Decent phone, but...
Reviewer: peryus88 on Fri Feb 24, 2006
I just received this phone recently for free from getting a new activation with Cingular. I guess they are trying to get rid of this phone because it is depreciating fast. And despite the numerous negative reviews, I wanted to try this phone out. After all, Siemens is my 3rd option behind Nokia and Sony Ericsson when getting a new phone. Anyway, here is my review:
Body: The build feels very sturdy; no loose parts that seem will break off with every day use. And it looks good as well. But that’s as far as I can go. With the exception of the back, the phone is overrun with too many plastic parts. Just as one of the reviewers said, “plastic-y”. Even the cover for inserting the supplied RS-MMC card feels so cheap that if mishandled by accident, it will break off. However it is refreshing having a bar-style phone with a port for inserting the memory instead of taking off the back cover and battery. Using the keypad for dialing phone numbers is adequate, because you can feel if you actually pressed the numbers. But it becomes a bit annoying when text messaging or typing in information onto the phone because of the size and feel of the keypad.
Screen: The screen is large. That is all I can say good about it. Images displayed seem a bit washed out compared to other phones with similar display dimensions. The colors are not vibrant and crisp; they are more bland and boring.
Camera: Having a camera is always a plus for when you need to take pictures of someone or something. It boasts a 1.3 MP. However, the pictures it takes seem a bit grainy compared to other phones with 1.3MP. The video is player is adequate, but it’s choppy and not that fluid. It would have been nice if there was a flash included with the camera for that this phone is supposed to be “high-end”.
Phone: The great thing about this phone is the reception. I’m really impressed with it. Speaker phone is loud and conversations on it are distinguishable. I’m pretty much neutral about the interface. If you are used to using Windows Mobile menus, or any smart phone menus for that matter, then it is a welcome for you. However, if you are reliant on having an interface to that of Nokia and Sony Ericsson, then the learning curve is a greater (because you will get confused…there were times when I was saying to myself ‘WTF’). It would’ve been nice if voice dialing was included
Overall this phone is decent. This phone is geared for business professionals when it first came out in the market. That’s the reason I didn’t care about the phone not having the ability to play MP3’s. If you wanted a MP3 player, get a SE W800 or Motorola ROKR. What made me lean towards this phone was because it resembled my old SE T637, which was one of my favorites. It had the look of the T637, and a FEW of the features of the S710a that I currently have. And just like much of the Nokia & Sony Ericsson phones, the design of the S66 is simple yet bold. I would have liked to keep this phone. However, my experience with this phone was short-lived. There were too much bugs on the phone that I had. I check on my email often, so when I would access the internet, the phone would constantly freeze up when trying to load a page. I would be forced to turn off the phone and take out the battery. Also, I noticed the phone shut itself off on me sometimes when the RS-MMC card was inserted. Support on the Siemens website isn’t that great, because it is mostly geared to the S65, the European version. I would’ve done the flash firmware to try and get the bugs out, but like I said, it’s only for the S65. So, I’m returning it to Cingular. But, instead of getting the same phone (and maybe have to deal with the same…or more…issues); I opted to get the SE Z520a.
On a personal note, I think that comparing this phone to the SE S710a is pretty disrespectful. The S710a does “swivels” over the S66. If anyone who has ever owned one knows, the pictures displayed on the S710a are: crisp, clear, and vibrant. Using the camera/video feature out performs the S66 any given day. And even the interfaces between the two phones are different. The S710a, I only read the manual for only 6-10 minutes. The S66, I had to keep going back to manual. This is not the best non-smartphone in the market and just seems to be an over-glorified SE T637. Don’t get me wrong, I like Siemens. It just seems that they tried to cram a lot of things into decent-sized bar phone. And I thought my Nokia 6230 had bugs.

Siemens S66
Reviewer: 6packTurner on Wed Jun 22, 2005
Great phone. I was using 6620 and s66, ended up selling 6620 as it was too big and i could never get used to the weird Symbian OS.
S66 pros - great camera, big lcd, pretty damn loud ringers. Bluetooth was better connecting than v551 or 6620. Kinda cheap
S66 cons - Early models froze like popsicles. Cingular sent me 3 phones. Has even more glitches once unlocked.

OK phone, good camera w/ flash
Reviewer: Vu Tang Clan on Thu Jul 21, 2005
OK phone
Good phone for pictures and video especially with the flash attachment. It is a good phone to go on vacation with especially with a big memory card. However, the phone will occasionally lock up and I have to remove the battery to restart it in picture/video mode. The screen is very visible in sunlight unlike my Razr.
Major drawback is the Calendar cannot be manipulated with the Mobile Phone Tools. Work would be much better if I could have my appointments on my phone. I would have also preferred MP3 ringtones capability over the polyphonic ones.
