Bought this instead of storm, as heard of way to many problems with storm.
While it has a smaller screen. It actually more capable then the storm.
To get the most out of the 5mp camera you need to tweak the settings, but have to say the smile mode is really cool. it will track and focus on the subjects smile/mouth and snap the pic as soon as it in focus with no need to push button !
With some third party software like PhoneEx (www.iconsoft.com) you can make phone more touch friendly. And in some cases look and act similar to iphone software.
memory card slot will support 16g for total of 32g of extra memory. and with a few setting changes battery life is good of a PPC. (2 full days with moderate to slightly heavy use for me so far )
Problem both this and storm has is app do not close when tapping the X button need to use task manager and kill the apps to save battery life and memory use.

Battery life, heat, apps

This is my second omnia, first one was replaced because the accellarometer went bad . . .I have had the same issues with - both - units . . and others using the phone echo the same frustration.

Let me clarify battery life issues so there is no confusion . .
When you play a movie on the phone or through the video cable (regardless), you find that the usable life of the phone after a std 2 hr movie is about 4-6 hrs before the low voltage alarm starts going off.

If you listen to music on you train ride to work (about 1.5 hrs) through either blue tooth headset or plug in head sets, the battery life is about 4-6 hrs before the low voltage alarm starts to go off.

If you have a "bad phone day" and start making phone calls to resolve, you can anticipate about 90 - 120 min of phone use before you start hearing the low voltage alarm. This is 25% of the "advertized" phone time.

Heat:
the back of the unit gets hot enough for you to feal the heat of it in your pocket or on the case. A friend with an IR temp sensor took a reading while we were in a meeting . . .after my ride in (movie and a few calls) it was at 117 degrees F.

After my afternoon jog (music and a few calls) it was at 105 degrees F

The hot area is next to and around the battery . . . . this is pretty hot to me and pretty hot for a lithium ion to be housed - - in my book . . .

Apps.

Although there ARE millions of apps out there for windows mobile, there are few that are truly compatible with windows mobile 6.1 because of the screen rotate feature . . . many if not most of the older apps crash when the rotate function starts.

There are 11 apps listed for the omnia on verizon's site and out of those only 3 are made to take advantage of the accellometer function.

There are no "reasonably priced" apps out there for this device.

Maybe I am Itunes store biased . . . . .but there is NOTHING like this for windows mobile . . . . . downloads dot com . . maybe but not even close to itunes depth or pricing. . .

Somehow Verizon and MS have blocked Google Maps as you can not enter text to find a destination in the app once loaded on the Omnia.you can not access the GPS at all AND you can not even search for an address through the app as they have blcoked text entry in the search box. online through other map sites you can . .but the google app will not work other than slewing in and out to an area . . . . very frustrating!

MS and Samsung need to get with it if they want to compete in a real market.

To be honest you didn't look too hard for apps, its windows there are millions of apps.
As for the battery life, do you really think you can watch video on any phone for 4-5hrs and the battery not die?
As for your screen calibration issue, I would say problem is your phone I have had no such problems. The stock keyboards suck I agree, but that takes us back to my first comment, you didn't look too hard. everything you need and want is available with simple google search.
I even upgrade to winmo 6.5 So all the software you could want is avail!

As for any other points you made really didn't bother to read your full review. Not trying to flame, and not an omnia fanboy. Just saw IMO bogus complaints.

There are issues with the phone (IE gps locked by verizon, screen not as visable in sun as would like, etc) but what phone doesn't.
This is not an Iphone or an Iphone killer and you shouldn't look for one anywhere you want in Iphone get the Iphone!
This is a solid performer, once you get it customized to your liking you will like it.

Hey all,

I swapped out my storm for the Omnia 24hrs after purchasing the storm.

now that I have had my omnia for three months and had the ability to really take it out and use it, I can tell you that my choice to swap was not a wize one.

With Windows mobile 6.1 (omnia) there are no real apps available and non being developed as windows 7.0 has been announced and will not be backward compatibile.

The battery life on the Omnia is 8 hrs. Unplug from the charger at 7am with a fiull cahrge message, receive the warning by 2 to plug in and recharge or face possible data loss.by 5pm, the battery is dead - just in time for the ride home!

If you watch a movie, the battery is dead in 4 - 6 hrs!

The unit generates a tremendous amount of heat when used for movies, continuous talking or music . . to the tune of just over 100 degrees at the backplate! This is the second unit I have and the same battery time and heat is present.

There are no apps of use out there and backward compatibility between windows mobile versions is quirky at best.
I have been trying to find a calculator that will work with something as time sheets for three months to no avail - for Blackberry, there are three!

The alignment of the touchpad is fluid and needs to be recalibrated at least once a week or the keyboard is unusable for typing with anything but the sylus.

The OS crashes, locks up or boggs down at least once a day to the point that it needs to be shut off and restarted . just like windows!

Syncornizing with outlook works most of the time but hangs up often causing lost data on either outlook on my PC or in the omnia.

I have been in to my Verizon store three times for email sync problems with the POP servers I use. I have not even tried to link it to my business server with the issues I have had so far, I just foreward all that mail to my personal POP account to keep it simple.

The accellerometer has already failed once and the handset has had to be replaced under warranty - which Verizon did without question.

The only thing that I can say that the Omnia does do better than any other PDA phone is the camera. With 5 mp resolution, the thing takes drop dead gourgous pictures and video.easily 3x better than the i phone or the storm . . . . . I forgot my Sony 5mp camera at home Easter morning and used the omina in it's place . . . not too shabby, we printed the pics up to shutterbug and all enjoyed them . . . better than I would have expected far better than any simple digital camera I have used and far better than I would have dreamed . . . the video was perfect . .better than my older cybershot 707 but not as good as my newer cybershot.

One of my co workers stayed true to his storm and we have been comparing notes . . . . and sharing frustrations.

Since Verizon did the latest update to the Storm, 90% of the issues he had with his phone are now resolved - mine with the Omnia are still brewing.

In closing, I do like the service I have received from Verizon, It is night and day compared to the crap I went through for 11 years of Sprint.

I wouldnt take Sprint service if they gave me the phone and free service for a year . . . a year of dropped calls and rude, unhelpful customer service are just not worth the head aches!

If you really want an Iphone - go buy one, there is no replacement - as no one has the number or depth of apps that Apple has to support their phone.

If you want and Iphone but do not want to deal with ATT, the Storm or the HTC are great options, I would not recommend the Omnia for their lack of apps, lack of battery life and other issues listed above!

Phil
