Looking for an inexpensive camera phone?
Reviewer: rs2k on Fri Oct 08, 2004
Just got two new Audiovox CDM-9900 handsets from Verizon yesterday. My wife and I were nearing the end of a 2-year and with NE2 decided to get new hardware. Spent a lot of time reading all kinds of reviews on every current camera phone available from Samsung, LG, and good ole' Moto. Never thought I'd own an Audiovox, but just couldn't turn a deaf ear to all the positive remarks made by people who've bought the 9900 since it debuted on Oct. 1st.
Basically this is a solid phone with all the features that 99% of us will ever really use. It's comfortable to hold and the reception is crystal clear. Have yet to prove the battery life, but the specs are amazing at 3.33 hours talk time and 15 days in digital standby. Even if the battery only lasts half as long as they say, it will still be as good as any other handset out there.
The menus are speedy, easy to navigate, and very intuitive. In fact, I activated the phone and went right to work customizing - Haven't even had to open the owner's manual yet. Sufficient selection of ringers and alerts. Good calendar layout. The phonebook is formatted nicely. Easy to use camera functions. And the speakerphone actually works - unlike most phones that are so muffled you can't even hold a conversation. And did I mention the main display?? Absolutely gorgeous!
My only complaint is the lack of after-market accessories like a data cable and desktop charger. No doubt this is due to the fact that the phone just began shipping one week ago. Will continue my search as I will not pay Verizon's outrageous prices for these necessary extras.
Verizon is offering the 9900 for under $50 until 10/11/04. After that, it's anyone's guess. If you're looking for a solid phone with a decent camera and an awesome display, I suggest you get in on the promo. Enjoy!

A lot of phone for the money
Reviewer: bigdcroxton on Tue Oct 19, 2004
I've been testing the VX7000 while my son is very impressed by his Audiovox CDM9900. It has a very intuitive interface, much easier to use than my VX7000. It also has a better camera and a speaker phone and all for $49 compared to the $179.99 price tag for the VX7000. The only negative my son and I have noticed is the buttons are smaller than they need to be because there's plenty of room the engineers could have doubled their size without any trouble. Sound quality is good both in the ear and ringer tones. He also likes the fact when he sets the phone to vibrate it automatically silences the keypad so if you receive a txt message while in the theater he can respond without bothering anyone. I may go with this phone as well.

Nice phone, a bit fragile feeling....
Reviewer: trobinson017 on Mon Nov 29, 2004
Just got 2 new CDM 9900 phones for the wife and I. My first impressions after trying the Samsung A660 and Motorola V300 were: 1. large. it's the heaviest and largest of the 3 phones. 2. Cheap feel. The plastic battery cover flexes giving it a cheap feel. Also, the rubberized buttons add to the cheap feel.
Apart from that I'm pretty impressed with the phone. The large main display is the biggest I've ever seen and has brilliant colors and resolution. The clarity is excellent and the best of the 3 phones, including the speakerphone. The voicedial is excellent at interpreting your voice (never had to struggle to make my voice clear enough) but I do wish it had "digit dial" like the Samsung. This allows you to simply speak digits and the phone will dial them. Great for when you remember a number while driving but don't have it saved for voice dial. I've played around with the camera and video and it's okay; good enough for the quick pic or memory moment. The flash however sucks. You have to be inches away from the subject for it to illuminate. But what can you expect for a cellphone????? I also like that I can set the outer LCD picture to be different than the main LCD display. Multiple levels of customization is nice!!
All in all, a very good phone and DEFINITELY worth the $49 price with 2 year Verizon activation (not a plug). Wish the darned data cable weren't so expensive tho.

I love this phone. im 14 and i've had A LOT of phones and carriers, but my dad works for verizon, so i've had alot of there phones. i had the lg vx6000,vx7000,vx8000, and the samsung a670. i only really liked the lg vx7000 becouse of its flashing multi-colored bright lights, im a sucker for lights. and the vx6000 and vx8000 had horrable cameras, and the samsungs hinge cracked and shattered. ive had all the cingular samsung and lg camera phones(especially liked the samsung p107-swivel camera, and it was sturdy), i liked the samsungs becouse of the multi-colored service lights-it amuses me. i've had sprint also, but only one phone, the sanyo pm-8200. well when i switched to verizon i started off with a leftover vx6000 and so on. anyway the 9900 is the best phone ever and i can careless about it having no flashing lights or the best outer lcd screen. it is a big phone, great camera, good video, and i love the menu, becouse it actually has icons(unlike the sanyo pm-8200). im am speechless when it comes to the inner screen-its so big and bright/clear! the reception is great where i live, and i almost never extend the antenna. the phone is sturdy. i guess? its battery door sucks, but i got a new one with a faceplate. im not into video or ringtones though, my ringer is like an office phone, kind of and videos arn't that fun becouse of the 15 second limit. i didnt get this phone new. i bought it on ebay becouse ive had like every phone verizon has to offer, and belive me your not missing anything. i think i actually really like this phone though. ive had it for about a month and im still not bored with it. i hope this helped.

Great phone overall, moneywise & physical - THOROUGH rev
Reviewer: MJM on Wed Dec 29, 2004
Pros:
- Vibrant & LARGE color display
- Well-lit screens, and keypad
- Excellent options as far as customizations, i.e. Color front screen, customizable backgrounds for both screens, menu backgrounds, etc.
- Comfortable feel
- Sleek design
- Good reception, great clear speakers
- Beautiful sounding ringtones
- Long lasting battery life / talk-time
- Great camera
- Customizable faceplates
- Great photo space, and video space
Cons:
- If the speakerphone is turned up to max volume, it sounds a bit distorted. Make sure you have the speakerphone set in the middle volume button, then it sounds OK.
- Phone does not have JUST vibrate option, or vibe & ring
- While in "vibrate" mode, keypad does not make noise.
- Good camera, but flash is a little weak.
- Ringtones aren't the best, but if you have "get it now" you don't have to worry
- WHOLE keypad is BLUE, not green red & blue, not a HUGE deal, but would be nice.
Sorry that my review is so through, but trust me, I'd rather be safe than sorry, and I hope that you take this into consideration. All the CONS I've learned to get over, and it's not hard, because most of them don't affect performance, and they're easy to adapt to.

some of the same problems as above
Reviewer: missroxy on Thu Jul 21, 2005
My little red light flashed constantly, also without any outstanding messages etc... I did not know until one of the above reviews what was going on.
My belt clip constantly let the phone fall to the ground etc...
Alas, mr phone fell in the dirt last night and may have been run over.
I bought the phone because I thought it was sturdy and also took pics...
After its ordeal, the phone still works, but the inside screen is ruined.
Guess it held up well under the circumstances, but if it had a better clip it would not have fallen in the first place.
When I purchased the phone, I tried to look for a different clip and could not find one.
Now, the insurance company is having to replace my phone with a lgvx7000. Lets hope it is a good one.

Purchased it on the 1st, tried to get rid of it on the 2nd
Reviewer: LS1V8GTO on Wed Feb 09, 2005
I was just finishing up on my New every 2 plan and I had an old CDM 2000 flip from verizon and it was great, ahead of its time for 2002 and always had good reception (by that I mean it stayed in Digital 99% of the time, here on Staten Island, NYC service isnt too good for some reason). The night before i was going to buy the CDM 8910 I found this one on their website and after research which found nothing negative, the next day I went ahead and bought this one.
Whoops and What a Mistake!
That very night after i brought it to my house it began to constantly switch from 1X to Analog, not good, as the phone only seems to function in 1X, Analog might as be as good as no service. I immediately went to the manual to see if I could force digital or to see if I was doing something wrong. The manual says the phone has an all digital setting but I have not been able to figure out how that one works since it is not in the manual. After a night of constantly dropped calls, I turned it off and resigned myself to going back to verizon the next day.
In bringing it back to the store they had told me the phone needed some updates but that would work after, so I said ok whatever, 5 minutes later I had my phone back again, only to once again try to make a call and have it drop 11 seconds into the call. About an hour later I received a txt message and after I cleared it the red LED flashed for hours indicating I had a new message, all this with no messages to speak of on the phone or in my voicemail.
Two days later I went back to verizon and they told me Audiovox pulled the 9900 because of an unexplained incompatibility with their network, and that since my 15 day period expired they could only give me a phone of a lesser value than the $49 it was paid for on the first of august, which I would not settle for. I went to a different store and I was told that the phones were pulled but Audiovox had re-released them and they would be in within a week, so i gave them my number and I came back a week later.
I get my new phone, it looks the same, feels a bit heavier, but nevertheless I give it a try. The LED problem was fixed, once a message was erased, the light stopped flashing, and the camera/video features seem to work quicker too, as well as transfer from menu to menu. One problem still persists, once I get down to 1 bar of 1X service my call is as good as gone, analog still functions as good as no service as well.
I live in NYC, service this dispickable shouldn't exist, I cant blame the service as people who live in the same area as I do have different phones with much better reception. But I guess I am stuck with this thing for another 19 months. PATHETIC
