Samsung P207

Reviewer: mr_meep on Wed Apr 27, 2005

I just got this phone (I received it on the 25th) and I already like it.

Initial Pros:
-Sleek look and styling-feels great in the hands. The body is lacquer-like, smooth plastic that has a wonderful "wet" look. It's almost like liquid.
-Lightweight, but not "cheap" feeling
-Gorgeous color screens on the inside AND outside
-Excellent graphics and built-in games (you get 4 fun ones)
-EDGE access
-Awesome price! (USD $79.99 online from Cingular.com only-you will NOT find this phone in any brick-and-mortar store!)
-Pretty large memory for photos and video clips...the phone seems to have about 13 MB total memory space
-Polyphonic ringtones and mp3 ringtone capability
-Picture Caller ID on outer screen PLUS you can assign ringtones to each caller
-Can store 3 numbers plus an e-mail address. The SIM stores 250 numbers, the phone can store 1000 numbers and e-mail addresses
-T9 predictive text
-Voice command capability to dictate messages and use function (say "check battery" or "check status" and a female voice reads them out loud to you...MEGA COOL)
-One-touch manner mode (silent mode with vibration)
-7 different status light colors that you can choose from and then it cycles through them all when the phone rings
-Battery charges relatively quickly...about 3 hours and change for a fully empty to fully charged battery using the provided travel charger

Initial Cons:
-No Bluetooth (a minus for some people, but not me)
-Digital camera not a megapixel-class*
-Text and symbol input is a pain (this is a problem on al phones, it seems)
-Manual is too basic. Nothing is said about the data connect or sync capabilities
-The data kit with connecting cable, software and manual is sold separately at Samsung.com...and it's about 75 bucks!
-Charger cable and earpiece jack are proprietary Samsung...meaning you really have to buy them from Samsung. That's a nasty little trick, in my opinion. Right now, I have no custom case, car charger or hands-free earpiece for my phone so I can't use it while driving
-Like ALL Samsung phones I've seen, the side up and down keys adjust the KEY volume, not the RING TONE volume...urgh.
-No expansion slot for memory access
-Unlike my old Motorola T720, this phone doesn't let you know how much data you transferred when you quit the MediaNET browser...you have to go into the menu and check. If you're not careful, you can rack up a huge data bill
-Lacquer-type slick finish shows every fingerprint. If you commit a crime and leave your P207 behind, the forensics guys won't even have to work with dust. You can clearly see every fingerprint in detail on this finish. It begs for a nice form-fitting case to keep it clean
-Poor battery life if you are a heavy multimedia, game or internet user. I charge mine every day because this phone is so cool that I cannot put it down
-This is a Cingular issue, but I don't see a huge speed increase in message sending or MediaNET browsing with the EDGE enabled...

THINGS I WANT TO SEE HAPPEN:

-A firmware update that makes the side keys control ringtone volume
-A firmware update that shows data volume when exiting browser mode
-An extended battery that offers at least twice as much juice
-Special plastic covers for the screens and camera lenses so they don't get scratched

About The Voice Recognition:
-You MUST calibrate it first by reading a list of words into the phone in your normal voice
-Once calibrated, you just push a button, then hold the side button and start speaking
-You MUST pause between each word, but once you're used to it, you can make text messages about 5 times faster than typing them out, even with T9 predictive text input
-You can tell the phone what to do (i.e.-'Call home' or 'Send text Frank') and it responds
-The software makes corrections after you're done speaking, so if you speak a sentence and it gets a word wrong, when you release the button, it fixes it. It has a pretty big vocabulary (think of it like giving dictation to a third or fourth grader) and you can go back to words it missed and choose the right one from a list or just type it in yourself. Truthfully, I send basic messages all the time now and I don't type anything. I just speak, maybe change one or two words using the list and then send it off

All in all, I'd rate this phone a 6.5 out of 10 compared to others and a 9 out of 10 when comparing price to value. You get a camera, video, EDGE, gorgeous color, mp3 ringtones (with the data kit) and plenty of bells and whistles to keep you occupied and happy. If you're like me and don't care about Bluetooth and megapixel camera phones, THIS is the phone for you! If you're dying for a nice camera and a phone, spend the money on this one and take the 300 bucks more you would have spent on the s710a and buy a nice 3 MP digital camera that fits in your pocket. The voice command capability looks like a gimmick and it might be, but once you're used to it, you can't stand to type things out on tiny keypads anymore

This phone is great! I will edit this review as I use the phone more. I just wanted to get something out there to help the people who have seen this phone and were looking for more detailed info on it...reviews for this phone being scarce.

*Even 1.3 MP cameras on phones are grainy and poor because of the inherent drawbacks to the way the chips work. Only newly-developed software that has yet to be implemented can help cell cameras acheive anything near a dedicated camera unit.

Samsung P207

Reviewer: Gagnatron5000 on Thu Jun 01, 2006

This phone is a great phone for me to start on. It was my first phone, and it got me into the world of cellular phoning.

the good

-while driving, I don't need to look at the phone itself, so much as just yelling at it over the engine noise of my car. In other words, the voice recognition is very nice for when you need your hands for other things.
-the pictures and the display are both pretty clear, especially if you have a steady hand.
-the controls are easy to figure out.
-i enjoy the sleekness, light weight, and small size of the phone. it slips easily into my pocket.
-the antenna was unnessesary, as i found out after i accidentally snapped it off. get rid of yours to save some space. it's just a purely aesthetic feature.
-the word recognition while typing in text is really helpful as well.
-the keypad is comfortable and doesn't hurt my nail on my right thumb, which is kind of messed up. my brother's phone hurts my thumb. i didn't like it.
-fast recharge time.

the bad.

-no bluetooth. this gets annoying when i want to customize it, and need to buy a cable.
-the cable costs 80 bucks. no pictures on my pc either. it'd be cheaper to text them to my brother and have him put them on his computer.
-voice recognition really doesn't work in quiet places, but that's a given. it still needs some kinks worked out of it.
-still no bluetooth.
-no speakerphone, which is annoying for trying to show your friends movies.
-poor battery life.
-camera's shutter sound. it's quite evident this is a safety device for those crazy kids in japan who take panty shots of girls sitting across from them at a diner booth. we don't do that here. we don't need to be notified of when we're taking pictures because it's annoying enough that we have our cell phone out, let alone making camera noises with it.

and the ugly

-fingerprints everywhere.
-would have liked the white version.

Okay phone, but not for me

Reviewer: tp2005 on Mon Apr 17, 2006

I got my Samsung P207 phone in late 2005. It's a decent phone, but the novelty wore out fairly quickly. Some of the pros are:

-Lightweight and small.
-The sleak feel of the phone. Very easy on the hands
-Decent camera and video for a cell phone
-GREAT quailty on the internal and external screens
-The voice-recognition feature
-Good games that came with it
-Good ring tone quality
-Battery charges pretty quickly

Cons:
-Even though the lacquer-like material is an eye-catcher and feels nice to hold, under most light, EVER LITTLE finger print will be shown. Not a huge deal to me, I just wipe it down with my shirt or a napkin and it comes right off, but some people might prefer to get a case for it
-Although the camera is decent quality, what by far is my biggest annoyance on this phone is the fact that the shutter sound can't be turned off. Most times when you take pictures, you want to take them on the slide where you won't be recognized, well, that ain't gonna happen when this phone. The shutter sound is loud and clear and no matter how low the sound on the phone is, or even if it's on vibrate, the shutter sound will go off. This one thing alone makes me regreat upgrading this phone.
-I was surprised to see there was no bluetooth technology, considering that this model isn't particularly old. Although I'm not a huge bluetooth person, that was somewhat disappointing
-Probably the second-biggest disappointment was the fact that there was no speaker phone. Phones that are over a year older than this phone have that feature, so I don't know whay Samsung passed on adding this feature.
-If you love to play games or use the media net, then you need not buy this phone, as when it comes to battery life, this phone is very poor. Which probably explains how it can be charged so fast.
-Instead of using the standard headset jack, they use a custom one which requires you to come out of pocket to pay for that special jack.
-I'm sure I still haven't figured out everything this phone has to offer, which can be contributed to the fact that the manual only has basic info and doesn't go very in-depth.

The voice-recognition feature:

This is a great concept and cool feature, but the novelty of it wears down really fast. It needs to be developed a bit more to become more effective. You might find yourself typing on the extra small buttons after a while. It makes me feel somewhat dimwitted when I have to space out my words when I talk so the phone can get the words right. lol But it does do a pretty decent job of interpretting what you say as long as the room is silent. But like I said, more than likely people will get tired of this feature pretty quickly.

The phone is fine for people who don't get worked up on features and like a phone that looks nice. But for people who are tech-heads like me when it comes to phones, the novelty of the phone will wear off quickly due to the lack of features. I'd personally give this phone a 6 out of 10.

Excellent Phone!

Reviewer: djjohn919 on Sat Jan 28, 2006

Theres been a lot said about this phone, but let me say this. This phone is a gorgeous phone. The one review I read, the guy said he couldnt put it down. I find myself picking it up for no reason also. Lets start with the screens. They are fabulously clear, probably one of the best. The sound is great, it doesnt sound cheap or like plastic. I can really go on about the pros of this phone so let me give what I think is a con. To me there really is only one. The wallpapers that you download will never fit the entire screen. If you buy the wallpapers from cingular they will fit because they are a dm file, but do you really want to spend all that money for wallpapers when you can use a usb cable and software or a wap browser. I called samsung and they said thats the way the phone was designed. Its really a shame since the screen is so brilliant. It bothered me at first but I got over it. It really is an awesome phone. Im glad I bought mine.. icon_biggrin.gif

The best phone out there!

Reviewer: Nychol on Tue Aug 23, 2005

I have had this phone about a week and I love it. It truly is the best phone out there in my opinion. I had an LG L1400i for about a week before this one and the Samsung continually out performs it. The picture quality is really good for a phone. The Voice-to-Text is really great... makes texting sooo much easier. Granted it takes a little patience to set up and is not always right but the more you work with it the better it gets. The ringtones are loud (even the downloads). One thing I do not like it that it does not ring and vibrate at the same time. Minor con. Another minor con is that you can not change the outside LCD wallpaper. There is also no speakerphone. Do not let these minor cons keep you from buying this phone. If you get the chance you should definately get it. It is absolutely wonderful.
