ROKR works for me.

Reviewer: Maui Cat on Thu Oct 27, 2005

I have been reading all the complaints about the ROKR, not being a great product. It's price is the same as an iPod and you can't store more than 100 songs. It's said to have a sub-par camera. Some people complain of connectivity problems with iTunes.
I haven't had any problems with mine. I took it out of the box and linked right up with iTunes. I knew when I bought it, it only held 100 songs. No surprise there. I'd like someone to try and call me on their shuffle or iPod. The only thing I miss is voice dial. It's funny you can record a voice tag for your phone contacts, but no way to make the call. The battery has been fine. I used it on a 5 hour flight to Hawaii and still had juice when I landed to make a call.
One more problem, as of Sept.20th Motorola Phone Tools doesn't support the ROKR. Motorola said they expect to update soon. We'll see.
If anybody else has a ROKR please post on how you like it. I haven't seen much on it.
Thank you

AWESOME PHONE

Reviewer: rln84 on Fri Dec 09, 2005

I read that review by that person which appears right in the features page of ROKR... i got kind of confused by that person's review as his was one of the very few that were staunchly against rokr...

I COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH EVERY POINT HE MADE. NO OFFENCE.. BUT IT IS A FACT!

I got my rokr a couple of days back...
U get 512MB flash card with the phone to store upto 100 songs
u get the data cable to transfer anything u want to from the comp
u get a specific headphones for this rokr
u also get an adapter such that u can use any headphone with this cell... so, it makes it all the more flexible.. if u had a noise cancelling headphone, u can go ahead and use it with this phone... TELL ME ONE PHONE MAKER WHO WOULD GIVE U THIS OPTION/FLEXIBILITY!! Every maker would prefer the users to stick to their "genuine" parts and fleece us of good $$...

There is no problem with the headphone that comes with the mobile.. it works GREAT.. the speakers ROCK! i couldnt believe that this small phone could fill the entire room with crystal clear output...
I have never used itunes before.. so, i cant compare this with the typical ipod or whatever...
moreover, at mobiledia, i got a bluetooth headset for FREE! The shipping was very very prompt.. thru fedex.. very reliable..
The interfaces are as good as any previous motorola phone..

100 songs are a lot to hear at one go !! come on!! i dont know many ppl who would listen to thousands of songs in a go! So, this 100 song limitation is there just cos we think it is there... it is no big deal! delete some songs and put some new ones!!! why make such a big fuss out of this!

About all those flashy lights... if u dont like it, u can switch it off!!!! some ppl said that it would look inappropriate for a grown up! then GROW UP AND SWITCH THE RHYTHM LIGHTS OFF!!

Yet to verify the battery life.. but have read a lot of reviews that it works great...

Someone had said that the ear bud cover tore while putting it on the headphone... come on!! u should have given it to a 3 year old to tear it or u should have been suffering from some sort of neural instability!!

and most importantly, about the transfer speed.... although it is not usb 2.0... it is fast enough... U DONT HAVE TO WAIT OVERNIGHT TO GET 100 SONGS ON UR PHONE!!
MAYBE IT TAKES AN HOUR OR SO... BUT THATS FINE.. I dont think u would transfer more than 20 songs at a go... at most it takes 20 mins... so, it is fine i guess although usb 2.0 would have been great.... but i dont see this to be a big deal till now..

So, ppl... just go ahead... it looks brilliant.. its not a flip phone.. it gives amazing output wrt songs... and its reception is just as good as motorola is...

Signing off! icon_smile.gif

Phone Not As Bad As Described

Reviewer: Sunrise_P on Wed Feb 22, 2006

I agree and disagree with a lot of the comments on Moto's ROKR phone. Most people who are upset with it either:

a) didn't read up on what they were purchasing or
b) have had technical issues regarding their specific phone, but not the ROKR in general.

I've waited a couple weeks of having my ROKR phone before I would write this review (just to see what kind of problems I would run into) and so far, there hasn't been much to complain about. However, there are some problems worth addressing and i'll get to them right away.

First annoyance was the transfer rate of the USB cable, they certainly could have upgraded that aspect as they were fully aware a connection to the PC was mandatory (iTunes was the ticket to this phone). iTunes also tends to lag while songs are playing which is only annoying if browsing through your playlists. Thankfully, the music is priority and never once has the music lagged because of me browsing. The last gripe may only apply to those who previously owned a Motorola phone, as they changed the Green and Red phone icons around, yet oddly left the "back" and "select" options as they were before. Due to the amount of times I press the Red phone icon to exit back to the main screen, it certainly has taken a while to get used to.

As for the rest of the features, it's a solid phone. Granted, it's not introducing anything new from Motorola (which needs a completely different OS, in my humble opinion) but it gets the job done. This phone is ideal for people who can't afford both a great phone and an iPod, as it gets both jobs done. As long as you can get past the fact that there is a 100 song limit in iTunes (the rest can be stored as MP3's on ur mem-card if you still have space), then what you are getting here is exactly as advertised: a decent phone/iTunes player.

OVERALL RATING: 8.1 (out of 10)
The ROKR is a solid phone that incorportates iTunes very well with Motorola's slow OS. It's not perfect, but it does everything it's supposed to: play music like an iPod and give you the standard phone features you'd expect from a Motorola phone. If you're looking for a phone that includes up-to-date features, you might want to look elsewhere as it should be very clear the ROKR doesn't raise the bar in terms of technology.

I like my rockr phone

Reviewer: Jellybean313 on Sat Dec 24, 2005

Mine was a gift (I was given cash to buy a phone and this is what I chose so I know exactly what I paid for it!) I love it. My service is good (Cingular has not failed me yet...) My only issue is that I can not set it up to recieve email. I can send stuff from my phone to my computer email with no problem (as I can to any email or other cell phone) but I can not make it recieve from my computer via email. I can't seem to save my settings for email, everytime I try I type it all in and it will not save anything. Maybe I am just doing something stupid, I don't know! And even though I didn't purchase this for myself, as someone who does not have an IPod yet and doesn't have a bunch of money to blow on gadgets, I like it and I am happy to own it! Mine was not very expensive (and came with a case and car charger and I can even bring back my crappy generic case for a new one when there is one available for free and I get to replace my phone once a year for the same phone for free or with whatever is cooler for an upgrade fee) I have been able to talk to everyone all over the country without dropped calls, sometimes it can seem echoey if I am on speakerphone and the other party is in a far rural area like Middle of Nowhere, Ohio. I am a little bummed that I was not told before I bought it that I needed Windows 2000 or XP (again, I have no IPod so I am not familiar with ITunes! I still burn cds!) and I am lucky I was planning to buy a new computer anyway (my old baby only had Windows 98!) so I didn't have to wait long to use my ITunes feature!!
Overall I give it 2 thumbs up for user friendlieness and generic music abilities!

good phone, poor software.....

Reviewer: MEtaphysio on Sun Jun 18, 2006

When i first got this phone i thought it was brilliant, ive never been a fan of itunes and it annoys me like most apple software ones....The sound quality is perfect and i love the way the tiny speakers can pack a bit of a punch. I got album art working once, but then again the reason i cant get that working all the time is my inabilty to use iTunes. The internet connection settings were very complicated and i struggled to set that up properly. The screen scratches easily. Its also quite hard to raplce. also i cant take any calls if my phone is pluged in as this will cause the phone to completely lock, and can only be fixed by me replacing the battery. Same goes for when im playing music and take calls, the phone sometimes pauses my music and i can take the call, but other times it just locks. The software on this phone is pretty poor. But you get what you pay for.....

its great

Reviewer: rokrguy on Fri Jan 20, 2006

i like my rokr since i got around the 100 song limit its great you can read about that in moto talk forum its a little laggy on startup you have to hold the power for a while and it sucks that the memory card type they provide is a mini transflash and they dont make mini trans flash any higher than 512 it would be nice if thay made a one gig but other that its great the camera is aceptable the video portion of it is kinda pixely on play back and i dont like how u cant make the stored songs your ringtone the call clarity is good and it has a great speaker phone the stereo music playback is nice and the lights are cool to i also dont like how u have to save phone book entries to the phone in order to add a picture to it oh well they the good qualities make up for the bad i guess.

I'm with you.

Reviewer: Maui Cat on Fri Dec 09, 2005

I love my rokr. When I get home for a walk I can just pull the headset off and listen to my tunes on the speakers that sound great!
Every point you make I agree with. It even shows up on Motorola Phone tools now(you have to use the E-398 model number).
I've had this phone since it came out and I have no buyers remorse.

Motorola ROKR E1

Reviewer: mrbillyvee on Wed Dec 21, 2005

I just Bought My ROKR E1. This phone is far above anything else I saw. I had a v551 which is a tough act to follow and I was not disapointed.

Had NO probs downloading music onto the phone. I compress my MP3's so I fit close to 600 songs onto it.

The only complaint is just the typical dismal instructional manual that comes with the phone. My v551 had the same useless instruction manual, so I am not too bummed.

The price was UNBEATABLE. HIGHLY reccommend this phone !!!!!!

Easily the worst phone I've ever had...

Reviewer: sc123 on Tue Nov 01, 2005

Well I've been waiting until a device came around that would converge all of my needs: phone, calendar, contacts, music and games. Since I was ready to change wireless providers (Alltel over chargers and has a pitiful coverage area), it seemed like a good fit. Click "More..." for my review of the ROKR E1:

Ordering
The first step was calling Cingular and ordering the phone. This was easy enough, but BEWARE - you're going to need accessories! The phone doesn't come with a case of any type, so be prepared to buy that. You'll also need a car charger and probably another headset as the included headset is less than stylish and its thin wiry cable tangles too easily. Also be prepared to purchase an additional “Media Bundle” for Internet, IM, and other data access components. Strike one.

I ordered overnight shipping but didn’t receive the phone until the next week (a day late). The shipment did not include the leather case I purchased, although it was on the shipping bill. This was more of a downer than a setback as the phone fits nicely into most pockets.

Setup
After I had inserted my battery and charged my phone (for the specified eight hours – NOT!), I proceeded to try all of the whiz-bang features. The lame headset previously mentioned comes with cheap ear pads that tore when I tried to put them on the buds. Later I found out that the right ear bud didn’t even work. Strike two.

Initial setup was a snap and I was activated and using the ROKR in no time. The phone is light, solid, and fits nicely into my hand. It has a large, somewhat dim display that makes good use of its space. The keypad and function keys are laid out in a typical and therefore familiar manner. Nothing ground breaking in these areas.

Software
The iTunes software included on the phone is very basic. So basic in fact that it isn’t much more than a glorified play list. I would’ve expected greater and more “iPod” like functionality from a phone so highly touted by Steve Jobs. Regardless, the software synced without issue to my Windows XP Pro installation of iTunes 5.0 and I was easily able to add my music to the device. The ROCKR’s USB connection is *GASP* USB v1.1, a sin among sins. What the hell were they thinking? File transfers are unnecessarily slow due to this feature scrimp. USB 2.0 is a requirement for devices such as this, not an option. Strike three.

Typically three strikes warrant a beating with the steel toe of doom, but in this case the damned thing costs too much to destroy. I tried a few other features, such as adding an E-Mail account and using the three supported IM clients (AOL, Yahoo!, and ICQ). The IM functionality is easy enough to use with most of the necessary features for basic messaging, but the unit actually rebooted itself any time I sent more than a few messages – ESPECIALLY if I was also running the E-Mail client or iTunes. The ROKR just doesn’t seem to be able to handle multitasking. (Strike four.)

...More Problems
At one point I had to remove my battery to get the little bastard to restart. When the device booted I couldn’t run iTunes – it just hung on the iTunes logo. After a call to tech support I found that I had loosened the TransFlash card housed below the battery. Come to find out, so the technician told me, that is a very common issue. I’d give that a strike but since it’s more my fault than the phones I’ll let it go.

And then there are the most infamous sticking points. You can’t load more than 100 songs on the phone, even if you haven’t reached your 512 MB limit. Apple has no plans of changing this. There is no logic behind this, other than that of a company being greedy and dry humping their bottom line.

Another major issue is the unit’s Bluetooth support. I purchased the HS850 headset and was not able to pair the device until I reset the phone twice. Even when the headset worked it was far too quiet. An even larger issue is the fact that you cannot listen to music via the Bluetooth connection. That’s just retarded. (Strike five.)

Finally, you cannot wireless download songs from iTunes. Yes the phone has Internet connectivity, yes it supports software and other music downloads, but you cannot use what seems such an obvious solution with iTunes. Why not? Ask Motorola/Cingular/Apple. What do I say? Strike six.

Conclusion
Six strikes. The phone has struck out, twice. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that the phone does work most of the time. It does do what they advertise, if unreliably and not to its full potential. Call quality is good and the battery life is above average. The built in speaker phone is nice and the lighting effects are fun. In the end the ROKR is a phone in need of software updates, third party hacks and a development team with vision. Poor ROKR. Poor me.

ADDITION: Recently I've noticed a lot of "Call Failed" dropped calls from the phone with outgoing calls. Sometimes if you immediately hit Retry they will go through, but this is very frustrating.

REVIEW

Reviewer: arsalm on Mon Jan 16, 2006

I have bought ROKR E1 in Pakistan which is quite cheap (US$200) as compared to price in UK (₤198). I don’t know whether a cheaper version is being sold made in China or this is the same as in other parts of the world. No doubt phone is a good combination of all facilities but it can’t play full screen video like Nokia sets and streaming in Quiktime is not as good as that of Real Player. I-tunes are useless. Sound quality is good but volume is not to the level of D-500. Is there any possibility of putting Real Player and seeing full screen videos with updates of software from Motorola? I would recommend it to the ones who could not afford higher prices.

Motorola ROKR E1

Reviewer: erkbaseball on Fri Jan 20, 2006

The reviews on this page that are good are there because the owners havnt owned their ROKRs for long. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world even though the song transfers were slow, but now i absolutly hate and wish i could run over it with my car. i would, but it costs too much. I hate it because it is very, very slow, thats # 1, it freezes, then reboots itself any time a write a text message. I also cant download any more songs, the supper amazing "just drag and drop" method doesnt work. it gives me the little circle with the line through it thing. So if you are reading this, dont suffer like i have and for the love of God do not under any circumstances buy this peice of crap.

Motorola ROKR

Reviewer: SonejisAsylum on Sat Dec 31, 2005

This must be the worst phone i have ever had. I am at my wits end at the moment with this. So much so that i am highly contemplating throwing across the room. It has froze on me four times now and each time was when i was wanting to take a picture, or video of something and i had to stop and take the battery out. Last night i eventually managed to get itunes on my phone and surprise surprise, when i plugged it up this morning to add a few more, they have disappeared from my phone. I decided to take the battery out to see if when returning it, my itunes also returned and now the battery wont come out without a fight. sigh. I wish i still had my housebrick. icon_squint.gif

Nice Phone...But LOTS of problems!

Reviewer: mysabbie on Sat Feb 17, 2007

I got this phone as a gift in January 2006. I loved it when I first had it, even though it can only hold 100 songs. It was overall a nice phone. Then, a few months into my having it, it began to freeze. I had to take the battery out, put it back in and recharge it. This was a hassle. Then, there was the big freeze. I couldn't turn it on for at least a week. I finally got it to work. Then, one day, I turned it on and tried to get into my iTunes. IT DIDN'T WORK! icon_mad.gif I was so frustrated. I brought it into Cingular and they didn't help me much. They just told me to send it in and get a new phone which would probably cost me lots of $$$. My battery then died. I had to drive to some store far away from my house to get a new battery and it cost $50! But, this phone also has some good qualities. It has a nice camera and has internet access too. But, overall, I can't wait for my two-year contract to end so I can get a new phone.
