Bad display and no screensaver

Reviewer: strike3d on Wed Jun 07, 2006

If I can stop just one person from buying this phone, registering to this forum and probably set myself up with junk mail, it will be worth it.
My wife received 3 Motorola V220 from an upgrade. At first everything was fine. Features decent. Then, My son’s phone display stopped. Warranty worked out but, they send a refurb unlike the new phone I sent back. Then not even 2 weeks later, Both my son’s phone and mine, the display went out. Again with the warranty. Again with refurbs. We ended up warranting out 4 times with his phone and 2 times with mine. To switch models, they wanted to extend our 2 year contract.
Screensaver feature. This feature makes no sense. The display backlight can only be set to turn off at 20,40 and 60 seconds. The Display Timeout can only be set to 1 or 2 minutes. The Screensaver, you can have it Off, 1 minute or 2 minute. So beware, if you download any animated screensavers, you will never see it.

Nice phone for the price

Reviewer: metaxin on Wed Oct 26, 2005

I've had this phone since January of this year and I think it's not too bad considering I got for free (kind of regretting the 2-year contract though). It's nice and small and it's highly hackable (which you will have to do to get the full potential of this phone).

Cingular disabled quite a few things on this phone. First off, Motorola's V220 is actually a quad-band phone but Cingular chose to remove one band i.e. the 900mhz band and make it tri-band. The 900 band isn't used here in the U.S., but it's useful in other countries. Cingular also removed the video playback option (V220 can play 3gp and MP4's that are in SQCIF frame size), Java uploading with cable, and the voice recording option.

You can enable all the aforementioned functions if you have a mini-usb cable (come w/ digital cameras), the right software, and a little bit of know-how. There are whole online communities dedicated to modifying cell phones that I never knew about until I got this phone and did the subsequent research into modifying it. It's even possible to switch the functions of all the buttons around (even number keys w/ software). Most (but not all) of the Vxxx hacks work for this phone as well.

If this phone had more memory and a screen that can be viewed in sunlight, then it would be a 10 for me, but alas, it doesn't. I've heard of people getting more than 2.5 MB of free space on the phone by deleting unnecessary files (also requires hacking), but 2.5 MB isn't much if you want to put video on it.

A word of caution: If you decide to hack your phone, be sure to read up on what you can and can not do cause you can mess up your phone beyond repair if you don't know what you are doing.

Tip: The phone can handle wallpapers that are 176x220 (native resolution of V-series phones), but if you want to get the wallpaper to look the best and still keep file size down, I suggest putting 176x176 jpeg wallpapers on it instead of 128x128. If you absolutely want the best quality wallpaper though, you should go with bitmaps (bmp, wbmp). They look the best of all, but take up a lot of space.

LCD Display Flaw

Reviewer: obxladybear on Fri May 26, 2006

Our family purchased 4 of these phone when we switched from Suncom to Cingular less than a year ago...as of now, only one is still working....my son's lasted about 6 months and then the camera died followed shortly by the LCD display....daughter's lasted about a month longer and "poof"..no more LCD display.....this past month, my LCD display joined theirs in the "dead zone"...I liked the phone while it lasted...especially the ability to set up different ringtones for each caller....but the unreliablity of the LCD display has made me determined not to get another motorola phone...(checking on ebay has shown that there are many of these same phones for sale without the LCD working)...must be a problem with their LCD supplier.... icon_frown.gif

Motorola V220

Reviewer: blondebubbelz on Wed Oct 19, 2005

i got this phone in april...it work great for me!! i had none of the problems these people have had!! mine worked fine for about the first six months...then one night i dropped it into a drink!! ive dropped a few of my phones into a liquid drink...and they never work again!! my v220 was the only one that did!! i let it dry out for about a day...and the next day, you couldnt even tell anything happened to it. the only thing the battery life only lasted a day, so i had to buy a new battery! so...like ive said, i liked my phone, the size was great it fit just about anywhere!! im really hard on phones...and my moto lasted thru alot of drops...smashes...spillings and much much more!! i think for a teenager or some like me that is hard on phones...this is a good priced picture phone!!

The Best Yet

Reviewer: Kubikpuppy on Tue Feb 22, 2005

icon_devil.gif I have been a customer with Cingular Wireless for about 2 years now & I have had a total of 5 Phones and not because I keep buying them but becasue most of them are garbage, but its like that with most companys, the Samsung x247 just went black screen one day and never cam back, the Simeins c61 had horrible reception and the buttons are way to small , and so on and so on with every phone un till now... FINEALY i purchased the MOTOROLA V220 and I have been happy ever sence this phone has not given me one problem EVER I always have reception the buttons are just the right size not to mention this is the FIRST phone I have ever had with any company that the speeker phone is awsome i never have to repet my self I can always hear the other person and the phone dose not have to be right in my face to beable to talk. Granted you need good light to take good pictures but the camra works and dose a preety good job too (for the price of the phone) I mean if you want outstaning pictures, then you shoul purchase a 6.1 mega pixel camra not a cell phone
I use this phone 7 days a week for a very busy business, its a good phone!

Motorola V220

Reviewer: WalkerP on Tue Oct 25, 2005

I've had my phone for 2 months now and its great. The only thing that could be inproved is the screen, it is a little small ( then again its better than my prvious phone, which blacked out forever after 2 weeks) Picture quality is good, sound quality is good, volume is good ( MP3s make the phone vibrate at loud volume - this happens with a few motorolas) connectivity is great for the price - USB! and so on. I'd also like to add, that When I bought my V220 ( on a pre paid virgin plan) It came with phonetools and a USB cable, weird. For $120 ( thats what i paid) its an incredible phone

Mixed Feelings

Reviewer: Drew Who? on Sun Apr 10, 2005

I have had this phone for a few months now and my opinion of the phone depends on what features your asking about.

My service, with Cingular, has been good, but has actually degraded somewhat since the AT&T purchase. Since AT&T and Cingular were not bad services (in my experience) seperately I am at a loss as to why they would get worse after the merger.

On the other hand, I recently found myself in a little corner of a state I had no idea I was going to end up in (long story). Nothing but analog Alltel service. I could, and did make calls which went at least as well as my regular service.

The bottom line on service is that before the merger I had clearer calls and fewer mysterious disconnects, though the coverage is such that neither of these have reached a fequency, yet, that would drive me to another service.

The screen: The screen is smaller than average, and it does look like there is plenty of room for an average screen. This means that several java games you might like to have on your phone will get the bottoms chopped off. However, on the plus side there are still plenty of games to choose from, which will fit and play fine.

The only other complaint I have about the screen is that it is nearly useless in direct sunlight. Indoors I find the screen to have good color and a clear picture.

Navigation: Learn to use it the way it was designed to be used and you will be less dissapointed. It is not as intuitve as it could be. I'm picky. When I enter the address book I can use the up and down arrows to scroll through the list of names, but I cannot use the right and left ones for the "Exit" and "View" functions, my fingers seem to want to do this very badly but, instead, I must use the "-" buttons, at the top, for these functions. My brain understands it, but my fingers just don't get it.

When you first open the phone you are presented with a background, the time, etc. Pressing the Menu button or the center navigation button take you to the main menu - a panel of 9 icons, 3x3 - by default. Ask yourself which four you use the most. When you figure this out do the following:

1) Go to "Settings", "Personalize", "Main Menu", "Reorder".
2) Place the icons you use the most in the even numbered positions. In the Icon layout of the Main Menu these correspond to the North, South, East, and West postions.
3) Return to the first screen and test the change you just made.

But what did you do? You just changed the menu so that you can access your most frequently used functions with one keypress. For example: I placed the games Icon in the number four position, now when I want to play a game I need only press the Left arrow button (West) one time. My address book? The Down arrow (South), icon position eight.

Have a fifth function you can't live without, but that you use least of all? Place it in position five (center). It is not one click away like the others, but with two presses of the center button you are there.

All of this also saves you not just time but a very small amount of battery life as well. This is because the phone does not have to paint the Main Menu, then the screen you want, but just the screen you want (except for the center button).

Battery Life: I followed the recommended proceedure of charging the battery for 12 to 15 hours the first five times, and running it very low between those charges. Even two days after its last charge I can talk longer than anybody I talk with who charged their phone the previous night. Follow the recommendations and I believe you will enjoy long standby and talk times.

Misc: This phone is quite hackable and there is plenty out there for it. Did you buy a USB cable with a Mini-B 5-pin on one end yet? If you didn't go get one now, I'll wait. icon_biggrin.gif While you are at the store you really should pick up a copy of the Mobile Phone tools, as well - and Yes, Motorola really should have included this CD with ALL compatible phones - at NO charge. No, do not worry about the box not listing the V220 as compatible, the compatibility list refers to the included cable, not the software.

Follow the instructions to get the software installed and get your phone recognized by the software.

OK, now what? Well for starters wouldn't it be nice to choose a background which fits your personallity? Well I don't know any foreign language, but I know a helpful web site when I see one. So head on over to http://media.motofan.ru. There you will find plenty of backgrounds (in the "Pics" section) formatted for 128x128 - the V220's screen resolution.

There are java games there and plenty of other fun things, just keep in mind that the Mobile Phone Tools lets you transfer Audio, Images, MMS, Etc., but not Java.

There are a lot of issues involved with Java games, not the least of which is the question of legal ownership.

The first thing I will say about it is that it may not be for the faint of heart - it starts be getting a piece of software which you use to change one of your phones internal settings - uploading Java over USB is disabled when you purchase the phone from Cingular.

The last thing I will say about it is that if I bought a Java Game I would want it stored on my computer. I would use the USB cable to upload it. Why? Because if I buy a different phone, or anything happens to this one I don't want to buy the game again. As long as I only install it and use it on one phone at a time, a phone I own, I am breaking no laws. But I refuse to pay for a game a second time just because I upgraded my phone. I have no problem with deleting it off the old one first - if it still works, and if it doesn't and cannot/will not be repaired then "no harm, no foul."

If you feel the same way then go for it!

I hope this helps you to get more out of your phone.

Overall I have enjoyed using the V220, and I have never missed a call due to any phone related issue. I just hope that at some point there will a firmware upgrade to address some of the navigational short commings (my opinion).

I have had my V220 for 2 months now. I pulled it out of my bag the other day and both the front and indide display were cracked icon_twisted.gif icon_mad.gif icon_wacko.gif icon_huh.gif icon_cry.gif . My phone had been fine before that. I have never had one problem with it until the other day. It made me very mand. I went into my Cingular store and they told me it would be replaced by a LG C2000 amd now i am hearing bad reviews about that. Oh and all of you people whining about reception, it is not the phone it is the provider!!!!! Get Over It

I have had the Motorola V220 for a while now. Overall the performance and size is great. But I hate the fact that you can't see the background image, due to function icons being in the way. I may consider upgrading to another make in the near future.

Motorola V220

Reviewer: geeman999 on Tue Jan 04, 2005

my daughter has a v220. I have a sony t637. The v220's screen is clearly inferior. It's battery life is less. It's reception is ok so far as I can tell.
It's an ok phone. It does have some nice advantages as well. Number one it plays true tone ringtones, and you can download games, ringtones, and themes via a usb cable if you download an improved version of java. The only problem is that the games can be truncated by the smallish screen.

Also the usb cable can be cheaply obtained on ebay. And the software can be bought at motorola for $30 bucks or else dare I say appropriated on limewire.

Motorola v220-help!!

Reviewer: boo12345 on Tue Mar 01, 2005

Okay well i have just recently purchased the v220. I think that its a pretty good phone, not great but not as horrible as some of these people make it sound. The dropped calls and all that stuff is your service, not the actual phone. Ringtones kinda suck but you can download. The backrounds are not very good but just the same you can take a picture of your best friend and put that as your backround. The camera isnt the best but for the price your paying its good. Overall its an okay phone.

V220 = The DEVIL

Reviewer: switched56 on Thu Oct 27, 2005

I've had this phone since May 2005. It's been pretty reliable and has done everything I've needed. Even a few of the digi-pics turned out nice enough to print icon_blink.gif Also, the PhoneTools software has been *very* handy. Anyone who has not played around with this does not know what they're missing, lol. Anyhow, over the course of the last 2 or 3 weeks, this phone has taken a nosedive. It's been dropping calls, several of the keys are not responding unless you push hard, and as of this past Monday, the CAMERA HAS STOPPED WORKING icon_mad.gif . I have not abused the phone in anyway. It hasnt been dropped, submersed, crushed, thrown, or pinched in a vice. It's falling completely apart though. My girlfriend's V180 has been doing quite well. She is able to make calls with 1 bar whereas standing next to her my V220 has no signal and is unable to make calls.

PROS:
Value...Relatively inexpensive
mp3 ringtones
Compact size
Nice keypad layout
Simplistic navigation
Good battery life
Stub antenna is cool and compact

CONS:
Craftsmanship seems shakey (read above, lol)
Displays are crap - not bright or legible in sunlight
No brightness feature, only contrast wtf???
Reception is mediocre
Memory not upgradable
Chrome bezel around digi-cam lens is UGLY
No stopwatch function - yes, a bit nit pickey i know

There's my two cents.

Newbie

Reviewer: XB-70 on Fri Oct 01, 2004

Hi from the Great White North. I looked at a number of reviews of this phone and it seems to provide an awful lot for a modest price.

Initially, it was not terribly intuitive (we did NOT RTFM) but with time we will learn more about it.

In terms of features, for the price, I'd say this is loaded. On the other hand, the memory size is quite limited.

In terms of performance, I would not say it's stellar. On the other hand, it's not terrible either. We've had three disconnects today alone - but they could be due to lousy coverage.

I'm currently in the process of getting into it and loading phone numbers and changing ring tones etc. To this end, I HATE paying $2.00 for a lousy ring tone or controlling software.

My next chore is to get a five-pin USB cable to attach to this phone and attempt to upload names, addresses etc. and, most importantly configuration and ring tones. My ultimate goal is to make this phone ring like an old fashioned rotary phone!

All in all, I'd rate the V220 a buy. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10.

The major thing it needs is that it should come with software and a USB cable.

Grow Up!

Reviewer: imerlink on Fri Sep 16, 2005

icon_exclaim.gif It's just a mobile phone, not an entertainment center. Some of the complaints sound like little children who've had their candy taken away. We've had the phone for almost a year, we are able to talk clearly, then again we don't have to put up with the 'Cing-u-lier' service in the US. The screen size works, we'er not playing games, we're doing business. On a scalee of 1 to 10 it's for sure a 7. For the price, it's hard to beat.

v220 phone #1: fuzzy speakerphone
v220 phone #2: battery would not charge
v220 phone #3: phone's software kept crashing
v220 phone #4: phone got extremely hot after placing one phone call
v220 phone #5: only speaker phone works. can't use the phone up to my ear nor can i use the headset.

since this model is getting old, please don't even think about getting this. oh yeah, and cingular's coverage with this phone SUCKS.

Motorola V220

Reviewer: bunwhisper on Mon Feb 14, 2005

I had one of these phones from Cingular. One morning, the teeny tiny video display corrupted into upside down letters and random pixels. Voice quality was terrible and calls dropped often. Its a cute little phone with nice features but it is like someone at Moto lost interest in finishing the nice design with actual quality. I was within my 30 days so I got a Samsung x427m as a replacement and love it!

Poor

Reviewer: Celluser on Thu Dec 30, 2004

The V220 is a cute little phone, but I found performance to be consistently poor. Reception was so bad that I was not able to place or receive calls unless I drove two miles down the street. I was on the phone with Cingular customer service every week. They replaced my Motorolla V220 with a Motorolla V180 which was no better. They finally sent me a Nokia 3120 which arrived yesterday. I have placed and received more calls in 24 hours with the Nokia than I did in 2 months with the Motorolla V220 & V180.

I agree with Very Mediocre on the V220's washed out screen and fuzzy speakerphone. Also, the "camera" takes such fuzzy pics. that the subject is a mere dark blob on the screen.

Motorola V220

Reviewer: metaxin on Thu Mar 03, 2005

I've had the v220 for over a month now and it's been pretty good so far. Cingular locked some of the features, but I learned how to re-enable them through seem editing. I even found a way to unlock the phone for free. I got it for free with a new contract with cingular, so I'm not complaining.

There's a bit of a problem with the speaker phone, but I'm not even sure if I caused it through hex.

the worst phone ever

Reviewer: dj_n_susan on Tue Apr 19, 2005

In December of 2004 i decided to buy me and my wife new cell phones so i went to cingular and purchased 2 motorola v220 phones the first one lasted about 2 months then the screen went blank and would not turn on so i called for customer service and they sent me out another v220 phone this one only lasted about 1 month and then in the middle of a call the phone turned off and i could not get it to turn on no matter what i did recharging it or getting a new battery. so i again contacted cingular and told them of my problem and found out i had paid full price for a new phone and had it only 2 months but cingular had sent me a refurbished phone to replace my new one and then informed them that my wifes phone was starting to act up by just dropping calls and turning off, cingular sent me a motorola v551 which i have not had any problems and sent my wife a refurbished motorola v220 which i had a fully charged battery in and once it died when i tried to recharge it, it would not even hold a charge at all and now cingular wants to send me another v220 and for all that are counting this will be the 5th motorola v220 phone in 4 months. i am seriously thinking about dropping cingular, throwing the phone in the trash where it belongs and going to a different provider.

Motorola V220

Reviewer: cilla on Wed Sep 07, 2005

Hey im nu to this site and id like to ad that about 5 months ago i purchased a motorola v220. Everything was going fine i thought this was a great fone until. One day out of the blue i went the the option settings and pressed personalise to change the style of the menu. when i clicked it the screen went dark like when the light turns off. Then it went blank and turned itself on again. I ignored it and thought it was nothing. But every time i tryed to go into the same option the exact same thing happened over and over. i had no idea waht was wrong. Then it got even worse. When i would turn my phone off it did the same thing as it did in settings. I was getting really anoied and decided i would see what was causing this. Then being stupid me i ended up blocking my SIM while playing round with my phone one nite. Now i cant do anything. If any of you have the same problem with this stupid phone or know what to do about it please reply!!! im desperate!

Worthless

Reviewer: elite818 on Mon Jan 10, 2005

Its been a months since I have had this phone. Externally, the phone looks great, many useful features and nice colorful screen. However, within the first weeks of service, even down to the very first call, I hear this annoying static in the background of my conversations sometimes drowning out the person I'm talking to. I thought: "O, maybe there was something wrong with the phone" so I contact AT&T, after an hr & a half long phone call, I was able get them to sent me a new phone. Well, the same happened with this one also. Annoying static, although a little improvement from the previous phone, now I get 40% clear calls and 60% static filled calls, that was nothing much more I could do (didn't think AT&T would send me another one). Well, as of two days ago (little over a month) the main speaker (not the speaker phone) stopped working so the only way I can place a call is by using the speaker phone or using a headset otherwise I would not be able to hear anything at all. I've had it with this phone, its a piece of crap! (maybe its why its free). I've had more problems with this phone than any of my other phones combined. I would never recommend this phone to anyone, I've use 3 motorolas in the last 5 years and the other 2 older phones were great but if this is the quality of what motorola is coming out with now, I would never use a moto ever again. Currently, a Ericsson Z500a is on the way from Cingular so I hope this would be better.

This phone is HORRIFIC!

Reviewer: BlackRoseBud on Wed Mar 16, 2005

Note: I had this phone through Cingular

I hate this phone! The camera quality is among the worst. When I was in the picture capture mode it would often go black. Menus are very annoying, and when I would change them to list it would take a long time to navigate through. I really wanted a color external screen and this did not have one. Caller groups are difficult to setup and maintain. Ring tones have to be assigned by group instead of by contact. Speak phone is very unclear. The only good thing about the phone was the ability to play MP3s (actual songs) as ring tones. I've owned many phones and this was the worst. I know now that Motorola can do much better, because I've seen both the V300s and V400s and like them, but they don't even compare to the Sharp TM150 T-mobile sent me for free, it’s the best camera phone I've seen out there.

Very Mediocre

Reviewer: XbLoNdiEo2 on Mon Dec 27, 2004

I got the V220 for Christmas, and I am already returning it for the V551, which I hear is wonderful. From the outside, the V220 phone is cute and looks alright. It is very lightweight, which is good. However, flip it open and you are rather surprised. The screen is tiny (and there is room for it to be larger) and has a washed out, ugly appearance. When I went to the Cingular store, the guy even told me all the phones were made like that!! The reason I was even at the Cingular store in the first place was because I couldnt access my voicemail. This phones layout is extremely confusing and it took the Cingular guy a while to even figure it out. Call reception is good if its a local call, but my friend from Texas calls me daily and I can barely understand him. The speakerphone is also very fuzzy and difficult to hear. The battery life on this phone, however, is pretty good...as long as you charge it at night you can go all day on this phone. Basically, if you dont mind a washed out screen and fuzzy speakerphones, this is an alright phone for the price.

This phone is iffy....

Reviewer: ashmegash on Tue Jul 26, 2005

icon_redface.gif My boyfriend, dad and I all purchased this phone almost a year ago. My Phone can receive and make calls, with the only exception that the person on the other end can't hear me. My boyfriend's phone, the screen blew, so he can use the phone perfectly for calls, but that's about it. Now my dad's phone is pretty fine, all functions are usable except when you hit the buttons it makes a hig pitch sound instead of the noise it should, and when you talk on it, it sounds like you're in a tunnel.

not impressed

Reviewer: Babygurl1101 on Sat Dec 03, 2005

icon_cry.gif this phone has been less than pleasing. about two weeks into buying it i started having problems. whenever i went into personalise my phone would freeze and go crazy and if i went into some other things it'd do the same thing. but now ive had it for about 2 months i can't send msgs anymore, i dont recieve msgs anymore, my calls go straight to voicemail and my voicemails dont even come through i have to turn my phone off for 10 minutes each time i want to see if i have msgs cause only then do they come in. it was a great buy but it is so poorly designed it was a real let down the camera is about the only thing that works properly but even that has shotty quality. icon_mad.gif

v220

Reviewer: liltrey808 on Wed Jun 15, 2005

icon_devil.gif the v220 is a horrible fone , i had it for about a month now and i thought it will be a cool fone at frist. But i knew i shoudent have gotten the fone because it looked ugkly with the big silver circle on the front of it . i was supprised when i opended the fone. the screeen is so small and has room to make it bigger . the motorola v180 v220 v256 are nit good fones . the good 1s are v400 and on. after a mont it starts to drop calls and the screen turns black and shuts off. most people think its the service cingular but its not its the crapy fone. then when u open it it makes that clickin noise and seeaks and the speaker phone u can barley undsestand. it is just horrible anmd has very bad color. then after i sent that 1 back like 6 times they sent me a v552 witch was great . it had a big screen (bigger than the razor and is a video phone ,but i recomend samsung fones like the X427 and the E317 ,those are wonderful phones the v220 was just made to make money i dontthink any 1 should have a v220

one of the best phones i had

Reviewer: royal_with_a_T on Thu Mar 01, 2007

icon_biggrin.gif when cingular first switched to sim cards i had updated to the v220, i kept this phone for almost the whole length of my contract, with no problems what so ever, excellent coverage, and everything worked like new. I am very harsh on phones, i dropped it in the snow, ponds, drinks, down stairs, in the middle of the road, and so on; and none of this broke my phone. it finally bit the dust, and not truly, until someone thought it would be funny to launch it over 200 feet into a building, then sending it back the 200 feet again. Even after the brutal beating the lcd's were in perfect shape, the camera worked fine, the only problem was the speaker and vibrating unit broke. i use my phone alot and needed a ringer, so i paid for the upgrade, the phones i've had ever since can't even compare! after i had the lg c1300, which didnt last long at all- my hrash use killed it and i got yet another phone from siemens, that died as well, then i tried a nokia phone- i liked the way it worked but am a flip phone person, and gave it to my dad when i upgraded - i now have the samsung x497- it is nice but is not like my motorola.
