K850i User Review
Reviewer: MackeyBloom on Wed Jan 23, 2008
I have had this phone for about one month now and I could not be happier. This phone is such an improvement over the Razr I had, I couldn't even begin to list all the differences.
To begin with, I selected this phone after extensive research of phones -trying to find the ones that are truly international. I travel throughout the world and got tired of renting phones - especially in Japan. Hence, the primary criteria was a phone capable of operating UMTS2100, second had to be GSM, 3G, and HSDPA capable, thirdly had to support GSM850 (which Cingular still uses in my area).
Having set those criteria, that narrowed the search quite a bit. I chose the Green version of the phone as the case is a uniform color - the blue phones have a piano black faceplate and a silver-gray back. I didn't think it looked all that swell, yet the Blue appears to be the more popular color.
The phone is packed with features, including a 5MP camera with Xenon flash. The camera can take Video, Stills, or Panorama. There is a feature called BestPic which, in essence, takes a series of pictures (my guess is about 1/2 F stop either side of 'normal') and you can select which picture is best. If you have a PictBridge capable printer, then there is no need to work the photos through a PC.
Must have accessories: 2GB or 4GB memory card. I found the 512MB card that comes with the camera limiting. Next, a decent Bluetooth headset - I selected Sony HBH-DS980 which works perfectly with the phone. Finally, get yourself the CDS-65 deskstand and connect it with your PC.
Annoyances: Just a few pet peeves --- the phone menu screen timesout and goes to keyboard lock too soon, I wish there was a way to adjust it, but I have to find it. Distinctive ringtones are not broadcast through the Bluetooth headset as I had hoped - at least in the combination I have all I get in the headset is a generic tweedle. I found that the phone's system of allocating some pictures, media, etc to the phone memory annoying. It is cumbersome to transfer information from Phone Memory to Memory stick but it can be done - I had called S-E support twice to figure it out. The program the phone comes with "PCSuite" is darned annoying and unintuitive. It took a couple of tries to have the program recognize my phone, which is connected through the USB port - and I wish PC Suite had a MAC version -- sorry Windows only. And forget the claim that it automatically handles iTunes -- finally if iTunes flags the song as being protected, forget about downloading to the phone.
One the plus side: media management is wonderful. An unlimited number of playlists can be generated and whatever music you have can be entered into separate playlists over and over.
Pictures are wonderful and crisp. "Film speed" is adjustable. Pictures can be posted to your blog in real time if your carrier supports it.
Which brings up one important point: it is of paramount importance that you use the Configurator on the S-E website for this phone. Settings for WAP, etc are buried deep in the menus.
More later.
