N71
Pros: Good size memory, great screen views, ability to edit contact labels, plenty (albeit irrelevant) extras, double camera, many of the features and controls aren’t too different from past Nokia phones, very solid – doesn’t fall apart/break when dropped hard or into water,
Cons: Too big and bulky – we’re in the 21st century, hello?; Freezes up when a text message is going out, process of switching to a waiting call is different from past Nokia’s making it confusing for long time customers (esp as there isn’t a need for this change), phone freezes for no apparent reason for an unlimited time, and switch button doesn’t work- the remedy is to take out the battery, hard to get rid of a missed call icon—one has to go to the actual missed call page again to get rid of it even though you already read the missed call message. The memory card slot opens too easily.
Review:
It’s a great phone if you don’t care about the size and weight. As always, Nokia is brilliant when it comes to user-friendliness so it’s possible for anyone of any age to use. However, Nokia needs to work on text message freezing; it’s the most annoying thing about the phone.
FIRST IMPRESSION & PROBLEMS
The background looks like a computer screen, which is very nice – it accepts external images very well and displays your calendar on the front. So even if you don’t put an alarm on an item, seeing it reminds you already. The camera (at the back) is very good, and there’s also a camera at the front, so that you can’t see what you look like before you take a picture. You can also adjust the type of picture you want taken, however, the camera on the front of the phone takes very dark & pixilated pictures.
There’s a radio and music download station, and it seems the text message holding space is almost unlimited.
I don’t use a lot of the extra features and I think Nokia should eliminate a lot of them and work more on general operation of the phone eg more memory space to avoid the freezes, a longer list of sent messages, dialed/received/missed calls, automatic daily alarm so that I don’t need to re-set my alarm every night before I go to bed. Also in older Nokia phones, I had the ability to manage a personal dictionary, although now I can add words to my dictionary, I don’t have the ability to eliminate others any longer– which can make predictive text difficult to control for words I use everyday.
Also, the keys on this phone are so small it makes texting very difficult and the numbers/letters are colored by the light of the phone = very difficult to see them in a bright room. The earpiece is also on a weird string that goes around one’s neck – what’s up with that?
I’ve had no problems with battery life, it charges very quickly and the accuracy of number of battery life bars to the actual battery life remaining appears to work very well.
CONCLUSIONS
As always, Nokia has delivered a product that is very easy to use; and the transition from one application to another is very smooth and intuitive despite all the unique or “complex” features embedded in the phone.
