Get this phone
Reviewer: jds305 on Mon Sep 06, 2004
I originally bought a Kyocera SE47 slider phone, liking the design. Pretty soon I realized that beyond the cool design, it was really just a peice of crap with a speakerphone. Well I decided to bring it back to trade in for the Samsung SCH-A670 and through some amazing deal or some amazing mess up at the Verizon store, it was only an extra $5. This has to be five of the best dollars I've ever spent.
The A670 is a phone designed for people who aren't looking for gimmicks, but a really solid cell phone used primarily for making calls. It's very sleek and small and feels very sturdy. Both the inner and outer screens are high quality. The inner screen is probably one of the nicest that I've seen. The outer screen lights up when you hold the volume button for 2 seconds.
The camera is also very nice. You can take between 40 and 200 pictures, depending on the quality. In the lower qualities you can zoom in 2x or 4x. There are several color tones to change the appearance of the pictures. The videos aren't all that great, but what do you expect from a cell phone? A really cool feature is that you can close the phone in camera mode and take pictures of yourself using the outer screen. It works well as mirror too.
One feature that really makes this phone stand out is the voice dialing. I was amazed to find out that the phone has voice recognition for any name entered in the phone book, with absolutely no need to train the phone to your voice (meaning that you don't need to record voice names for anyone!). I don't think I've ever seen a phone that can do that. Also, the digit dial feature allows you to naturally say a phone without pauses.
The only negatives I can find is that there is no speakerphone, no Bluetooth capabilities, and you can't send videos. I don't have Mobile Web, but when I tried it in the store is seemed to be exactly the same as the higher end phones. Except for the speakerphone, these really aren't features I care about.
All in all, this is a great cell phone. It has everything (except for speakerphone) that you need in a solid phone, and some really cool extras to make it stand apart. Plus, every feature is well designed and intuitive. I haven't found anything where I found myself thinking "That's stupid. Why'd they do that?"
For the price and features, you can't beat this phone.

Samsung A670
Reviewer: Smlowe5 on Wed Jul 05, 2006
Okay, i have to say, maybe im just lucky, but this phone has been great and i have not had ANY problems with it whatsoever. I've actually been through 2 of these phones but i wouldn't blame that on the phone because the problem was my first one was stolen (not broken or anything). so basically i had my first phone for about 1 year (got it december 2004 stolen november 2005) and got an insurance replacement for 50 dollars, still works great i've had this second one for about 8 months. Good phone.

Great phone
Reviewer: KingWill00 on Wed Feb 09, 2005
I love this phone! one of the best phones I have had. The voice recognition feature is great, and I didn't have to train the phone to my voice. The call quality is excellent and every single call is loud and clear, even in poor signal areas. This phone is a vast improvement from my old SCH-A530. My only gripe with this phone is that if you consistantly play with it (ie: using the camera/video or playing games) your battery is gone. if you just use it as a phone, which it is, the battery life is pretty much the same as any other cell phone. This phone has a sturdy, solid build, and it doesn't feel flimsy at all. This phone is a great buy.

Broke
Reviewer: SarahM on Thu Feb 23, 2006
I loved the phone when I got it, but it broke pretty quickly. I admit I am kind of sloppy with my phone it generally has a passing aquaintance with the floor, but this phone didn't even last 6 months with me, first a small chip came off one of the sides, then as I was talking on it and stood up the other side came loose and the flip part started disconnecting, I should have just gotten a new phone, but I got a headset and just was going to live with it until I could afford a new phone or until my contract ran out (this was already a replacement for my original phone), but then I dropped it again and the display part completely separated from the key pad. So if you are really careful with your stuff this may be a good phone, but if you live a relatively active life and your stuff occasionally falls out of your pockets or purse, this is not a good phone for you.

No Signal, no features, not good!
Reviewer: aggie223 on Tue Sep 05, 2006
I have had this phone since December, and it is by far the worst phone I have ever owned. It started out ok, but then I realized that it got poor signal, no speakerphone, no stupid games, no wallpapers, none of the fun stuff that you don't think you need until you don't have it. I'm constantly taking pictures of the inside of my purse (if you press the camera button for about 3 seconds, it activates the camera). The battery live is very short, I have to charge my phone about twice a day to get by. If you call a person more than once in a row, the previous call time is replaced by the more recent call time. I am very disappointed in this phone and can't wait until I can finally replace it with something I can make more than a 5 minute call on.

Pretty Sweet, But not for "Tech Geeks"
Reviewer: s8m2s on Tue Aug 03, 2004
Yes i am a Technology hore. And this phone has some prity nice features.
The phone is basically solid, more so then the LG's. I can't realy comment on the reception, as i was a Nextel user and so i don't have a old Verizon phone for comparison.
At first i thought this phone was the coolest, it has a Camera with flash, (something i've never had on a phone before), Awsome Voice activated features, Audio memos and video recording. One thing i found out about prity quick is that though the camera does not rotate you can still take a self pic using the front mounted screen.
Now for the sadness despite that this phone was relesed just a few months ago and is Samsungs top of the line (for verizon) it is missing some features.
No Mobile Web 2.0 (it does have mobile web though just not the newest version)
No Mobile IM (no app, TXT only)
Can Capture Vid but can not send (knew befor perches)
No Speakerphone (also knew befor perches)
No Blue Tooth (no verizon phones have this yet)
Flash sucks, it's realy not a flash at all, just a light that messes up pics (better then nothing i guess)
and thats about it... i told you i'm a Tech Geek, other then that stuff this is a great phone. Good sound quality, fast easy to use menus, beautiful LCD screen, it's a realy nice phone. and it's killing me that i'm stuck with a almost perfect phone. I am going to keep it since the phone i wont doesn't exist.
If you won't a realy HQ Verizon camera phone this is it. and if your OCD and have to have everything, get it anyway or you can what for the PDA/GPS/Bluetooth/mp3 player/speakerphone/with Moble web 2.0 but you'll be whating awile cuz it my never come.
PS: i got moble web cuz i can't stand that the moble web shortcut button didn't do anything. ahh i need help
Good phone though.

The Good & The Bad On The SCH-a670
Reviewer: Tabun on Tue Jan 16, 2007
I was impressed with call quality here in the Dallas area. Not many dropped calls on Verizon. However, I've had to replace this phone TWICE due to the hinge breaking and the phone ending up in 2 pieces! Also, no matter what I did, I would ALWAYS end up taking pictures on accident with the camera button on the side of the phone, and as another user pointed out, if you call someone, then call that person again, it replaces the original call in the log with the new call, leaving NO RECORD of the previous call! Overall, I would NOT RECOMMEND this phone. There's an LG that's similar to the 670, but without these flaws and it has a speakerphone.

From Motorola t720 to Samsung a670
Reviewer: Wonderfully on Tue Jul 05, 2005
I just got a Samsung a670. I really like it! The pictures are good quality and the videos are pretty good too. There's a lot of personalizing options including ringtones, wallpapers, etc. The preloaded wallpapers aren't fantastic, but you can take pictures and set them as your wallpaper. The preloaded ringtones are definately a step up from what I'm used to, but they're not the best you can get. There are--I think--15 of them. The phone also allows you to send pictures to other phones and email addresses. The Get it Now feature isn't new to me, but I find it easy to navigate through and very helpful. I personally don't find much use in the web browser, but there have been a few occasions when I need to use it. The phone is primarily for calls. I'd say it's a business phone. Sleek and stylish, but not so much a teen's fashion accessory.

Good Phone but...
Reviewer: jinupro on Wed Jun 08, 2005
I got this phone about 3 months ago and i found many things i like about it and many things i disliek about it. A major dislike about it is the design. The clamshell design looks very awkward to me as a flip phone compared to many of the T Mobile, Cingular, AT&T Wireless, and other Verizon Samsung phones. Some of the advantages and disadvantages are:
Pros--
1.) Great camera quality
2.) "Mirror" mode for self-portraits
3.) Easy-to-use voice recognition
4.) Small and compact
5.) Video capture
6.) Good sound during conversations
7.) 500 phonebook entries with separate groups (i.e. Friends, Family, VIP)
Cons--
1.) No games included
2.) Preloaded ringtones are horrible
3.) Silver color gives a grayish, rusty look.
4.) Front screenlight illuminates after 5 seconds.
5.) Can't send videos
6.) Bad connection in crowded areas
7.) No speakerphone
When I first got this phone, i thought it was absolutely great. But after looking through some details and comparing it with some othe phones, it didn't seem as good as before. There aren't any games and there aren't many entertaining features. This phone is mainly for people who just need a nice, compact phone for calling friends and family members. I am currently waiting to get a Motorola V625 or until a new Samsung phone comes out around december. The phone has many positive features and is a solid, well-rounded phone, but do not expect anything special from it.

A670...third times a charm?
Reviewer: Duskb on Wed Mar 15, 2006
Simply put I went through 3 of these phones over an 8 month period, it was by far the worst phone I have used to date. Verizon ultimately agreed to upgrade me to a phone that worked right after the 3rd attempt.
The most annoying fault of this phone was that it had a habit of dropping reception at the most random times with no explantion. I'd could be anywhere on the phone for 10 minutes without a hint of noise or connectivity issues and after hanging up and dialing again to someone else the phone would go into "no reception" mode, without even moving a foot. I'd constantly have to reboot the phone so it would go look for the network again, otherwise the phone would be down for as much as 5 minutes before it "entered" the service area again. in some cases when it lost "network sync" if I tried rebooting it the phone would freeze on powerup and I would have to remove the battery for a "hard" reset.
I have it from Verizon that this is not normal behavior for this phone but after three attempts to get it right I am not sure I believe them. If you are on Verizon and you are thinking of using this phone in the L.A. area, I'd avoid getting it.

I AM SICK OF THIS PHONE!!!
Reviewer: caesar6591 on Fri Dec 16, 2005
My mom and I both had i830's. We loved them. Nextel coverage was and still is very bad in our area. So we decided to switch to Verizon. It was buy one get one free and it seemed like a good phone.
The first few days I was in love. Color screen, camera, ringtones, and games. Then I was starting to get sick and tired of it. The phone has barely any custimization. On my i830 I could change the colors and Arrow Key directions. All you can do is set a banner and select you menu style (list or icon). There is no speakerphone, which was upsetting. Text message alerts still make noise even when the phone is in silent mode. That became a problem at school.
All in all, this is a pretty good phone. But if you like to customize, this is not the phone for you. I give this phone a 6/10.

A couple of gripes
Reviewer: DjMikeWatt on Thu Jan 13, 2005
I just got the a670. I have a couple of gripes (coming from an LG vx6000).
First, the outer screen is almost useless. If the phone is closed and I reach up and hit one of the outside buttons (like vol up or down) I expect that the outer screen will illuminate... no such luck. Also, the light on the outer screen goes out immediately when you close the phone. I am used to being able to choose how long it stays lit up (5 sec, 30 sec, 1 min, etc).
Also, if I want to adjust the volume level of the ringer, I can't use the VOLUME button on the outside of the phone. I have to flip the phone open first. My question is, if you are going to require the phone to be open in order for those buttons to work, WHY DID YOU PUT THEM ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE PHONE TO BEGIN WITH?
I FEEL LIKE I'M TAKING CRAZY PILLS!

Samsung A670
Reviewer: dumbledore on Thu Jan 20, 2005
Samsung SCH-A670 is a cell phone for only students who want to be in touch with their family members. Like going to school and returning, informing their messages.
Its a cell phone, not for mobile freaks, but the beginners can benefit from it. It has cool features but the lack of bluetooth and infrared capabilities has made it a "think first" choice cell even for beginners. Nowadays, learners start from cell phones which are fuly loaded. My purpose is to send a message to my family members that im off from school, im lost, need directions, may be late etc etc etc.

Samsung 670: Only one good thing
Reviewer: cs141 on Thu Dec 23, 2004
Alright I've only had the A670 for a couple of days and my prior one was an old timer Kyocera, but this phone's annoying me more and more
The best thing about this phone is that you can say any name in the contact list and it recognizes it without ANY training.
That's it. After that it's all been down hill !!!
First, a minor point: This phone has no games whatsoever, not even the cheesy stuff that you can use to kill time when stuck on a train or at a boring party. But no big deal, you can always buy one (maybe that's what they want you to do).
Second, there's no easy way to go to your recent calls. You have to navigate from one menu to another. Samsung graciously gives you one programmable shortcut but limits the functions you can assign it.
Oh, and the other three shortcuts - one's for messaging (good), one's for Mobile Web (really, how many people need this), and one's for Get It Now (ditto).
Third, minor point: when activating the voice recognition feature you get a menu for what you want to do: Name Dial, Quick Dial, Today, etc...
If you select something that doesn't have anything to display, it beeps LOUDLY in you ear. So suppose you say Today and there's nothing for today... BEEEEEEP --- Aaaahhh!!! #$#$#@ phone was my reaction. I won't be selecting Today again.
Four, camera: Takes decent shots but the flash should be renamed: "Ruin Your Picture". It's not even a flash just a light that turns on and whites out a third of your shot. What a gimmick.
My Kyocera also had a nifty little feature for a contact lookup this phone lacks. Suppose you wanted to call someone name Kelly who was in your addr book. You would just press 535, and presto Kelly's name would pop-up. You could do this without going to the contacts and selecting find. And more importantly you wouldn't have to press 5-5 for K, then 3-3 for E, then 5-5-5 for L. Just 5-3-5, and it would search for the closest match. If more than one existed, you could enter more letters. This isn't perfect but it worked for me 95%.
Certainly the voice thing is excellent, but it would have been nice to have this.
Reception: It's okay. I live in a dead zone and one of the two main reasons I wanted to get a new phone was hopefully it would have better reception. (The other was to get a nice color screen.)
This phone's okay. I still only get two bars but it seems to keep the call alive longer.
I don't know, I think I'm going to switch to the LG VX7000. But I'm going to check if it's just as annoying as this one.
Good luck...

Problematic Phone
Reviewer: ludakris_tina on Tue Mar 15, 2005
I have had the samsung a670 for six months now, and i am currently using the fourth one of these. With the very first a670, my reception went down dramatically! Plus, this phone is a complete tweaker! My phone will start ringing, i'll press send and it will start timing the call as if i picked it up, but the ringer will continue to play. It then proceeds to drop the call and restart itself. Its some exorcist stuff! I've had this problem with all four phones, maybe i'm just not lucky, but this phone licks balls! The only good thing about it is the voice dial feature is actually very good! DON't get this PHONE!

i miss my old phone
Reviewer: drpepper2 on Sat Jan 14, 2006
i had the samsung a670 for about 2 months and i LOVED it. but then it started messing up i would open it and there would be a black screen so i had to keep opening my phone about 5 times. then the camera messed up.. it wouldn't take pictures. so we took it to verizon and they ordered me a new phone for free. needless to say it was one that was messed up before and they just fixed it. but i didn't no. later that day i got a phone call and it sounded like their phone was 6 miles away or they were down in a tunnel. so i took it back and they ordered me a new one and that one the battery died really fast and people couldn't hear me talk and it made me really mad! and they would keep ordering me fixed phones and i would get them and they'd be all scratched up or it wouldn't even say samsung on the face plate or verizon. so, one day my brother got a new phone and he gave me his old LG6000 and i thought i really liked it til i activated it. but it doesn't take good pictures and it doesn't have a flash. i can't recive EMS text messages and on the call list it doesn't show if i called them or they called me or if i missed the call or whatnot. so over all if i had 50$ to order me a new samsung 670 i would even though i have had so much trouble with them. by the way during all that happening my mom had the same samsung phone and she just used it for calling and she even had a case on it and one day she shut her phone and it broke it half. but if i could i would go back to samsungs in a minute. that's how bad i miss my phone.

What to do with a phone in 6 pieces?!
Reviewer: spoiledbrat67 on Sat May 13, 2006
This phone last me about 10 months before it finally died. It survived a few falls, some even feet in the air, but just today it finally died and broke into 6 pieces. Not only that, but the "exorcist" ringing (see ludakris_tina's review) and possessed turning itself on and off. It served me well at first but in the past few months its been really demented. It hardly holds a charge, the ringtones that came on the phone are very boring, and its reception greatly declined the longer I owned it. I do NOT advise the purchase of this phone. The only good thing about it is the easy-to-learn format that I taught myself to use.
