Motorola V180 User Reviews

Very good voice quality. Seems to reject ambient noise very well. Easy to hear speakerphone is one click away.

Rf section seems powerful and easy on the batteries.

Very compact. About as light as you want a phone to be.

Well spaced keys.

Easy to replace battery, and small enough to keep a spare around.

Real USB port makes for easy connection to PC.

Easy to replace/customize case.

Phone lists can get long, but scrolling is easy.

Main color screen is easy to read, external display is also very crisp.

Ditto for built-in calendar, it is not as deluxe as some, but this is no PDA.

Obviously if you want a camera phone this is no good.

I can "speed dial" my v180 by simply pressing and holding the key associated with that phone list entry. I don't know if the earlier post had different firmware, a different set of provider options (I'm on AT&T), or was selecting numbers from their SIM (I have mine set to use the list I have entered on the "phone" not the SIM).

Minor point, but it makes the phone sound a lot harder to use than I've found...

Since it supports all three major GSM bands, my V180 has been successfully used in Germany, the UK, and the USA. So far, I'm pretty pleased with it. I have had no problems with signal strength anywhere. The battery life is also excellent.

The manual is horrible, however. Whoever wrote it should be fired.

I'm a bit disappointed with the voice dial feature. First, I had to re-program a soft-key so that I could access it without having to press 3 or 4 keys (which defeats the whole purpose of voice dial), then, I discovered that I could only store about 5 voice patterns. If more could be stored, it would help resolve the problem of having to scroll thru a very long phone book.

I don't have the USB software for it yet, but I hope to get it soon. I have seen it advertized for $35.

I really like this phone, I traded up to it from a Samsung that only had two of the 3 GSM bands.

I've had my V180 for quite a while now and it has been a good phone overall.

Bad: the navigation is ok but not great and the phone number scrolling is a little annoying. Voice dialing is a little cumbersome to get to, so I tend not to use it.

Good: screen is bright and clear, battery life is great, voice quality is good, and phone is tri-band (850, 1800, 1900) so should be usable in most of the world. Contrary to other reviewers I had no problems with the ear piece.

And finally, as a correction, another reviewer mentioned getting away from TDMA to GSM. GSM IS a TDMA system, it is not AMPS if that's what you meant, but it is a Time-Division Multiplexing architecture, so you can't get away from TDMA to GSM (btw, if you did mean going from AMPS to GSM, then its very true that you should make that switch, AMPS sucks).

Only CDMA varients (CDMA2000, UMTS, etc) can "get you away" from TDMA.

I was a bit disappointed at the V180. My previous experience had been with one of the early Nokia phones, and then with an LG5350. The LG5350 is comparable to the V180 in list price, so I am comparing it to the V180. Phone list is better managed in the LG5350: one can assign more than one phone number to the same name in the LG5350; not in the V180 which leads to a much longer list in the phone book. Speed dials in the V180 take four clicks for dialing (number, *, “select”, “talk”), two in the LG5350 (number, “talk”). Ringer tones available (without downloads) are 44 in the V180, 49 in the LG5350, with a much greater variety in the latter. The V180’s manual is crude in appearance: bad print, particular the bold lettering which is bleeding to the extent of becoming unreadable; basic information only, no going into details, so one is left to the “hit-and-miss” approach when trying to figure out how the phone is working. For international calls I use a third party provider (AccuLinq) because their rates are so much cheaper than the main phone companies’; in the V180, I had to figure out myself the meaning of “wait”, “pause”, “n”; crucial when dialing an access phone number and entering your ID before entering the overseas phone number – no reference at all in the manual. On the other hand, reception is good (which may have to do with the service provider, though), which I couldn’t say about the LG5350. Also, so far, no problems at all with the V180; with the LG5350, I had to replace the phone four times within the first two months.
I’d say, if you want an economical, basic (by today’s standard) cell phone, the V180 is alright. If you want anything a bit fancier and more user-friendly, you may want to go for phones by Samsung or LG.

Nice experience when using this phone. Certainly the menu is not easy to use as Nokia or Samsung mobiles but it is very complete.

The addressbook is great and maybe DvJ didn't read the manual or something like that since the cell phone allows you to save several numbers per contact. You just have to save them to the phone instead of saving them to the sim card and then you can create categories, assign different ringtones per category, etc...

The sound is great, as well as the ringtones and the speaker.

Also you can browse the Internet and send & receive multimedia messages.

In a few words: Great mobile if you know how to use it!!!

I STARTED TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THIS PHONE A FEW MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT IT. icon_sad.gif THE RECEPTION WAS NEVER REALLY THAT GREAT, BUT IT WAS ESPECIALLY BAD IN ENCLOSED BUILDINGS (WALMART, THE MALL, THE HOSPITAL WHERE I WORK)... MY CALLS WOULD BE SO FULL OF STATIC YOU COULDN'T EVEN HOLD A CONVERSATION AND THEN IT WOULD JUST SHUT OFF... AND I DON'T MEAN THAT IT WOULD DROP THE CALL.... I MEAN THE POWER WOULD ACTUALLY GO OFF. icon_frown.gif I'VE HAD THIS PHONE REPLACED 3 TIMES, AND THE SAME PROBLEMS KEEP OCCURING WITHIN A FEW WEEKS. I CAN'T STAND IT ANY LONGER, icon_sick.gif SO NOW I'M LOOKING INTO TRYING ANOTHER MANUFACTURER.

The phone is great. The manual is terrible. Customer support from Cingular is worse. Thanks to all the forum posters, I was able to get all the features to work. Got a mini USB cable and downloaded pictures and ringtones into the phone using Mobile Phone Tools. USB cable, PST, and MIDWAY reguired to download games into phone from computer. Found hundreds of games on the net for free (no sign ups).
Not at this time interested in GPRS internet service. The CSD internet access which TMobile, ATT and Cingular offered, is apparently terminated.
As a phone, what can you say, it works. Poly ringtones are loud enough to hear across the room and the GSM service now covers as large an area as the TDMA did. TDMA service is being phased out.

i love it, i can call from anywhere in my area, and its clear to talk on. it has aim and if you dont have an aim you can use you yahoo buddy list for all us anti-aol. the only problem that i have had so far is finding games to download. they offer plenty of games to download to select motorola phones except this one. all though they do offer some adventure games on select sites but i spent hours online looking for puzzle games and could only fine bejewled. the phone does have internet access if you sign up and if you do find a games, ringtone or grapic you want it is really easy to understand. the manual is clear and explains everything the only thing i didnt get at first was voice dial. but i understand everything now and i never want to give it up. it even have changable face plates!!!!

First, I would like to say, I LOVE my Motorolla cellphone!! icon_wub.gif

It is complicated to use, due to me always having had Nokia (which were easy to use),however;
1) with this new phone, the EAR PIECE is "USELESS". I had my phone for 5 days, given to me as a Mother's Day present from my oldest daughter!! Thank you Barbara for making Mommy look fashionable with a "FLIP PHONE" I would have Never bought one myself. I have purchased 2 ear pieces, thinking I had a bad cord. , yet it still does not work.
2) while I had my Nokia phone. I was and still with Sun Com, but I was convinced to convert from TDMA to GSM due to all TDMA's were going to be phased out. Well, LIES!! Personally I think it was done to PROMOTE these expensive cellphones!!
With my V180, I get drop calls, messages 2 days later, and cannot talk in Wal-Marts when I leave my grocery list at home!! icon_confused.gif This has never happened while I was usuing of my Nokia phones on the TDMA plan.
I just wish I had knew these things prior to changing over, now I am STUCK with a pretty, but USELESS phone, considering I drive for a living....I need the phone to be able to work with THE EARPIECE!!!
