I850 Great, then bad.
Reviewer: bindokam on Thu May 03, 2007
When I got my 850 I was very happy with the overall performance. Had to buy an extended life battery as the one it came with just didn't put out long enough, but that was a minor issue. I was consistently able to receive a signal where my brother with a similar phone could not, so I could brag. It didn't have any dropped calls at all.
His phone (a previous model, I'm not sure which) developed issues and now mine seems to have contracted the same "disease", as it were. He purchased a new one to replace it (the sturdier version of the 850, since he drops things a lot). Both have been working fine for some time now.
Overnight, the volume buttons on my phone ceased to function. Simultaneously, the thing will not get even a fraction of the signal it used to. At home, I could get full strength, now if I hold it up in the window at just the right angle it will get 3 bars, and tilting as much as 5 degrees can result in a "no service" message. I figured for as expensive as it was, it should last a little longer than it did. This phone wasn't able to make it through the length of the contract, and the issues it had impaired primary function, so I give it a poor rating. 3/10

Motorola i850

I have had several different Nextel phones during the several years I have had their service. Mostly, they have been improvements in quality for both mine and my wife's phone. Since the i730s were getting a little beat up and the battery life was fading, I bought us two new i850s last Christmas. At first they performed well except the battery life was much shorter than the old phones. A few months ago, mine started shutting down. I assumed it was the battery or I had accidently bumped the off button, but it got worse and last month, the screen went white. My repair store told me it was a bad flip and there were none available. I went over a week with only the ability to dial out or answer a ring. (no directory nor caller id, nor camera) after almost two weeks, I contacted a service store in another town about an hour away. He had one but found that I need a new phone which he replaced. He also checke the battery and replaced it. Great! Wonderful service!! On my way home, I tried to call my wife and the phone was dead, so I re-booted it and called. In the middle of my call it died again. After I got home, I called the service center back and he told me he would order me another new phone and call me when it came in. I am using a loaner (i730)which is doing great. Now, my wife's phone is shutting down and sometimes just refused to reboot. I have cleand the battery terminals and connetors on the phone and that does nothing to help. I called te store again and explained my problem and he told me he would order a new phone for my wife also. That has been almost two weeks now. I firmly believe this is a very poor design because I have been reading other reviews with the same problems and now, lightning has struck me three times with the same model. What to do???? I am going to try for a different product!!!! any suggestions????( I am stuck with Nextel in my area because they give the best coverage and I have another year on my contract.)

Never Again
Reviewer: jdelaney7022 on Mon Jun 18, 2007
My bf bought me my i850 after adding me to his plan with nextel. the phone worked great for about 3 or 4 months. Then while having it charge in the car, it would just shut off. It happened about 3 times. Thinking it was happening b/c it was plugged into my car charger, I didn't talk with it plugged in. But it happened anyway. then a few weeks passed with no problems. All of a sudden my phone just off on me and when turning it back on, I couldn't get past the welcome screen. Completely frozen, could not eve turn it off. I had to take the battery out in order to shut it off so I didn't kill the battery.
I also noticed that the battery life was VERY short compared to any phone I have ever had.
I would not suggest this phone for anyone. It's been a nightmare, and after being on the phone with Mortorola for a WEEK they are finally sending me a better phone. They CLEARLY know that the phone's a problem.

Long time Motorola/Nextel user, love the i850
Reviewer: fecina on Tue Aug 16, 2005
I've used Motorola's flip phones since the i90 a couple years ago, which I loved. I ended up losing my i90 and purchasing an i730, which I had to return several times because of dropped calls and overall low connectivity. It was clear that even though this phone superceded the i90, something with the network strength had been changed because places in which I received full signal and absolutely NO dropped calls with my i90 I experienced major problems with all of the i730s I had.
I went through just about every revision of the i730 (A, E, T, etc.) coupled with consistently upgraded software packages from Motorola and Nextel without change. It was only after several returns of the phone that I was told about the new FCC regulation that required a GPS receiver on all phones for emergency phone calls. Unfortunately Motorola had to modify and remove some of the signal hardware to make room for the GPS receiver, and I believe this is the cause of most signal degredation issues with all versions of the i730 and other phones released by Motorola and other vendors shortly after the regulation took effect.
All the trouble eventually pushed me to purchase an i850, which of course I was initially leary about considering it too abides by the FCC GPS rules and in addition includes a camera. However, my worries are unfounded with the i850 thus far; I've had nothing but excellent signal strength (very similar to my old i90) and zero dropped calls. I can't say enough about all the features (camera, themes, off-network walkie-talkie, large display (relatively speaking), and of course Nextel's general features such as DirectConnect(tm) and elegant design).
I highly recommend this phone to anyone looking for a lot of functionality in an IDEN phone with great practicality as well.
My rating is a 9/10. My i90 would be a 10/10, while the 730 would take a backseat (in fact the trunk) to all with a 2/10.

Hate the I850
Reviewer: my3jkj on Sat Jun 17, 2006
I purhcased a new Motorola I850 for Nextel on 10/31/05, I loved it until it broke ( the display had electronic problems, so I was told) Motorola sent me a new one, (it broke on 4/16/06). Then it happened again, about a month later. So that I wouldnt have to be without a phone while Motorola checked it out, I paid the 100.00 deductible and had it replaced through my Signal insurance. it happened again.about a month later..........I know someone else that is on their 3rd one in 4 months...................Everytime this happens, I lose all my pics, downloads, memos, etc..................

Motorola I850 w/ Nextel
Reviewer: rkemnitz79 on Wed Dec 21, 2005
I could not be happier with the new phone I got. I had the I530 (construction phone) and decided I needed an upgrade. The I530 was great, but just too bulky for my liking. As for the I850-The menu is very easy to navigate (if you have been a Nextel user) and ring/DC is very loud. My reception is good but I do get some dropped calls...living in rural Colorado will do that I would DEFINITELY recommend this phone. The battery life is NORMAL. People say "oh the battery life is horrible" but isn't it on every phone? We all want to talk for 2 hours on a phone...but cell phones just don't do it. Good luck!
