In reply to jonesbm's question below, I also purchased a USB cable from an online shop to transfer data between phone and computer. It simply didn't work, even after I downloaded a driver for it (The cable was claimed to work specifically with the CU500). I finally gave up and bought a new USB cable from Cingular ($40 for the cable and earphones) and it worked perfectly out of the box. Costs a little more, but well worth it.

One other thing to note is that in many forums, people have mentioned that you should buy the microSD memory card only from Sandisk. Other brands don't seem to work with the CU500. And don't buy anything with greater than 1GB capacity since the phone will not recognize it as anything larger than 1GB. After my experience with the USB cable, I decided to stop experimenting. I am happy to say that the Sandisk 1GB card works beautifully with the USB cable from Cingular icon_smile.gif

By the way, great phone too. I didn't like the ascending ring tone at first, but I have now grown used to it.

So, I got this phone outright from Wal-Mart for under $200, which is great! Here's what I think of the phone:

PROS
very fast internet/downloads
bright internal and external screens that are easily seen in sunlight
many personalization options for pretty much everything
1.3 mp camera is nice
video is really actually good quality for a phone
voice recorder is nice
expandable memory (I have 1 gb card)
VERY loud earpiece & speakerphone (accessed by one button...nice!)
easy shortcuts to other applications
mp3 player is nice, sounds great
good solid feel in hand and comfortable on ear without pressing hard
signal is great
can switch from 3G only/2G only/dual modes, which is very convenient
everything loads VERY fast on phone (pics, mp3 player, etc.)

CONS
no flash for camera (must be in good lighting to take good pics)
ascending ring is not that bad really, but I wish there were an option for it
battery life for me was not good...charge every night
no USB cable included (more on that in a sec...)
no headphones to plug in or place to put them...only headset

THE WORST OF ALL
Ok...so I enjoy transferring pics/mp3's from my computer to my phone, and vice versa. BUT, when I got the phone, it didn't come with any USB cable or anything, so I bought one online. I got it home, plugged it up, and it doesn't recognize the phone as even being there. It recognizes the cable, but not the phone at all, therefore, it is impossible to do this. If anyone has any help with this, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Other than that, this phone really gets about a 9 out of 10. Good phone first, good camera in good lighting conditions, GREAT volume on earpiece/speaker/speakerphone, and good overall features. And it's SUPER FAST! If you can figure out how to transfer the pics/mp3's from the phone to the computer, get this phone!!!.....and let me know how!!!! icon_smile.gif

Overall, the phone which I purchased in early August is a good everyday phone. Features are great, 3G is nice when available, and design is acceptable.

I upgraded from another LG phone - the g4050 - so the on-screen interface and keying were similar making it easy to navigate - and it should be easy for anyone else to figure out. The external screen has a nice feature for accessing the phone's major features - camera, video, and mp3 player - so you don't have to open the clamshell. The internal screen size and quality is pretty good and should hold its own in comparison to other similar phones on the market.

The speaker feature and its one-button accessibility on calls allows you to set the phone down on a table to talk. The sound quality for music/ringtones was fairly clear, while the sound quality for voice was acceptable. It seemed like I had to adjust to the speaker quality when having phone conversations - some voices sometimes sounded a little harsh in comparison with my old LG phone, but I don't seem to notice now as often.

This is my first camera phone so that is a plus, the quality of images is acceptable, image transfer is easy, but I wish it was a 2 megapixel camera and not a 1.3 megapixel camera. The external screen and rotating camera lets you either shoot images clandestinely or lets your subjects see the image at the same time. Shooting video via a cellphone proved to be fun - but if you make it a regular habit, get a bigger microSD card (especially if you use the mp3 player). I didn't use the mp3 features that much so I cannot speak too much for those features, but easy to plug in headphones - or better yet, get a wireless Bluetooth Stereo headphone like Jabra's.

3G is great for internet access and video (mainly for news and sports) when available. Speed is usually really good when you get 3G, but you notice a substantial drop-off when going to the next level down. Availability seems to be getting better. Check the Cingular 3G map on their website - it seems fairly accurate from my experience. It sucks that this phone does not have a built in email feature. I use a web-based email interface through its browser but it cannot be sized for the cellphone screen size so lots of scrolling. If you have web-mail that can be sized for a small handheld screen size, then it should work well especially with the 3G connection.

The phone is relatively compact - and not a total rip-off of the Razr. Seems almost as sexy as the Samsung version on Sprint. Not as wide, but a little thicker. The phone features have been integrated well into the clamshell form factor - better then I think the Razr (on Verizon) which I tested for a week. The phone feels durable and has a good deal of a metal finish.

A few specific issues: 1) I can't say for sure, but either incoming calls when you are on a call have no signal or a very soft signal that I miss sometimes. It doesn't happen often, but several times, I only see a second call when I look at the screen after the first call is over; 2) Changing ringtone volume or going from ringtone to vibrate requires you to hold the phone side button until the end of the notification signal. It took awhile, but initially, I switched/adjust the phone signal many times, but it did not seem to catch. It wasn't until I looked at the screen in detail to watch the symbols change that I realized that it would not change until the end of playing the notification signal AND you have to be pressing the side button at the end of the notification signal. 3) After about two months of use, I noticed that a small raised edge on the front of phone was getting worn down and lost its black finish. I take good care of the phone so was a little surprised to notice this. Otherwise, the phone holds up well physically.

Overall, I would rate the phone a B+ and would recommend it with a few complaints/caveats noted above.

I bought this phone off of ebay a month ago and it came with 1gb memory card. I love this phone. It has a great speaker to listen to mp3's on and loud for ringers.
I have 200 songs on my phone and still have room for more. this is the reason i bought the phone, so i can listen to music at work without having to carry a phone and a ipod. this does both. Picture quality is good, i like the way it feel when i flip phone open. easy to navigate thru menu of phone. i can make my own ringtones out of songs or use some i find on internet for free. Bluetooth works great my friend has US Cellular and transfers songs to my phone.
dont have 3g service so i cant try that. mp3 buttons on outside of phone easy to use. i dont like the way ringers ascend when phone rings. working on hack to fix it. i like how you can put movies on phone. fast phone, no lag, camera swivles is neat.
better than razr nicer and cooler. great phone. A+A+A+A+

An update to my original review about the LG CU500
By calling until I found the guy who knew what he was talking about, I have finally gotten my Cingular connection/signal strength issues sorted out. Now I can concentrate on how I feel about the phone itself.

I am sending it back. If the 6682 were a clamshell, then I would probably get that. I may return to Verizon with my little LG 4600 and stay there contractless until Cingular's stock of HSDPA phones ripens.

Pros:
The CU500 is a nice phone with a good feel. Its very solidly built. The hinge is great, (As with my last LG, the vibrate does seem to have gotten a little louder over the past three weeks. It became stupidly loud with my last phone, so I may be over sensitive. Or maybe not.)

Great speakers! Some of the best I have heard. Not tinny at all.

Cons:
20% - 30% dropped calls. I work in a building in an office park less than 100 yards from the Interstate off ramp to a major airport. The coverage is so good that I don’t need a microwave oven to warm my lunch. Most people in my company have Cingular, but do not have these problems.

No Voice Dial. I had no idea how addicted I am to voice dial. Having a Bluetooth headset with no ability to voice dial just pours salt on my wounds.

There is no official support for PCSync, nor for a plain USB cable for using the phone as a mass storage device. I strongly suspect that the cable for the 320 can be used, but both LG and Cingular scoff at me for even asking.

No flash for the camera.

The camera is worse than the no-name 1MP digital camera I bought off a guy on the street back in 2000 for $40. Today as I left my office building I saw a hummingbird get caught in a spider web. It was forty minutes past noon, the sky was clear and the images are as dark as the abyss. I cursed and freed the bird.

Bluetooth 1.2. This one is my fault. I asked the Cingular tech what version of Bluetooth was on the phone and he told me 2.0. Why would I ask instead of doing the research? Why didn’t I ask five techs and take the one with the highest number of votes? Pure laziness on my part.

The LG CU500 is not a “Smartphone” according to Cingular and thus is not eligible for the $20/month unlimited rate. Being a dumber-than-a-rock phone, I would have to pay $70/month. Of course, since there is no USB cable for the CU500, the point is moot.

I received my LG CU500 about 30hrs ago and I love it, conditionally.

I was looking for a phone that would act as a phone, a digital audio player and an occasional (3-4 times a month) modem for my laptop. Those were the requirements. I did a lot of research both thru online forums and talking to multiple Cingular reps to discover that this was definitely the phone for me. They suggested the SmartConnect plan ($20/month) for the modem ability, and said I would be able to transfer files via bluetooth or the data transfer cable that I used with my old LG VX4600.

My phone arrived via FedEx and I immediately had an issue with the port of my Verizon number. The sim card was programmed with the wrong number and I had to schlep over to a corporate store and spend two hours getting it fixed. bleh. They got it working and I went home to play. That fulfilled requirement #1.

I downloaded communications manager to set the phone up as a modem. No dice. I futzed with it and found that while I was able to see the phone via bitpim, neither communications manager, nor XP seemed to see it. The next morning I talked to Cingular and they told me that I needed the $80 plan to use Communications Manager, that my phone “does not contain the technology to allow it to act as a modem”, and that my phone would not be able to act as a modem until Communications Manager is upgraded. The last two statements were made by the same person.

I was so flummoxed that I didn’t remember to ask how to connect to it as a simple mass storage device. So, at the moment I am unable to do anything I really want to do with the phone except call people. Apparent Cingular tech support is closed on Sunday.

Warm fuzzies.

I got this phone about three weeks ago, and I absolutely love it. First of all, it is very loud, and has a great rotating camera. All of the pictues and videos that I take come out crisp and crystal clear. The feel is very solid and it has a great hinge. I haven't really tried the radio or Cingular Video, seeing as it warns me about massive data consumption. That gets me thinking about getting an unlimited internet plan for $20/month. All of my friends tell me that they love my phone, and they all want one. So far, I did not find any flaws in this phone and I recommend it to anybody who has Cingular.

if you have unlimited text you can just send the pictures to your email. if you don't own a usb. i just got this phone and i personally hate the ascending sounds. i don't feel like having my phone on silent all the time either. nor do i like the text tones. i've downloaded some texts tones but it won't let use them. great phone though.

I haven't really let go of the 6682.

First of all to try to help the guy above me. You do not have to get a $65/mos plan to use the HSDPA. I am using it now w/ my $20/mos unlimited Internet. I have used it with my PDA/AXIM X50v and the speed is awesome. It is just a tic slower than my WiFi at home. It so impressive that I am thinking of foregoing the Cox Cable and go through Cingular's Broadband but I haven't linked it through my computer yet. Sadly, I need to carry around a BT adapter w/ my laptop to tap into the speed.

Not even compares to the 6682, namely the OS is like going back to Command Line OS. I realize that the OS is more common to what a regular phone has but doesn't compare w/ Symbian. Yes, I am so addicted to Symbian now.

The Camera is crude compared to the 6682

I really hate that the copied the Razr so closely. It's actually taller when its opened up since the top part is the full length versus 7/8 as the Razr where the top parts tucks into the second half. Not nearly as pretty as the Razr which makes it more irritating.

I bought this solely for the HSDPA purpose. I have read that there is bad reception. But I find it pretty good considering the 6682 is the only cell phone I have ever seen stay connected through 15 floors of an elevator chute at work, AMAZING. Some thanks goes to Cingular as well, but mostly to the 6682.

BTW, Google Mobile Maps is an awesome program a most have. Very addicting.

But, for some reason a pain in the Arse w/ the CU500 it requires you to allow permission everytime you have the program download. Much better on the 6682 since it doesn't require the redundant permission approval.

I am now wondering... Since Symbian OS is so flexible why can't HSDPA protocol software not be loaded on and fore go my step back in time OS. Wondering if I could keep Cingular SIM card in each phone as use them interchangeably.

Since a $200 one time cost would pay for itself after a few month if it replaces my Cable Broadband...?

Also wondering if the BT would be the narrow spot on the broadband???

Laterz
