A quality crafted handset
Reviewer: mmrajotte on Fri Dec 02, 2005
Let me start by saying that Samsung did an excellent job on this phone. This is a very solid device. The keys are well sized and spaced and easy to navigate, complimented by a crisp, colorful screen and fast GUI.
Only downside i can see is that the only option for the menu is grid style. Also the phonebook displays both name and number; no name list, but that i can live with since the response time of the keys is incredible.
The reception of the D357 rivals that of a Nokia 6010 or 6102. Audio quality I give a 9 out of 10. As for speaker phone quality, i give it a 10.
Having recently purchasing a digital camera, the lack of one on this phone doesn't phase me. That may discourage some people, but in the day and age where some employers ban camera phones, this phone will succed.
Whether or not you plan on using the Push to Talk, the Samsung D357 is a smart buy. Well built, quality handset.

Great Phone!
Reviewer: jonesbm on Tue Feb 07, 2006
I have tried pretty much every phone Cingular has to offer that is worth anything, and I must say that this phone really is my favorite. Here's some pros and cons:
PROS
-GREAT speakerphone and earpiece volume
-excellent ring tone clarity
-easy to navigate menus
-bluetooth
-fast internet (MEdia net)
-quick response from keys and consistent feel
-solid construction
-vibrate is rather strong, but not loud
-signal strength for me is great (Bowling Green, KY)
-screen resolution and brightness
-you can answer any phone call by pushing the speakerphone button on the side of the phone and it will answer in speakerphone mode without having to open the flip...VERY convenient!
-PTT is a really cool function that I'm sure is handy...but.........
CONS
-PTT.....ok, this function works great.....but I don't know many (actually any as of right now) people with it therefore I cannot use it. So if anyone on here has PTT I would be more than happy to connect with you just to try this stuff out....who knows...make a new friend in the process!
-Camera, or the lack thereof. But hey, a phone camera really doesn't do that much anyway, so really there's not much of a point in having one really. Spend the extra little bit of money and get a REAL digital camera if you are just crazy about having one.
All in all, this is really a great phone whether you use the PTT feature or not. Hope this helps you all out there!

I don't like this phone
Reviewer: pksings on Tue Dec 12, 2006
This phone is not loud enough, a quiet conversation is not possible, they can't hear you, and you can't hear them.
The headphone jack is NOT standard. A trio of wired headphones (all different models) purchased at the Cingular store cut out when inserted completely. On three different phones of the same model so it is definitely a design flaw. And Samsung officially only "supports" the one they sell, the plug of which apparently is shorter. Which is of course unusable in a noisy environment which is why I wanted one in the first place. Based on this phone, I will never buy another Samsung product of any kind.

I've had this phone a little over a week. While it's ability as a phone is terrific, with great sound and great feel in your hand, it's interface and capabilities leave much to be desired. My wife has one also, her only complaint is that she has a tendency to put her fingers on the volume rocker turning the volume off when talking.....
1. Most important item left out: No ADDRESSES, No COMPANY NAME can be stored in the phone. This is carried over to the Bluetooth card which does not have a address either. And what sense would it be to go to a meeting with this and exchange cards if all you are left with is the name, phone numbers, & email ........
2. Contact list displays both SIM and Phonebook at the same time. Small icons tell you were the contact is from. Interesting but not really needed as most people copy from the sim to the phonebook when setting up the phone.
3. NO WAY TO COPY *TO* SIM - None, nada. So the only way to enter items into SIM is MANUALLY you can not get a bluetooth object and drop it to save to the sim. You can copy FROM SIM to phonebook, but why bother since it would then show all those numbers twice.
4. Back button is totally soft key. And it changes from side to side based on application (contact, calendar, browser) and is as a result not always available to use forcing you to exit the browser to get out of the site..
5. Contact list lookup is buggy. No last name search function, all numbers and voice lookup are first name last name. A search for "RU' would get you all RUth Smith and Mark RUbin numbers. Entering RUBIN will also get you Ruth Smith (it's a partial match) but not always Rubinowitz or Rubinstein. I think that the number of items returned to the list is too small and the list needs to be sorted by the most letters matched desending..
6. Calendar function not intgrated to Contacts. No way to put in Contact info into calendar memo or task
7. No way to turn off individual Bluetooth functions. You can control your invisability, and bluetooth activation but not the indivdual services broadcast. Bluetooth security is only asking for an additional 'do you want to' question and if you want to open your file section for browsing by others.
8. Contact list is not capable of determining that a contact is updated or existing. Send the same contact again and it's in twice. No builtin sync. No software available at this time either to do sync.
9. There is a 'Turn off graphics' selection on the phone for Internet access, It doesn't work.
10. Though they have been selling the phone for weeks, Cingular's web site says that the phone is not compatible with Media Net. That many of thier 'Cool Tool's' don't work with it (some do, some don't and they all have be puchased via the phone.
11. IM can be done with a single button, but only 1 IM profile can be setup, you must decide between YAHOO, ICQ or AIM for the direct IM function from Cingular which can auto logon and active all the time. You can do the others from the Internet Messaging Ctr. I don't understand why they don't store a IM profile for each service and allow you to either choose the service or run all of them together like a PC's Trillian or other IM applications that connect to multiple IM services.
12. Video playback requires that Bluetooth be off. Plays back mpeg4 video nicely. Since it's most likely that Bluetooth was how you got that video in the first place....since Cingular says that it's not video capable at Media Net......
I strongly suggest the Unlimited Web Access for $19/mo for this phone, it's the only way to overcome its short comings but you have to keep connected to the web....
