast counties and parishes affected by Hurricane Katrina will be able to apply for a free wireless phone and service. Existing Sprint Nextel customers affected by the hurricane who qualify for the program will receive a credit of 500 minutes for four months from the date of activation.
