This phone is a great phone! It has everything I need on it. I've had it for about 2 weeks now, and it hasn't failed me yet. One thing I love about the U540 is the bright screen that greets you when you flip open the phone. It has updated menus from Verizon, and are easy to navigate. The camera, although takes somewhat blurry pics, has some cool features along with it. ISO, metering, white balance, multishot, night mode, and color effects make it a handy tool. The phone's calling quality is great! The added speakerphone feature is also good. The keypad is nice and big, and allows the user to dial with ease. The U540 also allows the user to customize the phone to their liking with wallpapers on the internal and external screens, a "see" who's calling you feature, along with the memory card expansion to add hundreds of photos and music. In all, the Samsung U540 was an amazing choice for the price. I love it, and plan to keep it for a very long time.

I've had this phone for a few days now and I must admit I like it a lot. I've had LG brand phones in the past but decided to try Samsung this time. It's a nice two tone light gray/black front and all black inside the flip. It's a classy looking phone, on the thinner side and sleek looking.you have to handle it and see it for yourself to appreciate it.
IMO it's the type of phone a professional person wouldn't mind being seen with.
Inside, the screen is a nice large size and very crisp and clear. Keypad buttons are wide and flat on the surface but not hard to press. More important than the looks, the phone's performance is very good. Voice quality is clear and not harsh and blaring like some other phones I've had in the past. Voice dial worked perfectly for me every time I've used it. Volume is very loud on the highest setting, so in noisy conditions it should do the job. I also like the internal antenna which means I can slip the phone into my pocket and it fits nicely.no stubby antenna poking me in the leg.
I can't comment on playing MP3s or music since I haven't had time to mess with those features. I highly recommend this phone, and if anyone else takes the plunge to buy it, let us all know what you think.

This phone takes a little time to appreciate, but after a few weeks I have to say that I like this phone a great deal. Call quality is good, and only rarely have I heard the buzz during the call that some reviews noted. I have had only one dropped call, and find that my signal strength is improved over my previous phone. My primary use for the device is as a phone, so I don't mind the mediocre camera quality. I have used the V-Cast music out of curiosity, and I find it acceptable. When traveling without my iPod, I now have some music I can listen to in my motel room. Customizing ringtones and wallpaper was easy. In short, I would recommend this phone as a solid choice to someone who did not want to spend a lot of money for a device with all the upper end toys, but still wanted a good, reliable phone that lends itself to a little fun if so desired.

As a consultant, my primary concern is to have a clean, professional-looking phone with excellent reception. I enjoy bells and whistles, but they're not a priority. I received the u540 in the mail yesterday and while I'm definitely pleased with the look/feel of the phone, I've already discovered some problems.
The feel of the phone is solid, esp for a light, slim unit. the exterior is smooth and pleasant to the touch. the keypad, however, feels flat and squeezed and i've repeatedly pushed buttons accidentally while trying to navigate. the analog clock on the front window is a classy touch, but it's hard to read and can also be switched to a digital readout. the reception so far has been very clear with several bars of antenna, even though my home is rather distant from a cell tower. I noticed a slight high pitched buzz in the background of the conversation yesterday, but not today. it has EVDO, if you want to download stuff.
i didn't buy the phone to use the music player and haven't yet tested it. since i have no plans to buy music for the phone when i have 3000 songs sitting on my laptop, I can imagine loading music via the 1gig memory card. i haven't tested that theory yet, so won't write about it here. but the phone does not have a standard sized outlet for earphones, which will require an adapter or a bluetooth headset.
The phone also has some really annoying qualities and they all probably stem from Verizon and the software loaded on the phone - it's tedious to navigate, ugly to look at, impossible to tailor to make more efficient, and leaves most of the features of the phone unchangeable.
First, the 1.3mp camera cannot zoom and only has a brightening feature. the few photos i've taken look really blurry. Also, the brightening sounds related to the camera are LOUD and cannot be turned off.
Second, it takes about 15 clicks to get anything done on the phone - want to send a text message? 8 clicks before you're at the stage of entering text!
Third, we all know that Verizon nickle-and-dimes it's customers, but it's been two years since i've had a new phone and they've become even worse. the phone comes with bare bones ring tones, most of which are geared for 16 year old high schoolers and a few ugly wallpapers (although a nice camera usually makes up for this, plan on having artsy blurry wallpapers).
Fourth, the phone isn't tri-mode, as Verizon advertizes. Unfortunately, the mobiledia specs weren't up yet when i bought the phone. I live in a large metro area, I occasionally travel into rural areas of the country to visit my parents, siblings, etc. After a whole lot of investigating, I purchased the u540 for $80 from Verizon believing that it supports analog signals as well as the usual digital CDMA signal. I had three Verizon reps confirm that analog was supported, only to find that no, the u540 does NOT support analog. It's a move in anticipation of Verizon dropping analog altogether in February of 2008.
In sum, it's a pretty decent telephone - a 6 or 7 out of 10. i'm returning it to get a tri-mode, hopefully one that i can build some shortcuts into so I can navigate more easily.
