Nokia 3200 User Reviews

1. Posted by Zadkhi Tue Dec 20, 2005 9:12 pm

For those who are looking for a little edge in their mobile phones, the Nokia 3200 seems to fit the bill quite nicely.

I'm on the T-Mobile network (and have been since late August of 2001) and I went overseas during the winter of 2003 and bought the Nokia 3200 in Malaysia to replace the Nokia 6100 that had been stolen from me a few months before.

I had steady reception in Malaysia in the Kuala Lumpur area using one of their prepaid SIM chips and when I returned to the US, my reception on my home GSM T-Mobile network in the San Francisco Bay Area was rock solid for the most part.

Here's a review of my likes and dislikes:

What I Like: icon_smile.gif

Reliability in reception - I get very few dropped calls even in areas of low reception. I can still get reception at the Hewlett Packard campus in Cupertino, CA where most GSM mobile phone users can not.

Strong reliable battery life - I've gone a week without charging my phone (yes, I made a few phone calls during that time, all under 5 minutes) and when I finally charged it, the battery still wasn't dead

Clear conversations! - Unless I am in a terrible area or if the person I am speaking with is in a bad area, conversations are perfectly crystal clear without and with the loudspeaker.

Unique keypad - Where a lot of people may complain about the funky keypad, that was actually a selling point for me because I wanted something different. I SMS just fine with it, too.

SMS/texting features - The text editor works amazingly well and it's a snap to choose the right word if I choose to use the editor. It's also really easy to program words into the dictionary as well and the dictionary feature sure is nice! Also, when you're emailing, the phone automatically allows you to search for PB entries where you listed email addresses.

Convenient size - It's a regular candybar sized phone and it slips into a pocket and it isn't easily crushed

DIY custom covers - It's the artsy person in me who loves this feature.

Solid User Interface - Navigation and shortcuts are a SNAP with this phone and with all other Nokia phones. You can customize the menus and customize your shortcut keys.

Phonebook features - You can add an image, email addresses, and notes to PB entries.

Schedules, Reminders, Etc - You can program notes and reminders in the calendar feature, which can be terribly useful. I've programmed goodness only knows how many reminders and every time without fail, I get my notices on time.

The flashlight! - LCD flashlight is darn powerful for being so small! I picked my way through pitch darkness with this flashlight and it doesn't drain the battery, too.

The cell phone strap loop! - It seems like an insignificant thing, but having a cell phone strap loop at the top of the phone right in the middle between the infrared port and the power button was/is a lifesaver. For those on the go or who are prone to forgetfulness, being able to loop one's phone to a lanyard can save them the trouble of always having to grope for the phone. I've lost/had my phone stolen 3 times in a row over a period of 6 months before this phone (more than likely because I've never had a loop and just resorted to holding the phone in my hand or dropping it into a bag), and now, I keep this phone on a lanyard which I can either wear or clip to something.

Asia-specific features! - If you happen to get this phone overseas like I did, then you can also look forward to the usage of Asian languages in your SMSing and in your menu! My phone came from Malaysia, so I can type in Malay, Mandarin (using both pinyin and radicals!), and of course, English.

What I Dislike: icon_sad.gif

Transferring images/ringtones to/from Phone to PC - You need a special cable for this and if you don't already have one, then you need to buy one and they aren't exactly cheap. Not only that, you have to make sure your PC has the right connectivity required to connect.

Things I Never Really Use: icon_huh.gif

These are features I just don't ever utilize and it's not necessarily because they are bad; I'm just not the sort to use these features.

Radio - It works just fine, actually, but I listen to my MD player instead

Multimedia Messaging - I have to pay for it, so I don't use it.

WAP - So long as I get decent reception which is 99% of the time, I get solid WAP access. But I don't use my phone for its WAP features very often.

So there you have it.

Overall, on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best, I'd rate the Nokia 3200 as an 8.5 for someone who is like me who's looking for a phone which can provide practicality, usability, and reliability, while also offering a few unique features and maybe a little edge. icon_smile.gif

It's really worth buying for $213. The camera quality is OK (same as 7250i), and there is night mode and zoom also which is really usefull. There is a media menu in which the camera, radio and voice recorder is located. The voice recorder is really nice, which can be played as ringtones after recording.yes the polyphonic ringtones are ok coz its just 16 chords. The pictures and ringtones can be send to other phones through IrDa. The flash light down is really nice. it is powerfull enough. Yes even the covers which have similar ringtones and wallpapers are really cool. icon_biggrin.gif

The phone would have been better with atleast 2 MB and 65k colours. Anyway I really love this phone.......It's really better than the 7250/7250i. icon_smile.gif

This phone is a good phone and a fun one, but to it there is a few downsides. The camera pictures is a little grainy, but nevertheless fun! The cut-out covers are a plus to this phone. I noticed to back plastic cover to this phone, however, is a little loose. I have heard other complaints on this also, so I am not the only person experiencing this problem. There was one glitch in the phone. When I would try to record myself via sound recorder, I would have to repower the phone off and back on again to gain success at listening to the previous or all the other recordings. I was able to fix this problem by removing the phone's battery for apr. 10 secs and replacing it. The reason for myself doing this is because once the battey have been removed up to apr. 10 secs, the phone's software will reset. Once the phone was repowered the voice recorder was fine. The cut-out covers are fun and creative. The phone comes with a few blank covers for you to design yourself. The flashlight is very cool. Not as good as a handheld or lantern, but hey if you are in the dark and cannot find a light switch, need to plug in a lamp, or get up for a drink of water in the middle of the night, this is perfect. I have never browsed the internet with the imbedded WAP 2.0 browser. The radio is a nice feature to have. Taking a jog or laying on the couch at home, this is a very conveient feature. Type in what this station frequency is, or do a search for stations via phone's menu. Signal strength in my neck of the woods is very good. Calls are clear, but the speaker or earpiece on the top of the phone is a little small. I get an echo sometimes, but I had this on my Nokia 3595. My provider, Cincinnati Bell Wireless, claims this is in their network. When I roamed with my 3595, I do not recall having echo problems. Keypad may be too small for people with small fingers. The keypad may also take time to get used to. Bottom Line: I rate this phone as a being HAPPY with it, BUT disappointed in a few features. Out of 10 stars, I would have to rate the Nokia 3200 7.5 stars. Box contents: Nokia 3200 Phone, wrist strap, battery, charger, earpiece, two predesigned cut-out covers, and a few blank cut-out covers to design yourself. Review by Daniel Johnson. icon_smile.gif

Really nice phone, I love it.

Pros:

- Small
- Good camera
- Interchangable skins
- Great loudspeaker
- Easy to use
- Some say that it's fragile becuase it's plastic, but I haven't had a problem with it.
- Good and bright display.
- Good reception, I haven't lost a phone call, even on 1 bar.

Cons:

- Hard to hear through the earpiece,I usually use the speaker because of that.
- Have to have a special headset(30 bucks) to listen to the FM radio.
- No rebates

Overall it's a great phone, and I wouldn't change my purchase. Some say it screams "gay!"... but not if you change the skins...

I really liked the Nokia 3200. The buttons take a few minutes to get used to but then they're no problem. The FM radio is absolutely a must in future phones. And i'm surprised no one has mentioned the built-in flashlight. The only thing I dont like is that the IM Client responds slow and isn't on real time. Perhaps this is just the service. The camera is decent- or at least the good enough for a phone.

I had this phone for 1 complete year till i dropped it and broke the Display unit and the PCB circuit.
Completely in love with it, i decided to move to a better Nokia phone, and landed up buying with the second mistake of my life (first one being marriage), and bought a Nokia 6600. Used my nokia 6600 for 2 days now (after spending some 4 hours of installing all software, reading manuals of Nokia 6600, here are my comments about Nokia 3200 instead since i miss it now-
1) Its light weight and small design. I keep it in vibration mode and it easily slips in my trousers/Jeans
2) Voice is really clear and the speakerphone is what i use while driving. I installed a small stand for it (custom built) and by just pressing 1 button, i can talk while i drive. No investment needed
3) Keys - it takes time to get used to it. I i migrated from Nokia 5110, to Nokia 3300, to Nokia 3200. But once i got used to the small button in the middle (i think they call it 6 way button), it was really a breeze.
4) Setup- By configuing my "Go-To" menu, with 2 keyclicks, i can setup my alarm clock or move to "Office" Mode- vibratory mode. 3 clicks on "outside". which is vibratory plus ringtone
5) Nokia PC Suite - I am not very SMS friendly person, but with this software for 3200, i used my computer to send SMS, edit address book, syn with my office email and calendar
6) Memory is less, but i can easily trade my 4 day old Nokia 6600 with a black Nokia 3200
7) Camera is not worth talking about, but hey at that price i got this, i invested in a good Canon Digi-camera
8 ) Battery - Even after 1 year of use, i get 2 plus days of battery life
9) Radio - I tuned the radio to an American Radio Station, while on a (Non-English-German) project site for 2 months and i used the radio so much that i got a complaint from the hotel where i was staying, so you can imagine how loud is the speakerphone.
9.5) Radio - Nokia, why do i have to plug in my handsfree tol isten to radio. Also, while listening to radio, i can switch to Speakerphone with handsfree attached.. cannot figure out this logic.
10) Cut-out Covers - as somebody mentioned, Nokia targetted to a really small crowd, yes its really "Gayish or maybe girlish". I have to really search the whole town for a black, non-transparent cover and finally after a lot of persuasion, got just 1, which was a cheap plastic thing and eventually broke down. Nokia please, always have black cover as an accessary for all of your phone.
11) Memory is good, but now since i broke the phone and cannot access the address, i am completely lost in terms of asking people for their numbers and storing it.
12) Data Backup - I created several backup-, and stored it on my laptop. When i installed the software for Nokia 6600, the restore functionality doesnot have Nokia 3200 as an option, so all of my data from Nokia 3200 is gone. Nokia, please make a phone independant back-up as a key requirement for your back-up... since people would obviously try and move the data from the old phone to newer models.

In a way, i would give it a 8/10 considering its size, price, but would appreciate if Nokia Product team consider the entire customer base as their users, instead a small fraction of them.

I own a Nokia 3200 and I think it's a good phone, no better-no worse. The main feature is the camera which is good for the person who doesn't want to connect up to the computer and print it out and is ideal for viewing on the phone. The radio is good but you need to buy a handsfree kit, luckily I got one free. The cut-out covers are cool and the Java games really help you enjoy owning this phone.

The 3200 is Nokia's newest "teen" phone. I refer to it as such because no adult in their right mind would be seen with the William Hung of phones. icon_razz.gif
Actually the 3200 is a nice phone with some great features. First off...the phone has a camera, a crappy one, but a camera nonetheless. For caller id pix and occassional acts of weirdness it suffices. The cutout covers are pretty nifty and you can even print your own cover! I printed a copy of my phone bill to remind me never to send a thousand text message votes for Diana Degarmo.
The other really cool thing about this phone is that it has EDGE capabilities. Doesn't mean much but when you send an MMS picture message this phone is much faster than the others. Don't forget about the flashlight either.....comes in handy when you can't find your pants.
The only thing I absolutely hated about this phone is the looks. It just looks too "girly" for my tastes. I can handle the 4096 color screen (65k TFT or higher would have been nice) I thought the numbers would be problem at first but they were actually easy to use. The picture quality on the camera isn't really great compared to other phones on the market today...so don't buy for just this reason.
**Pros
-EDGE Speeds
-Camera!
-Flashlight!
-Cutout Covers
**Cons
-Camera!
-Oooogly

Although I like some of the features of the Nokia 3200, such as the flashlight and FM radio, the bottom line is you should not buy it because three-way calling flat out doesn’t work. I have tried three different Nokia 3200 units and they all exhibit the same problem. When you set up a three-way conference call and one party drops out, it is impossible to re-add that party or any party to the conversation. The phone displays an “Error in connection” message and gives up. Note that my wife’s LG phone on the same network performs flawlessly. Because this is obviously a design problem that should have been corrected at the factory, it cast doubts on Nokia’s ability to engineer a quality product. I now wonder what other flaws this phone, or any Nokia mobile phone, might have. My recommendation is to stay away from this phone.
