Motorola T730 User Reviews

After reading so many negative posts on this website and wondering whether people only bother to post when they're really pissed off, I thought I would share my own (good) experience with the T730. I've had the phone for about 8 months now and I love it. I rarely have problems with reception, and they've been getting fewer and farther between as Verizon slowly takes over the whole country. I never, ever have problems with sound quality--everyone sounds great. Some people have complained about the low volume, but I've found that has to do more with where you hold the phone to your ear than anything inherent in the phone itself. Very often I find myself turning the volume down. Messages and text messages always appear immediately. I do wish you could get rid of the big icons in the middle of the screen and turn off the on/off chiming sounds, as another posters have mentioned, and it does have a shorter battery life than my previous Nokia phone (although you can buy an extended battery for it, but I haven't done that)... but I haven't had any of the mechanical and technical problems that other readers have mentioned, and I've done things like drop the phone onto a concrete floor and leave it in a very hot car. It's held up really, really well. I've also found the menu and address book very clear and easy to use... the previous poster who complained about not being able to see multiple phone numbers for one entry obviously doesn't know how to scroll down and hit "More" in the entry display. There's also a date book function that works pretty well as an alarm clock. My brother also had a T730 for a year before I bought mine, and he also had a good experience; the only problem he ever had was a short battery life (which again, can be fixed by purchasing the extended battery). Another note about Verizon... I switched over to Verizon from Cingular. Cingular was by far the worst experience I have ever had with a company in my life. First, they tricked me into signing up by promising international roaming features that never actually did work. Whenever I would call their customer service line about it or any other problem with my bill, which was often, I was confronted with the most uninformed, incompetent customer service and technical support I have ever come across. Their training program couldn't be more than twenty minutes long. They know nothing. Once I asked a question to three people and got three different answers. I've never gotten as frustrated and angry with another human being as I have with the Cingular customer service people. Never, ever sign up with Cingular. Verizon, in contrast, has been easy to deal with. I've found them polite and helpful. And, I get answers to my questions that are actually correct. Absolutely worlds away from the buffoons at Cingular. So, in summary, I would recommend Verizon service, whatever phone you buy. I think the T730's been discontinued, but you if you can still get your hands on one, I'd highly recommend trying it out.

I wish I had known about these forums before I purchased the Motorola T730. This is not a cheap phone, I only had it for six months and it was nothing but trouble. There are so many reasons NOT to buy this phone, but here a few that stand out:

1) The user interface is not very intuitive. The screen colors are dull and the resolution is poor considering the price tag.

2) Battery life is ridiculously poor - even with only minimal settings, I had to charge this almost every day.

3) Volume is low. I had a lot of trouble hearing people on the other end and they had trouble hearing me. It was not the service provider because I've used other phones with the same provider and have never had this problem.

4) Structural integrity - the hinge is made of plastic and is NOT durable. I am really careful with all my phones and I never dropped this one, but after about three months the hinge just cracked, it was like the plastic just wore down or something. I've never seen anything like it. I was willing to pass it off as a fluke until I heard from another T730 user that the exact same thing had happened to his phone. The hinge cracked in exactly the same place too! It seems like a structural problem in the phone and just adds to my overall disappointment with this product.

5) Dropped calls, no notification of missed calls - This phone was always dropping calls. Worse, when I missed calls, the phone did not even indicate that a call had been missed in the display window!

Overall, just a terrible disappointment. I've used Motorola phones in the past and was always satisfied with their performance, but NOT the T730. This phone is awful, stay far, far, far away!

One would think that the most recent model released by motorola would improve upon the older model, however this is not the case with the T730. I will warn you that I am writing this review after spending 20 minutes on the phone (19 minutes on hold) with the motorola tech support. The battery life is poor, even when all settings are set to conserve battery life. Also, the phone has been programmed in such a way as to obnoxiously announce to the world that you are powering your phone on or off (even if your phone is in the silent mode). However, I just figured out a way around this--you have to shut your phone as soon as the intro/outtro screen pops up. My second complaint is that there is no way to turn off the scroll key shortcut menu, which takes up a majority of the screen. This renders it pointless to have a personalized background because you can't see it through the giant (and often unneccesary) shortcut menu. Also, this phone comes with no default games, nor the camera attachment. Although the sound quality of the phone is quite good, and the new flip phone "looks cool," I would strongly discourage any friend, relative, or stranger from purchasing this phone. A friend of mine has the T720, and that seems to be the better model.

I have had nothing but problems with this phone, I'm already on my third one. It seems like I am on a three month cycle for Verizon to give me a new one. The first phone had the screen go black, and then intermittently turn on and off. The phone would randomly power down too. Second phone, the voicemail indicator would not clear, and would say I had a voicemail no matter what. The event notifications on the second phone were whack too, they would randomly go off, and sometimes even days after the event was scheduled. The third phone (which I need to take back) will not let me know when someone leaves a voicemail, and the same thing is happening with the events. I had a Startac for almost 4 years and never had a problem with it (other than the stupid antenna breaking.) I'm pretty frustrated and probably will never get another motorola phone. The only positive so far is Verizon, which has replaced my phone each time, no questions asked.

I came across this board because I refused to buy another phone from Verizon. That's like renting phones for 3 months. I was lookign to buy another t730 somewhere cheap just to last thru my contract and came across this board. Between teh 3 phones in my family we have experience EVERY issue I've read here....multiple times on a couple of the phones. I also agree that Verizon is NOT customer friendly. I don't know who I resent more; Verizon or Motorola for putting out this phone.
Beings I'm not sure, I'm staying away from both of them from now on.
In fact, I told the Verizon rep that beings they want to be so independant I will be cancelling my cell phones, my verizon dsl and even change my verizon local service. That's the only way I can show my dissatisfaction.

Some people have been bashing this phone, but I honestly think it's pretty good. I had a T720 for a year until it finally stopped working. I got the the 730 under the original warranty. From what I understand the 730 is a 720 with a new plastic cover and a few hardware rewirings that fixed shorts with the battery. It runs the same firmware so the phones behave the same.

Overall this phone does everything that it claims. I mostly got this phone because you can change covers, it can do internet for a laptop (through a cord for $5 of ebay), and tons of info about messing with them is on the internet. I like to play icon_angel.gif . I like this phone because of the cover. The brushed aluminum looks very professional. I like the flip phone, and caller ID on the outside is a must. The phone gets good reception I think, but this is my only phone and Verizon is great where I live. It has a calendar that I sometimes use to remind me of things, but it is kind of hard to setup reminders. There isn't an alarm per se, but setting reminders is almost as good. Phone also has voicedial and every number gets a "speed" dial by pushing 1 and # jumps to your first number. Call clarity is good. It blocks out most background noises except for strong wind and super loud music.

My complaints with this phone are the speaker volume could be louder for times when there is strong wind or super loud music. I never thought I would use it but I wish this phone had speaker phone. The phone book is retarded in that it lists every number associated with the same name. You can turn that off with an option, but then you cannot access the other numbers. I also wish the ringer was about 100x louder for when there is strong wind or super loud music. Usually that later is what causes me to never hear the phone ring. The 730 lets you compose your own ring tones which is pretty cool. I am also cheap so I never really send text messages and would never pay to send pics to somebody but the few times I have sent or received text messages it's pretty easy with the typing recognition thats on this phone. Verizon has GIN (Get It Now) for downloading ringtones and games and the like which I hear from people that pay for that junk is pretty cool, but I prefer GAGIN (Get Around Get It Now); the games and ringtones definitely add to this phone.

Overall I am satisfied with this phone and wouldn't pay money to switch to a new one.

Ok here it is; I've seen everyone elses reviews on here about the t730 and it sounds a lot like what has been wrong with my phones! I went to Verizon Wireless in Feb. 2004 to get a phone. They advertised the Motorola T730 like it was the most excellent phone out there, hmm, I wish I knew what I was getting into then. Anyways, I bought the phone (which was $300 and some regularly) at the promotional price of $150.00 for signing a 2 year contract. Everything was fine at first, about a month later the phone started acting up, it would shut itself down, the screen would go blank, it would say no service go to a blank screen come back with no service before regaining it's bars. So not thinking much of it at first, I brought the phone to Verizon (where suprisingly at that store they have nasty, unhelpful workers). They switched it out for the same phone (Which at first I didn't know that all the phones they swap out to you are refurbished, found that out later after the 4th one I had to get). Had that one for about 2 months had the same problems again (What a coinsidence?). Went back and got a 3rd one. Had that one for a few months and had the same problems, went back and got the 4th one. Now this one is doing the same things but it completely died on me this time but before it did, this is what it was doing, I plugged it in and a couple hours later went to go use it for something and it said "unable to charge", my phone was still saying low battery when I thought it was charging all this time. So I unplugged it and plugged it back in. I made a phone call and it kept making the beeping noise and switching from charging to low battery. Also the person I was talking to said I sounded muffled (which I have had a problem with that also in the past phones I've had), and that person to me sounded scratchy at times (Also a problem before). So it was like that, until it finally cut out and went to a black screen even though the lights were still on on the keypad. So I tried to charge it, no such luck (Can I say I'm surprised?, NO!). It would sometimes come on the main screen with the blueish background with the Motorola "M" symbol on it like at startup then it would switch to the white screen at off position and say charging then about 5 seconds later it would go to a black flashing screen then off. It also did some of these patterns differently, but I couldn't get it to charge and I couldn't get it to turn on. I played with it for about a half hour this morning and then took a nap when I woke up I tried to see if I could get it to work again, no luck, NOW the stupid thing is working at all. All I can say to anyone buying this phone off ebay or anywhere else BEWARE DO NOT GET IT EVER! Verizon doesn't even carry this phone anymore. Plus word of advice, DON'T EVER GET VERIZON, THEY WILL NOT HELP UP AND TREAT YOU WITH RESPECT. Another note; one of the times I talked to Customer Care on the phone with Verizon, the worker even admitted they had a BIG ISSUE with this make and model. And Verizon is another story, RUDE and NOT HELPFUL is the gist of it. The only things they could suggest doing were sending me another T730 (which I am awaiting my precious 6th phone to come) or pay the 1 year contract promotional price and sign a 2 new year agreement, which I will not do. I shouldn't have to pay when it is their fault, they sold me something bad in the first place. Just like I explained to them they wouldn't like it if they went and bought a brand new TV for example and had problems with it from the get-go and had to go through 4 or 5 of them, they would want something different! I deserve to be treated with respect and complete customer care and satisfaction as a consumer. If I have a problem with this one (which I'm sure I will), I am cancelling my service with Verizon Wireless. -JL

I am on my 4th T730. I started with a T720 and I could not get range or dropped calls. Verizon changed me to T730. That did not work at all. So I got another t730. I couldn't get any ringing on this one. Then they switched it out to another t730 and I still have no range. I still drop calls and now my rings have stopped. But my Husband has T720. They swapped his to a t730 also. Took it back because the screen blanked out. They swapped it back to a T720. And neither of us get our text messages. We no longer get range where we use to. Voice mail and text messages come hours or days after they were left or sent. His screen keeps blacking out. And verizon says there is nothing they can do. We do not qualify to upgrade our phones. So either we deal with these they say or we can pay a Full price for a phone. My advice. don't get t730 or T720 or VERIZON.

The T730 is a disaster. After four of them I just gave up. The dataport, in particular, is a problem. But the connections within the flip phone hinge run a close second. Compounding the disaster is Verizon Wireless, which could not be a most rigid company to deal with. You would think with all of the hands-free laws that they would be able to check your built-in unit at any facility? Wrong! In order to prove to them that my handsfree system was o.k. and that it was the fourth phone gone bad, they suggested I drive 2 1/2 hours from my home to their center. Of course, I guess like the car business, all cell companies are pretty much the same. Lousy!

I feel like I know cell phones very well. I have had Nextel, AT & T, Quest and now Verizon. I have never in all my 9 years of cell phone use, ever been so frustrated and upset with a phone. We only have had these phones, t730 since July of 2004 and we have went through more batteies than I can count. Then when my husband went in for his last battery just a week ago. He came home to charge the phone and it wouldn't charge. The screen went black. We then put it in my phone and the same thing happen. We called Verizon to cancel, due to anyone that puts there name on such a frustrating phone must be a company that doesn't care what they put there name on, let alone what anger they cause there customers. They said they would replace our phones. We just got the replacement phones and they are the t720. Not the t730's we bought in July. Let alone the phones they sent us has no backs and no batteries. So now we have to go into town and get batteries. We knew we where going to be without a phone for 5 days so we went to Cingular and found there phones to be far better. I have not had to charge the battery but once in 5 days. Let alone they have a speaker phone that you could hear the person as clear as day. With the t730 I had to charge it every night and it didn't last past noon. Let alone the arguments it caused because my husband couldn't hear me. It also keep going in and out of service all the time. I bought this junk at Radio Shack. Up till the time I purchased the t730 I had AT & T and never had a complaint. I also had my phone from AT & T for over 6 years. Radio Shack said this would be a better phone and coverage than the one I had. I laugh at them now. They didn't know what they were talking about or they just wanted to make the sale. We will see how the t720 does. If it isn't better then I am cancelling my service with Verizon. It isn't worth the frustration in our life. Life is to short to put up with junk. I don't care how good of a coverage area they have. If the phones are junk, what good is the coverage? Don't buy the t730 you will not be happy. I am very unhappy with this phone and we have a two year agreement. If the t720 isn't better, then it would be best for us to pay the fees, than live in frustration. Trust me PLEASE! Don't buy the t730. Your life isn't worth the frustration this phone will bring into it. Like someone said, I too wish I would have found this site before buying.

My first cell phone. What a mistake. Should have read the user reviews on Cnet BEFORE I bought it.

Signal quality is poor in many places around town, my gf's new Kyocera works much better in my house, so does my roommates older Motorolla v60. I experience a fair number of dropped calls, and others frequently have a difficult time hearing me on it.

Sensitive to temperature? skiing on a cold day, temps around 5 to 10 degrees farenheit, friend had an accident and I had to call ski patrol. Couldn't, phone battery died due to the cold (had just charged it on the drive up). Fortunately her older motorolla model worked just fine.

Finally I'm having trouble with moisture now that the rainy season is here. Got a little rain splattered on the phone (not a lot) and it quit working. Had to disassemble the thing and scrub corrosion off of the wiring. Now it works again... um, for now icon_smile.gif

Minor complaints: Dislplay doesn't have many colors, displaying images could be better. Web navigation is obtuse, not user friendly; slow and tedius. Ear piece volume could go higher. Battery life in normal temps could still be better.

Plus: I like the design, physically it would seem to be durable enough. Buttons, lights, etc. provide a good user interface.

I used this phone for more than a year with no problems, I drop it and the plastic cover brokes and all the problems listed in this website came along. It was a good phone, better than my audiovox wich I have know. Is good but not for a two year contract.

I am not picky about phones at all. My last phone was the cheapest one and looked horrible, but it worked fine and the battery ran for 3-4 days without needing a recharge. It finally broke after dropping it one too many times over 2 years of use, and I got the T730 as a replacement. I have been much more careful with this phone, I've never dropped it, and make sure it doesn't sit in the cold or anything that would mess it up.

After 2 months of use, my battery charger slowly stopped working. It would disconnect the charge within minutes, sometimes seconds of plugging it in. Eventually it stopped working at all. But my car charger always works and it stays connected all the time. I bought a new charger and the same exact thing happened.

After 2 months of use it has broken down so that I can only charge it for 2 minutes max at a time. Nothing is more frustrating than a phone at 1 bar of battery ALL the time. I never drive very far so I can't really charge it using just my car charger. And the battery when fully charged doesnt even last a day, its pathetic.

I could never figure out where the alarm is on this, I used my alarm religiously on my old phone but on this one i cant even find it. And the phone, while on my messed up charger keeps shutting on and off on its own.

Overall, this phone sucks, never even think about getting it if u like a battery that lasts and a charger that works. (and i cant imagine who wouldnt want that)
