Motorola RAZR2 V9m User Reviews

1. Posted by nissandave Sat Aug 09, 2008 8:41 am

First, let me explain my perspective of cellphone reviews. I have been with Verizon Wireless for several years now and buy/repair/sell cellphones on ebay. Consequently, I have hands-on experience with many different models of Verizon Wireless cellphones, including:
Motorola V710
Motorola E815
Motorola V3m
Samsung 650
Samsung 740
Samsung 850
Samsung 340
Samsung 870
LG VX8300
LG VX8600
LG VX8700
LG VX9900 (EnV)
Motorola Razr2 V9m
LG VX5300
LG VX8100
Samsung 950

First and foremost, the V9m has got to be the most beautiful and sexiest phone that Motorola has ever came out with! Looks of this phone earn it 11 stars out of 10! The keypad is layed out very ergonomically. It seems to friendly for both small and big fingered people. The feel of the phone is great too. The only downside to the visual appearance of this phone is related the VZW software that this phone runs on; VZW downgraded the resolution of the screens on this phone for some reason. Why did you do this VZW? Seems to be a consistent issue with high-end phones that VZW sells. It's like they love to "toy" with it's customers.

Next, we review the reception of this phone. By far, the best all-digital reception phone that VZW has ever sold is the Motorola E815. The Motorola E815 cannot be beat reception wise. In fact the reason I ponied up the funds to buy this V9m is that I was hoping that this phone would follow in the E815's footsteps reception-wise. Unfortunately, I was dissappointed. To be honest and fair, the V9m does get good reception comparitively speaking. But in regards to the E815, it is just another best reception wannabe. It probably is related to the fact that the V9m's are running VZW's software on them. I would bet that if VZW would allow Moto software on the V9m's, the recption would be much better. I guess we will never know.

Function-wise, this phone is great. It has all the major, needed function features. The extrenal screen makes it functional, in that it is not too small to see call info on the extrenal screen when you receive a call. Many phones external screens are too small that if you are driving and have a call come in, it is pointless to try to read the small external screen to see who is calling, because if you do, you will find yourself driving into a ditch. No such problem with this phone's huge external screen. Texting on this phone can be and will be problematic. The phone's VZW software boggs down the speed of this phone. If you can type at a fairly speedy rate, the phone cannot keep up with your typing and it will miss characters at random within your text message. It seems that the #2 key is the worst to have missing text from. If you do hardly any texting with this phone, you will be frustrated and disappointed with this phone's texting ability (or should I say disability). Speakerphone of this phone is great. The ability to take self portraits with the V9m and the touch buttons on the external screen do considerable good to make the V9m better. The 2MP camera on this phone takes good pics, but not great. I'd say that the pics are just bit over average for a 2MP camera-phone. The mobile web on this phone is medicore at best for this phone. The webpages show up in a mostly cropped, visually unfriendly way. I like to do a lot of email checking and mobile banking on my cellphone. While this phone is capable of all that, it would be mush better if you could change the mobile web display to a landscape mode, so it could take advantage of the wider view of the webpages. But, it doesn't.

Battery life is completely dismal! I sprung for an extended battery and was very pleased. If you use this phone a lot each day and/or you drive and/or stay in an Extended Service area with this phone, you will not get by more than 1.5 to 2 days at most on the standard battery. The size of this phone feels good in your hands and on your side in a phone case. You can flip this phone open with one hand and safely dial 9-1-1 while driving (which I do not recommend or advocate). The width compliments this phone, in that it prevents people with average size hands from being able to wrap their hands around the phone when it is open. This allows you dial more comfortably, in that your fingers are not hanging off the edge of the phone. Instead, your thumb is resting comfortably at the #5 key in the middle of the phone. Trying to use this phone on your shoulder is pointless though. There is nothing there to hold, as this phone is very thin. But then again, this is why we have bluetooth headsets now.

Summary, I bought this phone and used it for 2 months before selling it. If all I used this phone for was for voice calling, then I probably would have kept this phone. But, all in all, I needed the mobile web and texting functions of this phone to be better. I had a LG VX-9900 before this phone and was very well pleased with it. So I decided to go back to a LG VX-9900. Maybe if Motorola resurects the E815, then I will give it a shot. But make no mistake about it, the V9m is no E815!

I got this phone with my "new every two" plan, so I paid next to nothing for it. The best thing about the phone is the large external and internal screen. I like how I don't have to squint when reading the time or if I missed a call or have a voicmail message. The screen is large enough for me to read the entire text of a text msg without having to scroll down. I love the fact that the external screen turns into a touch pad for using the camera, music player, and voice commands. For instance, you can touch the larger button on the left side and on the external screen appears the camera, music, and voice command button. Touch the voice command button, say "go to" and a list of options will come up, then say "messaging" and it will say "open phone," you open the phone and you're at the text messaging menu! The best next step would be for the phone to type out the message as you talk, but I guess that will take another two years to develop. But, you can lock the phone from the outside to prevent the external controls from being accidentally activated.

Cons:

1. The flimsy little latch on the left side of the phone where the charger plugs into. What a piece of crap! It's difficult to open--God forbid you have large fingers you'll be trying for days to get it open. I dread charging my phone because I have to find some clever way to open it without ripping it off. I literally want to rip it off. It's useless. I know they want to make the phone look sleeker, but putting that little cover over the charger slot is just plain stupid.

2. You can't flip the phone open with one hand

3. You cannot, much to my dismay, control the volume of the phone from using an outside control. You must open the phone, using both hands, and press the left larger button to control the volume.

4. It gets greasy and smeary just like any other phone, which is a shame because, as the title says, it's pretty. I hate for my pretty phone to look greasy and it's not easy to wipe off the fingerprints or grease from your face or hair.

5. It comes in only one color, for now. Not that it's an ugly color, it's kind of like a dark maroon or black. But, I'm sure in December I'll see a commercial for a pink one or a gold one.

Pros
1. The look--people will flock to you because of your sleek looking phone(which is good if you're looking to make new friends; just show them your phone, they will think you're rich and want to hang out with you. JK!)
2. You can record your own voice and use it as your ringtone!
3. The external and internal display are large and lovely
4. I like the RAZR touchpad
5. Internal atenna
6. External touch screen for voice commands, camera, and music (the first I've ever seen in a phone).
7. Clarity of the calls--I can hear people as if they were standing right next to me.
8. Loud ringer--if I put the volume on High or even Medium High, I always hear my phone ringing, even if it's buried at the bottom of my purse.

Motorola phones are always kind to me. I've had Nokia and Samsung, but I like Motorolas the best and VW has really upgraded me with this one!

Pros:
- big external screen
- touch sensitive screen
- very thin
- 2mp camera
- no red bars
- voice command

Cons:
- no flash for camera
- only one UI (Black VZW theme)
- dies quickly when listening to music
- no ability to text on external display. text messaging is replaced by voice command, which i think is useless because you can still use the right-side button to activate the voice command with the phone closed.

After waiting such a long time I went to the Verizon store to pick the newly released razr 2 v9m. I decided to play with the demo for a while before I got it. The phone was nice but was no where near what I expected. You flip open and notice the keypad. It is the exact same as the LG 8600 which I was not a big fan of at all. I know this was not getting the standard razr keypad but I was hoping for some grip on it or something. The next thing I notice is the large nice inside screen. The menu is also very very similar to the LG's. After playing with the phone though I noticed my biggest issue and I know this is not a fault and this is supposed to be the razr thin phone but combined with the shiny plastic its made of it is nearly impossible to open this phone with one hand. I actually ended up picking up the razr maxx ve which is not as cool but had more of what I wanted and I saved some money. All in all the new razr is very fancy and has tons of cool options. But it is an LG. Especially for verizon who uses a universal menu if it said LG on the phone I would not have noticed. This is a cool phone but no where near what it was like when the original razr came out. icon_frown.gif
