Bright and clear
Reviewer: tpcallanan on Tue Mar 09, 2004
First Impressions were good. This phone is nice looking, easy to hold and maneuver. Colors are bright and clear. While the phone is not at all bad per say, it lacks features that you may expect or may already be used to. For example, there is no outside display while the phone is closed. You must open to see the clock and to identify the caller. Second, and in my opinion most importantly, the ringtones are anything but standard. Professionals in the business world or most adults will feel silly when their phone rings out load in public with crazy sounds and tunes. Also, it will not ring and vibrate simultaneously, it will vibrate 3 times, then ring. Finally, the phone does not automatically recognize when the headset is plugged in. You will find that the phone doesn't ring through the headset or allow you to customize a setting specifically for the headset feature . If the phone is set to vibrate, you will hear nothing in the earpiece.

Samsung SGH-X426 Failure
Reviewer: will0543 on Tue Aug 03, 2004
In less than a year, the plastic holding the antenna has broken (inside the case, not outside as a result of damage). In a discussion with Samsung repair people (after a 40 min wait on hold), I was told it wasn't their fault and I should pay for the repair. This diagnosis was made without seeing the phone, mind you, but it probably doesn't matter since I was also informed that the only thing covered by the warranty is the circuit board. So it appears the nice looks and features are not backed up by good reliability design, and certainly not backed up by the "Limited Warranty" as outlined in the user guide. I can't buck the big company, but I can spread the word. Buy Samsung at your own risk.

Samsung X426
Reviewer: azntg on Wed Aug 17, 2005
Way overdue, but Keeping with my E316 reviewing style....
For the Record:
Samsung SGH-X426 (originally AT&T Wireless, now Cingular) is homologous to X427 (Cingular) and X450 (Europe).
Abstract: If you can still buy this model (since AT&T Wireless was bought out by Cingular, this model is no longer in active production, only in overstock in inventories), you should consider the X427M instead.
Physical Attributes:
The length of the phone is similar to those of "normal sized" Samsung clamshell phones. The phone could be considered thin for a clamshell (not Motorola RAZR style, but still relatively thin). The charger/data port is still covered with a "cheap" rubber cover (that you can easily break or misplace it). This phone uses a round headset jack and I managed to get optimal performance only with the original OEM headset.
Performance:
Voice: Decent/Great (due to signal strength fluctuations, even under a full 6 bar) voice quality in AT&T's GSM 850/1900 area in New York City. A very slight hissing background noise can be heard, but it's fairly subtle.
Data: I'm on a budget, didn't try out WAP yet. This phone has GPRS support, so I imagine it should achieve at least dialup speeds, if not higher via GPRS WAP.
Battery: Low Battery Warning Alert comes on when there's about 57% power remaining (*#0228# to access battery strength). Battery power tends to drain faster when using the ringer rather excessively or playing games.
Firmware and Niceties:
As of the menu: Page or Film Style, take your pick.
Games? The "standard 3" Java games of Bubblesmile, Fun2Link and MobileChess. Also two firmware based games: XFighter and Spacewar.
Ringtones? 30 ringtones, characteristic of early "Samsung Agere chipset based" phones... some of them classical, some just plain weird, etc. 40 Poly.
Very similar to countless other Samsung firmwares (except for the "newer" ones)
Also, this phone has an inherent BUG! At random, if you try to dial someone, you can see the call sending screen and it basically freezes like that. Sometimes though the screen freezes, the call gets through, other times, it doesn't. After you press "end" or close the flip, the problem is still there. The only solution to this problem is to take the battery off and restart. Also, after playing games, the phone sometimes "resets" by itself. Kinda buggy, for an otherwise great phone.

Impressive
Reviewer: LGX88 on Fri Nov 24, 2006
My friend Stephanie had this phone a looong time ago. It lasted her a long time. (which says a lot!) She was destructive with her phones. As I have inherited from her. She left it out in the rain, it went though the washer AND dryer, dropped in the tub, and probably a lot more i don't even know about.
About 5 years later i buy this phone off eBay. My friend Tove would call someone on it, then though it into my lawn. (She claimed it was so light, she couldn't resist throwing it.) Soon after I switched to Verizon Wireless. If i could have, i would have keep the phone. So, i gave it to my dad. He forgot it in his pants, and it went though the washing machine. I expected it to have short circuited and everything. It was probably on until it was submerged in water. (He's old and doesn't exactly keep up with style. He doesn't know how to turn the thing off). The next day, ALAS! It turns on. Everything works fine! I give it a 8.5/10
Pros: Small, VERY light, cheep inexpensive phone, calls are clear, great signal, very customizable, somewhat water-prof , ring tones are pretty cool sounding, ring tones are LOUD, bright and clear screen, side keys are silent (that comes in handy )
Cons: Not too many cool and advanced features, when the phone is in my pocket the ring tones are a lot quieter until you pull it out (I had it in a tight pocket so i was SURE to feel it vibrate), the phone doesn't vibrate AND ring at the SAME time (vibrates half the time then rings the rest), side keys control key volume (only when opened)
