This phone is quite simply... AMAZING. I had a Sony T61x series which I thought was wonderful. But I love flip phones... just something about their style, functionality, etc. that is more appealing to me. As such, I tried this new generation of smartphones, and it is quite good. The reception is probably the best part... in my house, I have very weak reception with the T61x, but with the MPx220, I have reception all over the house. Where I frequently travel, I can tell you exactly where there are dead zones and calls will drop... however, with this phone, the call dropping frequency fell DRASTICALLY... I could carry on conversations even with 1 bar on the signal strength. The synchronization with Outlook is heavensent and works flawlessly when you know how to install the drivers properly... syncs with the supplied data cable or with Bluetooth!!! Has IR, Bluetooth, and data cable so you can transfer data with a number of ways. Comes with expansion slot for more memory storage. Windows Smartphone OS 2003 is a great app and works quite well. The speed of menu browsing, phone book scrolling, etc. is WAY beyond other phones with the awesome processor this phone houses. MP3 and MIDI ringtone support, picture ID on external screen, and GREAT RECEPTION!!! Battery life is quite good for a phone with so much functionality. It is made out of plastic like other regular phones, not like the V3 that is housed with an aluminum body... so it is susceptible to scratches. Speakerphone is quite loud, as is the ringer and the earpiece. I got mine from BestBuy, and the box had an orange sticker... meaning it was a revision of an earlier model that did not have a loud volume. Get the revised version and you'll be happy with this smartphone.

I read the reviews before buying the phone, and I was very happy with it till one day it just shut itself off in 30 seconds every time I switched it on. I was in the 6th month of the using the phone, and this was way too much to handle, knowing that Lockline Insurance (The insurance company that provides insurance with Cingular phones) does NOT cover insurance for this model, and that motorola service is equally expensive. I paid $300 for the phone that lasted 6 months, and boy, am I angry about it...
Anyways, here is how the phone performed while it WAS performing: The cellphone needed to be restarted once in a while, about once a month or so, because its Operating System (Microsoft Windows Mobile) used to 'hang'. Apart from that, the cellphone volume was too low, and it would be often difficult to hear the other person, AND to realize that the phone is ringing as its highest ringer volume is also too low on a road or a noisy classroom.
Other features like mp3 player, ability to read word, ppts documents performed well, and there was no problem with that. The only problem I ever had with the cellphone was to get it to behave like one.
I would caution you if you were planning on buying this one from Motorola.

Some key things I like are the great software you can install like Microsoft Pocket Streets for mapping, PocketTv to watch movies for novelty, and Agile Messenger that connects you to AIM, Yahoo IM, ICQ, and MSN Messenger. You can stream movies with Media Player and data service.
The speakerphone in my opinion is disappointing after several great Nextel/Motorola iDen phones. However I did get the Motorola bluetooth speakerphone and it's great. You can pair the phone with both bluetooth headset and speakerphone but only turn on the one you want to use.
The reason I purchased the phone was to use it as a bluetooth dial up modem for Cingular GPRS unlimited data service with my VGA iPaq. With the SE_VGA display tweak app and the landscape mode selected, web browsing on the iPaq is impressive. Many websites you view no longer have left/right scrolling because it all fits in. One difficult task was figuring out how to connect the Pocket PC to the bluetooth modem.
For my next work phone (Nextel) I've been hoping for at least bluetooth but it appears the Nextel will be the old MS Smartphone version w/o bluetooth.

Okay, it has the looks. It's built like a tank with a great hinge.
Nice displays. Good signal. almost always get 5 bars. I used it with T-Mobile and Cingular. Yes I had it unlocked, damn it was listed as being a world phone, unless you are in the USA! Wake up we are not the whole world.
I have taken it internationally. Hooked it up to Cable and Wireless and Digicel in the Caribbean. It worked no problems mon.
The first problem is make sure you get the latest ROM version. 1.43.
Any version lower and it is a very buggy phone. Earlier models had to be returned en mass because you could not hear anyone.
Now even with the ROM update if you use a wireless headset it gets stuck in the headset mode. Not sure if it was the wired headset that caused the problem or the blue tooth. In the meantime I am having to send it back to MOT again! First time was to have it flashed.
The speakers in the phone really are not that loud and they vibrate like they are blown.
Why the hell do I put up with this phone? I like the way it looks, its really a hot little number. Hand feel is good and buttons are in the right place.
It should do voice recognition when closed, but you have to open it then hold the side button. Oh for a simple voice recognition phone.
Camera sucks, totally, but I bought a phone not a camera. But the camera could be better, excusse me, should be better.
Biggest selling feature to me! WM2003 syncs with Outlook. My phone is always on and tells me my appointments. I have over 500 contacts in the phone and hear it will hold about 5000.
Will MOT make a next version? MPx240? or something?
In short avoid this model unless you can test it. Get it unlocked so you can take it with you if you travel. When it works, its great except for the camera. Oh and turn on the Vibrator or you will never hear it ring, its really low volume.

Cingular pulled this off their shelfs in 2004. I wish I had known that then.
So far I am having to send this phone back to MOT again.
Please stop selling thiss phone.
It looks great, it has tons of features, but so many bugs I don't know where to start. Just google the phone and read on.
It's a shame, had MOT done this phone right it would have been the best on the market hands down. Size function but they just couldnt make it all rock n roll.
