TM 150 Review

Reviewer: robodoc9301 on Wed Feb 23, 2005

I have been using my TM 150 for about a week and it is fully loaded with features. The 1.1 mega pixel camera is pretty sweet for a cell phone, it is by far the best quality picture that I have seen in the cell phone/hand held equipment that I have had. The picture quality is superior by far to my wife's Nokia 3660's dinky little fuzzy pictures. Overall quality seems pretty good; however it is a bit larger than the Samsung e315 that it is replacing. Video is pretty nice and again too many features to learn in a week. The software is decent, but you really have to explore to find many of the phones features, so plan on running the battery down the first day or two while you figure it out. Battery life is good, much better when you turn of the keypad tones. NO BLUETOOTH, totally bummer, wire<less? It feels almost crude that a phone with this many options has to have a wire connected to your ear bud (not cool!) Have not tried the cable interface yet, SD card is cool for extra memory. The setup is kind of limited you can't view pictures unless they were taken with the phone (dumb). Additionally if you store pictures on the SD card instead of the phones memory you lost some of the features, like using the picture for caller ID.
So far I like it, jury is still out of durability, I work in a auto plant so it will be tested! Robodoc icon_surprised.gif icon_w00t.gif

Sharp TM150

Reviewer: dsgnz on Tue Mar 15, 2005

We recently bought this phone as a gift for our teenage son. I have to admit that it does have a lot of features and seems to be a pretty slick phone but my biggest complaint is its inability to download and install games or applications.

My wife and I use the Nokia 3650 and it is a phenominal phone. We have become used to the ability to do just about anything we want with our phones from using the 3650. I have installed numerous games of Gameboy quality and such applications as an MP3 player, a movie viewer (to upload and watch DVDs), GPS navigation, a spy camera (where you can have the phone take a picture when it senses movement and then call you when the picture is taken or send the picture to another phone etc.), actual songs to use as ringtones, and so much more.

When we learned that the Sharp had a memory card and were told that we could install games and applications on it as well I was sold. When I sat down to start installing such stuff I found that it is not possible and upon searching found dozens of articles and forums that confirm this.

I tried to download a few for myself and got the message that the phone was not capable of downloading such stuff and the download was automatically terminated. I don't know if it is possible to upload such apps and games from your PC to the phone with a serial cable but from what I have read this is a no go as well.

As a phone it is clear and works great and the installed features are nice. I was excited about the megapixel camera but it is slow and the pictures aren't that great but they are better than other vga cameras. I am just very upset that the salesperson at T-Mobile duped me into purchasing it. They continued to tell me over and over about the pre-installed games (of which there are none, just a folder) and the ease of adding more apps and games. If you are looking for a phone that is adaptable this isn't it. As I said I have become used to finding an application for anything I need on the 3650 and it is hard to change back. For the price there are better phones and more and more are coming with better cameras.

I will be returning this phone.

Awsome phone!

Reviewer: BlackRoseBud on Wed Mar 16, 2005

Awesome phone! I recommend it to anyone looking for a camera phone. I was sent a Motorola V220 from Cingular wireless and hated it!! I went to T-Mobile and they sent me the Sharp TM150 free! It's is not only the best phone I've ever owned, but it has the best quality camera on a phone that I've ever seen. You can also record short videos with it. I think 95KB each; the length really depends on the quality. It doesn't come with any preinstalled games and T-Mobile doesn't offer any through t-zones, however java games and applications can easily be downloaded free from www.3gforfree.com. Very Durable! I was involved in a car accident while my phone was in my hand. The airbag knocked me out and I had a concussion, but the phone was still like new even when the car was totaled. The battery life is not great, but this isn't a surprise since I use the video recorder on it like everyday. I read where the battery life is increased if you disable the key tones and found it to be true. It can't play MP3s. It can play short clips of an actually song or the entire midi of a song, but can't play the actual song. The motorolas can, so if MP3s are more important then camera quality then perhaps this phone isn't for you (If you’re going to go w/ a Motorola, choose one in the V300s and above.). T-mobile is the only provider that offers this phone, so if you'd rather have Sprint, god forbid Cingular, or some other clearly inferior cell phone carrier then this phone is not for you. It's not a small and cheap looking phone like all the other new models out there, I've had many people ask me how much the phone was and are shocked when I say it was free. Also, for those who like small phones then the TM150 isn't for you. I personally don't like small phones, I want something I can press the buttons on, see the screen, and won’t accidentally crush. The screen is an awesome size! It doesn't have speaker phone, which is the most disappointing part of the phone. I can deal without MP3s and battery life, but I defiantly miss speaker phone. I almost forgot, it has a "change view finder" feature for self portraits, and control on the side of the screen to compensate for close-ups. Have it up for normal pictures and down for close-ups. If your wanting to try the phone, but aren't sure just sign up for the trial through t-mobile. You get 30 days to send it back if you don't like it. Trust me, you'll fall in love.

Making your own wallpaper for the Sharp TM-150

Reviewer: wraith0078 on Tue Apr 12, 2005

Okay. I just got this phone myself.

After reading the reviews on this site, I decided to start messing with it and see what I could manage to do.

I've figured out how to transfer pictures from the computer onto the phone and use them as wallpaper. I'll see if I can explain...

You will need a card reader to access the card with your computer.

On the memory card there is a folder called PICTURES. This is where you will want to save your JPG file that you intend to use as wallpaper.

There is another folder in there called .icons with a subfolder of PICTURES, this is where the thumbnail information for the picture is kept.

Each picture in the PICTURES folder (filename.jpg) has a corresponding filename in the .icons\PICTURES folder (filename_jpg.icn).

Copy the file you want to use to your \PICTURES folder on the memory card. (ex: picture.jpg)
Next, go into the .icons\PICTURES folders and copy then paste one of the icn files that are already in there, so that you will end up with a filename copy of whatever_jpg.icn. Rename the .icn file to be the same as the picture file you want to use. The example I used above, picture.jpg, would have to have a corresponding .icn file named picture_jpg.icn.

Put the memory card back in the phone.

Now, when you open up the picture directory with the phone, you should see two identical thumbnails. One with the filename of the original file you copied the .icn from and another with the filename picture.jpg. Open the one for picture.jpg and under the options selection, rename it. Once you rename the file, it will rename the thumbnail file as well, and the thumbnail will show the correct picture instead of the original you've copied it from.

Hope these were easy enough to understand. I've never been very good at writing directions.

I'm working on converting mp3 files for ringtones now. Figured out what needs to happen, just gotta find the software to do it. icon_biggrin.gif

Awsome

Reviewer: Berserk_Fury on Wed Mar 23, 2005

I got this phone about a week ago, and I have to say that this phone is awsome. Here is a list of pros and cons:

cons:
1. ABSOLUTELY NO GAMES, that totally stinks
2. no wireless conections to the computer or other stuff at all icon_sad.gif
3. Tzones don't give you games for it
4. has a speaker, but it stinks icon_cry.gif , it can't be used as a speakerphone, or to play real tones (it could play music that you record through the microphone, but it is very quiet and bad quality)
5. Unless you don't plan to use the camera ot internet or stuff like that (but whats the fun in that) the battery dies very fast (I was able to kill it 2 times in the first 2 days icon_devil.gif )

pros:
1. The only thing you can say about the camera is: WOW. Unless you don't know how to use it, the quality is as good as it could get on a digital camera. Sometimes it may look that the picture is blurry because you moved your arm while taking it, but the phone adjusts it so it can be clear.
2. Can record short videos which are very good quality as well
3. The camera has 2 lenses - close picture and far picture
4. very solid phone
5. if you use 3gforfree.com, all the games work perfectly
6. has a full color external screen which you can use to take pictures of yourself (I haven't figured out how to save them through that screen because when it is on, the main screen is off)
7. "space age" design
8. buttons are very clear
9. I just can't stop talking about the camera icon_biggrin.gif , I don't think it is possible to get a camera with better picture qulity.

Well, this is all I could think of right now, I would recomend this phone to anyone, who likes camera phones. I love this phone! icon_wub.gif

Nice phone with 2 major problems

Reviewer: TheRomero on Wed Mar 16, 2005

As the first review reveals, this phone cannot install any additional software on it. Also, if you text message a lot, you cannot add new words to the dictionary. And if you're used to text messaging at a fairly brisk speed, forget it - you have to wait about 1/2 second between button presses per letter.

Other than those problems (which are big ones to me), this phone is excellent. It has the best LCD screen I've ever seen and I see a lot of phones as I develop software for cell phones.

I'm back to using my N-Gage. The only thing it's missing is a camera. But we'll see what Nokia has up their sleeve at E3 2005 for the next N-Gage!

Sharp TM150

Reviewer: Sexzesweet on Thu Mar 31, 2005

icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif I just got this phone and I love it ... It is loaded with features and I have not figured out all of them yet. but after reading other reviews on this board and other message boards I was concerned that I would not be able to hear on the phone. I just made my first few calls and I could hear better on this phone then any phone I have ever had. My first call was to my mother who asked me where I was calling from because she could actually hear me , she has a hard time hearing me on my samsong( that I thought I could hear great on) so that was definitely a plus. I won't have to repeat myself over and over as I normally do when on my samsong. I have had sanyo , samsung and nokia and Motorola and last but least kyocera in the past. This is definitley going to be my fav so far.
It does not come with games but I usually do not play games so that is no biggy for me . I took my first pic and it turned out great. the screen color is awesome!! better then any phone I have ever had . I think the phone is sexy. The colors are definitely girly and the main reason I picked this phone. The phone is a little bigger then what I am used to but not to big that it makes you uncomfortable. I wouldn't suggest putting in your jeans pocket if your pants are a little snug, but it fits great in the cell phone pocket on the side of my purse. It came with a lot better wallpapers then my samsong. My biggest gripe is what others have also mentioned on other sharp tm150 review boards that you cannot hear the ringer. They are right it is very hard to hear. And the only other problem I had was when I first opened the phone and was trying to figure out the menu and how to use it I accidentally called 911 twice:( I am still trying to figure out how to use the menu correctly. It seems to be more confusing then my past phones.
I made this review mostly to let people know that you can hear on the phone. I read several other places where people were complaining that they could not hear, I do not have the best hearing in the world and my ears are very sensitive, so I was really worried about some of the reviews I read ,so it was a relief to actually get the phone this morning and find out that I can hear great on it icon_smile.gif I really hope if you are checking into this phone and you read the reviews on not being able to hear out of the earpiece you do not let that sway you on getting it. The phone is perfect for me, but I know for some it is missing features like the games and bluetooth tech but those are things I don't need.

Sharp TM150

Reviewer: Col.Sanders on Mon Mar 21, 2005

I recently got this phone myself. And I have to admit, it is chock full of features. But as stated before, there are some downsides to this phone. I have previously owned Motorola and Nokia phones and have loved that their ringers were loud enough to be heard 3 rooms away. However, the Sharp TM150's tones are barely audible in the same room with the tv running. I had to download ringtones recorded at high levels in order to get more audible tones. The no games feature sucked as well. I loved the Nokia games, learned to live with the crappy ones in the Motorola, but no games at all I cannot accept. I am seriously reconsidering the purchase of this phone.
Its saving grace though is the camera and video recorder. I have taken great pics of my family and stored them in the memory card that comes with the phone. The pictures are very clear and althought the editor could use some work, its not too bad. However, even this has its bad side. Its nonacceptance of pictures not taken with the camera is a big downer as I have lots of funny pics I wanted to upload to the phone.
Haven't decided if I am keeping it or not. Still have a week left to decide.

TM150 sucks

Reviewer: thisphonesucks on Sat Apr 15, 2006

So I got my Sharp on March 18 of last year. Fell in love with it as soon as I saw it! Paid $240.00 for it! Loved it, at first! After a while it started to just cut off, sometimes I would call people and it would say it was calling, but never would connect! Called T-Mobile tech support they werent very helpful, but since it was only happening on occasion I really didnt stress to much over it!! Well so Im at work yesterday, I get my phone to check and see if anyone has called, you know the normal stuff, and it shuts off. Well I just thought it was doing its normal thing so I went to cut it back on, only this time my phone wouldnt cut back on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the third power push Im in tears!!!!!!!!! I get home, put it on the charger, nothing!!!! So then I decide to call T-Mobile tech support. They were worse than before! Only this time they proceeded to tell me that my manufacturers warranty ended on, you guessed it March 18!!! Well today is April 15!!!! The first time I called tech support mentioned nothing about fixing my problem, or anything about a warranty!!! So in conclusion I have learned that T-mobile is a horrible company to do bussiness with, and that the TM150 sucks!!! isnt it ironic that just after warranty the product simply just shuts off!!
