LG VX5200 User Reviews

Great tri-mode reception, solid features.

Reviewer: oblio_arrow on Mon Jan 09, 2006

- Great Tri-Mode reception.
- No dropped calls.
- Life is GOOD.

This LG VX5200 is a Tri-Mode phone. This is significant because it can operate using Analog 800 signals as well as regular Digital CDMA 800/1900 signals. This allows the phone to stay connected in many scenarios where all-digital (dual-mode) phones may drop calls. The phone will automatically switch to analog mode if the digital signal becomes dangerously weak.

Personal experience: My old dual-mode LG VX6000 frequently dropped calls when inside buildings or while driving in rural areas. I still have Verizon, but since I have upgraded to the LG VX5200 tri-mode phone, I have not experienced a single dropped call; not on the road, not inside department stores, not even in my basement (where I used to not even be able to use my cell-phone at all).

I recommend a new tri-mode phone to anyone who ever frequently experienced dropped calls when using a dual-mode CDMA phone. The LG VX5200 was a great choice for me.

LG 5200-Piece of Crap

Reviewer: johnd88 on Thu May 03, 2007

We got one of these in October. In April, both screens went blue. We sent it back to Verizon and they sent us a re-furbished one. Two weeks later, both screens on this one went blue. Verizon said they could send us another one. I said two's enough, I want a different model. They said I have to return a third one before I can move on to another model. I told them to send me another model or I will move on to Cingular or T-Mobile.
Don't let them send you these pieces of crap!
Oh, and to get a different model, they wanted me to pay for shipping! Another round of protest made that charge disappear.
Fight the good fight!

LG VX 5200

Reviewer: kayshajo278 on Thu Sep 08, 2005

So after my long awaited... wait for this phone, it finally came out. For all of you considering this phone, I'll list what I found that should be known when looking at this phone.
- Not one of my real noticable things, but everyone else says the inside screen is bad. For me, it seems normal, nothing to complain about.
- The outside screen does not show picture ID when a person calls, that disappointed me.
- The voice commands are not used often, but they are pretty cool.
- The camera is like pretty much every other phone, not extremely clear, but it's a phone, it has better things to do.
- The menu style is different, simpler than LG's normal one, but I miss the old one.
- People have had complaints about the red menu bar, and it is changeable to blue, but the red does grow on you.
- One big plus I found was that there was a lot quicker access to regular things such as schedules by using the "shortcut button". And the message button too.
- Something that tends to annoy me as someone who used to own another LG, I usually use the "OK" button to select something, but on this phone it's used for changing things. A little confusing, but you can get used to it.
- I don't like that the menu bar only changes to red and blue. There are 4 different settings for display themes: default, business, tropical, and blue. The first three seem to be the same general idea of red and yellow, and blue is the only different one, changing everything blue (which I like best).

Those are the only things that really stand out for me. Reception isn't bad at all, better than my 3200. I haven't had any problems with calls or texts or service yet. I say it's a pretty good choice if you're looking for a phone that has a camera and other "extras", but still works with and has the LG style.

Do NOT Get this phone!

Reviewer: windwaker0909 on Thu Jul 12, 2007

I have had this model of phone for over a year now, with several problems. I have this phone with Verizon wireless, and they have replaced this phone three times! My first replacement was because the phone locked up at random times, especially when texting. They sent me a replacement which worked fine until about 4 months of having it, which then it started to have the EXACT SAME problems with it. They sent me yet ANOTHER replacement, which simply did not turn on. YET ANOTHER ONE, which I have right now, IS GETTING REPLACED because the screen stays black for about 25-40 seconds after opening the phone or pressing a button to bring it out of standby mode. They are replacing it with a LG VX5300 instead which I hope, will be much better. The only good thing about this phone is that it has excellent reception. I get 3 or 4 bars constantly throughout the city even in "dead zones". The battery life is very short. I will make a single call and the battery indicator will drop 2 bars. I do NOT recommend this phone.

Great mid-range phone

Reviewer: tmlfan81 on Thu Apr 20, 2006

It's been a long, long time since I've owned a post-paid wireless phone from one of the major companies. For the past year I've had a prepaid Cingular Go Phone (Sony Ericsson T237 I believe is the make/model). The difference between that and the VX5200 is like night and day. In comparison to other flip phones from Cingular and Verizon, I'd say this phone is fair mid-range model with a modest feature set.

To be frank, I wasn't expecting much when I went shopping for a new phone from Verizon. For nearly three years I worked for Cingular and swore off anything being pimped by Darth Vader. I had always thought their customer service and support was lacking, due in part to the fact I was an employee of Cingular and offered everyone I know a fair shake and reasonable deals during my tenure their. (Much better than what Verizon could typically offer at POS)

The phone is great - lightweight and easy to use. The menus are a tad clunky, but that's more or less getting accustomed to the methodology of LG versus Sony Ericsson, etc. I was a little worried that over time the outside casing would give into the regular wear and tear that most people tend to put their phones through, so I opted on getting a leather holser case. After about a week there is no visible signs of scratching from the case or signs of any real use. I'm sure after writing this I'll bump into a door frame and knock my phone from its case.

Call clarity for me has been great - due in part to the network Verizon has built up in my area. The clarity on my handset now versus previous stints with Cingular TDMA and GSM handsets is unmatched. Calls come in clear, but at times you are reminded that you are on a cell phone. I guess nothing is perfect.

The only noticable cons I have so far have more to do with how Verizon mitigates the whole adding of ringtones and wallpaper to your phone versus other carriers. My usual methods of adding tones and backgrounds are no longer possible, leaving me to order a data cable online through eBay. Here's hoping I don't effectively void any sort of warranty I have with the handset.

And as far as the camera goes - I've never been a huge fan of camera phones, but I've been without a camera during "those" moments. You know - those times where you wish you had something to snap a quick picture with. Sadly, though, the camera takes far too long to "warm up" prior to taking a quick photo.

Other than that, the phone is very reliable and easy to use. I split the duties of managing my contacts and making calls between the handset and a PDA, so I can't comment too much further on the features of this phone.

It's worth the two-year agreement.

Phone has tons of simple, stupid design flaws

Reviewer: Poisoned_Ivy on Sat Oct 28, 2006

I really wanted to upgrade my several-year-old base model LG phone and get a camera phone. After being mightily harrassed at the Verizon store by rabid employees, I hastily selected this one, since it looked very similar to my old model, but with a camera, which is just what I thought I wanted. Boy, was I wrong.

Firstly, the camera activation button is on the side of the phone. Perfectly placed to activate constantly in a purse or pocket. Currently I have 100 Studies In Black Of My Pocket saved- the stupid phone takes them constantly, automatically saves them and now it'll take forever to delete each wee black square individually. Whoever put that button there should be... well, forced to delete each wretched picture on everyone's phone they didn't mean to take. Plus, the photos I did try to take look, well, a lot like the inside of the pocket ones. Blurry. Black. Pointless. (I'm not exaggerating- I have literally 100 photos of the inside of my pocket saved, its the limit it can hold.)

Now, the voice dialing. Oh boy. To voice dial, you have to hit a button. Then you have to have a lengthy conversation with the stupid phone.

Phone:"Say a command."
Me: "Call someone."
Phone: "Say a name."
Me: "Harmony."
Phone: "Did you say... Tim?"
Me: "No. Harmony."
Phone: "Did you say... Har-mo-ny?"
Me: "Yes."
Phone: "Call mobile?"
Me: "YES."
Phone: "Operation timed out. Call mobile?"
Me: "FOR GOD SAKES PLEASE YES!"
Phone: "Calling...." (Actually it wouldn't, of course- it would just ignore you if you didn't say "yes" perfectly enunciated.)

My old phone: push one button. Say a name, and it always worked the first time. Then the phone dials. Sure, I had to record the voice dials, but it was SO MUCH FASTER. And it's a function I use constantly, and a huge ass problem in my opinion. It just ignores half of what you say and misinterprets the other half. I'd so much rather spend 15 minutes recording voice dials and then not struggle with each and every voice dial out- it's a "time saver" that isn't.

I also hate the themes, the menu is uglier by far than the old base model. Where'd the cute icons go? They also want you to buy ringtones, so you have about two options now, rather than a whole bunch of free ones. I just can't bring myself to buy new ringtones, when I had plenty for free on the old one.

Also the event thingy doesn't work- I like to remind myself to pay rent, and it only ever records the event as non-recurring even if you set it to recurring.

And my biggest gripe? When the phone is upside down, it's inaudible when it rings. I've missed about 3297975 calls since changing phones, since I never hear the frigging thing ringing. Even turning it all the way up results in a teeny little whisper if it's upside down. Yet, if I get a text message? It sounds like a bomb going off.

To be fair, there is one really excellent thing about this phone. The reception is absolutely AMAZING. Even in the rural black hole of reception I work in, the phone shows only one bar, but it's perfectly functional with that single bar- no static, no dropping of calls, no cutting in and out- perfect reception. Wow. It doesn't make up for every other thing I hate, but it's a huge plus actually. Way better than the old LG I used.

Three major flaws with this phone

Reviewer: romeoguy on Fri Apr 28, 2006

At first, the phone works like a dream. But the more you use it, the more you realize its limitations, and serious drawbacks. I am now very eager to replace this phone due to the following serious limitations:

- The camera function is extremely poor. When used indoors, the camera is practically useless, taking dark and unuseable pictures. When used outdoors (or indoors with flood lighting) the user has to be extremely careful not to shake the phone even the slightest bit. The fuzzy pictures that follow will cause your blood pressure to rise.

- The calender reminder function does not work as promised. If you set up reminders in the calendar for a recurring event, the reminder (ring or vibrate at the specified time) only works the first time the event occurs. Every recurring event fails to show up on the calendar. And hence, you get no reminder. So, for that weekly meeting, you have to manually schedule it in the calendar for each week. The recurring function is useless.

- MOST IMPORTANTLY: The silent (or "sounds off") function is unreliable. A glitch in the software makes it possible for the phone to start ringing even if set in silent mode. This does not happen at every incoming phone call, but rather randomly. This is extremely annoying. I am unable to rely on the behavior of this phone on silent.

Think twice before purchasing this phone. If none of the above three concern you, then go right ahead. Apart from these complaints, the phone works fine.

Poor sound quality and user interface

Reviewer: aregdude on Wed Mar 15, 2006

Have had this phone since December, '05.

Reasonable reception, I get only an occasional drop. Good battery life. That's where the good news ends.

First and foremost, what else is a phone for, but talking. The sound quality from the phone itself is mediocre at best. I have a fairly long commute, so I use a wired headset. I've tried three different headsets and the result is the same, even with the volume turned all the way up, I can barely hear the people I'm talking to. Would love to try Bluetooth, but the phone doesn't support it. I used two of the headsets on my last phone, a Motorola i730, and I actually had to turn the volume down.

Other drawbacks:
- user interface is clunky; mute button turns into "save" button if you press any other keys after call has started - never seen this before
- no configurable softkeys, you use their interface, period
- three key strokes needed just to dial voice mail
- call waiting - after you end the second call, there is no way to immediatley switch back to the original call; you wait 10 seconds for the phone to ring and put you back into the first call
- LCD is unintelligible in direct sunlight
- picture quality from the camera is very poor
- as reported in other reviews Verizon's "Get it now" is nothing more than a grab for your cash... 2.99 and up for a single ring tone

Too late for me, my 15 days to return the phone were up many weeks ago, but you can still avoid a mistake.

It's getting worse and worse

Reviewer: scottigee on Thu Nov 17, 2005

I've had the phone for about 6 weeks now and it's been relatively trouble free except for two very frustrating instances:
The first was on the first night I got the phone; it froze up. I brought it to the Verizon store and they couldn't fix it so they gave me a new phone.
That made me nervous but it was fine for the next 6 weeks until yesterday. Suddenly I was unable to hear people and they couldnt' hear me. Turns out if you use the headset the jack is a piece of junk and falls apart. My phone now thinks the headset is permanently in so it disables the microphone and earpiece...yet the headset won't make a connection so my phone is now officially useless.
The guys at the store just told me to jiggle the plug...wrong. It's completely busted now.
Not too happy

Horrible Phone.

Reviewer: oxpaperxbagxo on Fri Jun 02, 2006

I renewed my plan with Verizon back in August... I've been through three of these phones since then.

A friend of mine tried to send a picture and my entire phone froze. It turned off and would get so far as the Verizon Wireless screen and stop there, causing itself to overheat. I brought it to the store and they gave me a new one as they were unable to fix it.

So things were going fine, no problems until back in January my phone started sending me "inbox full" messages... funny thing, though... my inbox and outboxes were always empty when i received these. and i also could not receive or send text messages. this would occur for 2 weeks or so and then my phone would straighten out. The process would repeat itself every so often, however. So in March I brought it in and they gave me a new phone.

Now, I'm on my third phone and the part of the phone where you plug the charger into just fell out and my phone had been randomly turning off while charging. Tonight it turned off and will not turn back on. I placed a different battery in it (my sister has the same phone) and it still wouldn't turn back on. Unfortunately, I think this is the end of this phone as well and when I go back in to good old Verizon, I'm seeing about changing my phone.

Word to the wise: Think VERY carefully before getting this phone.

There are also other things that went wrong, but minor problems in comparison. I, too, have the ringer issue. My alarms have always worked perfectly, though.

My Opinion

Reviewer: Stormalert on Fri Jul 28, 2006

Besides Verizon being the greedy money sucking company they are and limiting everything on the phones, the LG VX5200 is not too bad...

Here are pros and cons....

.:Pros:.
Speaker and Volume is pretty loud

You can set pictures as Picture IDs

When you set up a contact, you can have their Home and Cell in one listing.

Service with Verizon is pretty good but could be better.
____________________________________________________

.:Cons:.
Most of these cons are because of Verizon, not LG..

Selection of ringtones are junk to make you pay Verizon for some other junk ones..

You cannot save any sound as a ringtone unless you buy it from them (Stop sucking money Verizon!)

Verizon interface is terrible and they take out all the features that the phones come with so you have to buy them from Verizon..

CPU is slowwwww as heck..

When the phone rings, its loud until you open it then it gets quiet and makes it seem like the call has been automatically answered.

When you press the button to answer a call, it takes about 2 seconds to "register" that you pressed a button...this gets annoying..
______________________

Overall I give this phone a B-. If Verizon didn't limit so many things I would give it a solid A. Make sure you get a cover for it, as it scratches easily.
Verizon will NOT be seeing my business anymore until they resolve their sucky limitations. I will be switching to Cingular when my contract is up. I'm tired of Verizon's Money-Sucking Schemes.

My first phone

Reviewer: yhouck87 on Sun Sep 25, 2005

Well I've waited a long time to get a contracted phone. The phone that I had before was a pre-paid Vox phone from virgin mobile, they were getting too expensive. the LG VX 5200 has great sound, it is hard to find things on the phone when you first have it for the first couple days. What I find to be a pain in the butt is the beeping noise when the phone is on speaker phone, and the other thing is, if you want to hear the voice commands really good you have to put the phone on speaker. With my mothers LG VX4500 you didnt have to do that. icon_confused.gif And other feature that it doesnt have like my mothers LG VX4500 that I really like is it says the name of the person that is calling.. I would really like to have that.. icon_neutral.gif I guess I could live without. Another feature that bugs me is that there are only 15 ringtones, and the sounds which on the LG VX4500 you could put as your ringtone.. you cant on the LG VX5200. but other than that, I like the camera, I love the phone.
There are only 2 main colors that you can have on your phone or themes.. Red & Blue. Seeing as my mother has the LG VX4500, you could change the themes to Red, Blue, Purple, green, and olive.. I think. icon_blink.gif
Which really blows my mind why they would only have 2 main colors but, 4 display themes... Default, Business, Tropical, and Blue... the first 3 are Red, and the Blue is ah DUH Blue... icon_mad.gif
I like my LG VX5200.... it really works great for the High School Senior! I really hope that I helped anybody out!!!

Repeated problem with LG 5200

Reviewer: jhschulte on Wed Dec 27, 2006

This is the third LG 5200 I have had to replace in the last seven months. The first one would not fully awake resulting in the loss of all my contacts; the second just died; the third replacement from Asurion Ins. ten days ago has an inverted screen and keys that stick and the phone freezes. Asurion has to "investigate" before they will replace because the insurance will only replace two a year. Verizon referes me to Asurion. I would not wish this phone on anyone.

Problems with the Screens

Reviewer: zachsocrazy on Thu Dec 29, 2005

Hey there, I am a college freshman and I opened my new LG VX5200 for Christmas from my parents. Finally got rid of the old brick I used to carry around. Anyway, I have had it for about 4 days now, and I am having problems with my screen. After I have let the phone sit around for a couple of minutes, the entire phone goes blank (to save the battery; no big deal). But whenever I open the phone up, the keys light up but the screens do not. Very frustrating sometimes. I also do not like that the phone does not come standard with any games to play; they must be downloaded for a fee. Tsk, tsk, LG. Not cool. Not cool at all. icon_mad.gif

Not the best phone in the world.

Reviewer: smehring on Wed Jul 12, 2006

This phone is an ok phone. There are a lot of things LG could have done better. I've had this phone for almost a year and i'm already sick of it. If you're a person who wants a cool phone. This isn't the one for you. It doesn't have many cool features. The inside screen has bad colors and the camera quality is horiable. But, this is a good phone if your phone breaks and your waiting to get another.

Pros-
-Nice bright front screen- little small though
-Camera
-Speakerphone
-Easy Navigation in the inside
-Good Battery Life

Cons-
-Camera quality is very poor.
-Can't record songs and put them as ring tones.
-Pre-installed ring tones are so "old fashioned"
-Internal screen has very poor quality.
-Phone tends to get hot when I am on the phone with someone, even after a few seconds
-The phone didn't notify me when I had a voicemail. I had to find a way to make it so it did.
-The game I downloaded from "Get It Now" got deleted out of no where.
-When you try to set a picture as your front wallpaper it get cropped and it've very small (except pre-installed images).
-The Flash is terrible in the dark, the picture shows up green or there is no picture at all.

Conclusion-
Overall this phone isn't that good, but it will get you by if you need one for a short time. The Inside screen quality is terrible. Camera quality is terrible.

LG vx5200 is HORRIBLE

Reviewer: werdboy on Fri Jun 23, 2006

I have had this phone for six months now, and it has been nothing but trouble. It is bulky and heavy to start with, but that is just the beginning. The reception is terrible, it makes a random high-pitched ringing sound in the earpiece, it is hard to hear callers, it freezes up so you have to take out the battery and start over, the picture quality is awful, the battery life is super short, even when not using it, and the large stub antenna is cheap looking and gets caught on everything! Need I say more?!

It's Okay.

Reviewer: zzaacchh99 on Wed Aug 30, 2006

My mother bought this phone for my brother on his 9th birthday. Suprisingly I ended up liking his phone better than mine. The vx5200 has a front color screen, my vx6100 doesn't icon_sad.gif! My brothers phone has a great signal at all times and call quality is great.

The ONLY 2 things that I liked better about my vx6100 Was that I had more colors to choose from for themes, instead of just Red, or blue. <---YUCK! and The camera on the vx5200 isn't that great at all, but hey, it does what it's surpose to!

And I think its a pretty good phone.

My Rating: icon_smile.gif
Call Quality: icon_smile.gif
Physical Appearance: icon_neutral.gif
Size: icon_blink.gif

Overall it's a good phone with good features, mine was my dads for two years, and he's a truck driver, with the "New Every Two" from Verizon, he was able to pass his phone down to me, and I plan on getting a MOTOKRZR when my "NE2" runs out. I'm on Verizon's "FamilyShare" plan, where I get 200 personal anytime minutes, free IN Calling, and 700 Shared minutes, and my mom gets free TXT messaging.

but yeah.it's too bulky.

Pros: Good features, excellent call quality, never drops calls,
Cons: Average camera, average appearance, bulky

Wow, this phone apparently is uber-popular.

VX5200 has many cons, few pros

Ok, so I got this phone as my first phone back in June 2006. I had that phone for less than a month when randomly the inside screen turned all blue and yellow. Of course, Verizon blamed it on me, even though I had NOTHING to do with it, and they made me but a new one from Asurion for $50. Ok, so I had that phone for probably 8 months, working okay with the exception of dropped calls quite often, but then in February of this year (2007), I started to notice a slight crack above the OK and arrow keys going up to the hinge. I ignored it for a while, but then the crack continually got bigger with time. Its not like I'm rough on this phone, it just kept cracking every time i opened it until one day (the crack on the plastic had made it alll the way up to the bottom of the screen) the plastic covering the right half of the hinge just popped out. So now, i have a very floppy phone that drops calls and closes on my all the time. MORE ISSUES: aside from the obvious complaints about the lack of themes, ringtones, etc on this phone, it also freezes up every time i try to get a picture message. I can send them, but when I try to recieve them, it locks up and the only way to fix it is to take out the battery. Even when i turn it back on, I have to delete the unopened picture message or else it will freeze again. AND.most recently, the little bracket inside the charging slot has fallen out so now I have to go get a new phone, full retail price of course, because this one won't charge. I could just get another one of these from Asurion for $50, but I'm afraid something else would go wrong with it, so I have the feeling that it would be more worth it to just pay 3 times that for a newer phone. This phone really is junky.
