Here's my 2 cents on the new Samsung X497 (clamshell) cell phone:
PROS:
-small and quite easy to operate with one hand.
-unique flat antenna that screams "i am different!"
-compact, I can hardly feel it in my pocket.
-big and bright main display...very colorful!
-bright and informative external display.
-big comfortable buttons...you will never accidentally press 2 when you meant 3.
-easy to navigate.
-good battery life.
-nice assortment of pre-loaded ring tones and decent choices of wallpapers
-uses SIM card!
-nice external volume adjuster that gives you silent, vibrate, and all the usual ringtone volumes.
-clear calls, i haven't had any dropped calls yet for 2 weeks.
-clear, convenient, and loud speaker phone.
-short learning curve.
CONS:
-The external volume adjuster can be accidentally pressed too easily.
-SLOW INTERNET!
-not that customizable.
-a pure basic phone.
-no camera
-external display isn't color, just black and white (which is really not a big deal for me)
-the antenna could have been eliminated
-the swing covers for the charger and the headphones are a little flimsy.
-only comes in one color:silver
-the volume of the earpiece could be louder.
CONCLUSION:
I LOVE THIS PHONE! it's simple and pretty to look at. Nice speaker phone and worth every penny. But keep in mind that this is just a basic clamshell phone, nothing fancy! But perfect for people who doesn't need the best quality phone with all the glamour (mp3, camera, etc...), like ME! On top of that, it boasts a bright and colorful main LCD screen. BOTTOM LINE: BUY THIS PHONE IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR VALUE AND QUALITY!
FINAL SCORE: 9/10
RECOMMENDED?: definately!!!

Overall I like the phone. It's a B+ in my book.
Here are my thoughts:
Things I like:
>attractive on the outside.
>pretty big display on inside.
>clear display on outside
>good battery life
>bright! with good colors
Things I don't like:
>Display on main screen allows you to only pick Menu or IM (instead of Menu and Contacts, or something more helpful than IM.
>Menu items are all on one screen, and you can't make each section have it's own page.
>Games & applications (calendar, organizer...)are in the same icon..kind of weird.
>IM has it's own icon in the Menus section, useless!
>Cannot customize the up/down/left/right buttons on key pad. They are already programed - up text message, down contacts, left my media, right IM.
So, conclusions:
PERFECT for people in the IM 24-7 club.
NOT PERFECT for people who are big into customization.

I just got this phone today and so far I'm quite pleased. My dad got a Nokia and my mom/bro both got LG's, and I must say this phone seems the best of them all.
The overall quality of the phone is teriffic. It seems very sturdy, much more than the LG. The buttons have a great click to them. Sometimes I here a crackle sound(almost like papers under the clear button) but it's yet to mess up so it's probably just getting worn in.
Volume is plenty loud. Rings sound great too. I really want to use MP3s(which it cam, but it's hard to get them on the phone) but the mini sounds are much better than other phones I've used. Calls are great too.
Reception seems quite normal for this phone. No better than my old one...
Screens are great. The internal screen is so vivid! It's amazing for a phone, much better than my old PDA was. External screen...eh, it's ok. It's nice but can be hard to see without the light(say if you want to check the time)
Battery life seems good. I've not had a good time to really test it, but so far it's held up fine. Do some reasearch, and you'll find out it's got one of the most powerful batteries(1000mah) Not bad...
One final note - msd1187 couldn't be more wrong when it comes it pictures on the phone. If you take just a few minutes to read up on the topic, Samsung CLEARLY states photos should be no larger than 128x128. If you use this size, the only bars you get are from the menu and such. Nothing on the sides.

I have to agree with the other reviews. I had a Sony/Ericsson Z500A die (stopped reading SIM cards) and had to buy a new phone ASAP. This was the least expensive phone, but it turned out to be one I really like.
Most everyone has mentioned the pros/cons they found, which I pretty much agree with. I like the bright screen, the size... the calls have been pretty clear and it seems to have slightly better pickup than my old phone.
The only complains I have are: the keypad is a bit small, the softkeys are set to "menu" and "IM" (wish I could change that one), and the cover for the power charger is very flimsy.
In general, I highly recommend this phone.

Hi,
This Phone is a great phone to use for most people. It has what I consider to be decent games, relatively fast instant messaging programs, and everything that a cell phone needs. It is relatively stylish on the outside and has many nice features. It is a bit hard to understand for someone on the more inexperienced side, but it is an all-around good phone. One problem is that I often bump the volume controls when holding it. Also, there is no way to light up the external display withought opening the phone. Other than that, I found this phone very satisfactory.
