For the Record:
Samsung SGH-E316 (originally AT&T Wireless, now Cingular) is homologous to E315 (T-Mobile) and E317 (Cingular) in the United States and in Europe to the SGH-E300 and E310.
Abstract: If you can still buy this model (since AT&T Wireless was bought out by Cingular, this model is no longer in active production, only in overstock in inventories), it's definitely one to be considered.
Physical Attributes:
The length of the phone is similar to those of "normal sized" Samsung clamshell phones. The phone could be considered on the slightly thick sized. The upper flap is a little thick, probably to compensate and add space for the VGA camera and the external color LCD. The charger/data port is still covered with a silver painted "cheap" rubber cover (that you can easily break or misplace it). This phone uses a different type of microphone jack, it uses a squarish shaped jack. The jack port is covered by a sliding plastic cover, rather than a rubber cover.
Performance:
Voice: Decent/Great (due to signal strength fluctuations, even under a full 6 bar) voice quality in AT&T's GSM 850/1900 area in New York City. A very slight hissing background noise can be heard, but it's fairly subtle.
Data: I'm on a budget, didn't try out WAP yet. This phone has GPRS support, so I imagine it should achieve at least dialup speeds, if not higher via GPRS WAP.
Battery: Low Battery Warning Alert comes on when there's about 57% power remaining (*#0228# to access battery strength). Battery power tends to drain faster when using the built in camera function or playing games.
Camera: Decent. Brightness/Mirror image, etc. controls are there.
Firmware and Niceties:
As of the menu: Page or Film Style, take your pick.
Games? The "standard 4" of Bubblesmile, Fun2Link, Ultimate Golf Challenge and MobileChess
Ringtones? 25 ringtones, most of it seems to be based on "classical" music.
Very similar to countless other Samsung firmwares (except for the "newer" ones)
