T-Mobile Sidekick 2 User Reviews

Some unhappy soul here mentioned that they only bought a Sidekick because Paris Hilton had one.Typically, when I look to compare phones, I don't look to Paris Hilton for advice. Actually, I don't prefer looking to her at all, as she's just not my idea of beauty. But, I digress...

That said, the Sidekick II/Hiptop 2 is exactly what it's cracked up to be. In one small package, you have: phone, text messaging, instant messaging, web browsing and a personal organizer. While some of what follows are personal preferences, and is directly related to service through T-Mobile...

Pros:
Size- one would expect such a versatile little toy to be bulkier, but it's fairly compact without going overboard. I like a phone to fit it my hand, yet remain harder to lose than the keychain phones that are all the rage as of late. In other words, I'm not trying to lose a $300 phone.

Ease-of-use- One word... QWERTY! OK...that may not technically be a word, but I think you follow. Gone are the days of character-cycling and the need to form sentences such as "r u going 2 b L8?" in attempts to save time and frustration. This baby types like the real thing...matter o' fact, I'm typing this on my Sidekick. This opens the door to not just clear and concise text and instant messaging, but on-the-go e-mailing(see below) as well as my absolute favorite recent activity, instant blogging.

Display- The size and clarity are both impressive, reminding me more of a flat screen LCD monitor rather than your typical cell phone screen.

OS. - Simple and to the point. All applications are just a scroll-wheel flick away from the jumpscreen (desktop). The revolving icon list saves screenroom while giving a smooth Windows XP feel to operation.

Button configuration- Well planned, allowing the user to operate mainly by muscle memory after a short "breaking-in" period. The dedicated '@' key has me absent-mindedly reaching for it while seated at the PC. In addition, anyone who successfully combined a D-pad button with an earpiece that lights up in a functional manner gets a good nod from me.

Connectivity-
As a pre-paid customer, I'm getting unlimited data for $1 a day...not too shabby. Now, I'm in a major metropolitan area (Phila,PA), so signal strength is rarely an issue. That said, page loading time while surfing can take anywhere from 5 seconds to 45 seconds on the average. Keep in mind that multiple factors are involved, from page content to server speed. Most laptops connecting via a cell phone are about the same speed if not slower.

Cons:
Battery- I can't go a day without a charge, and I haven't gotten around to buying one for the car. Until I do, the phone charges when I doi overnight. Also, the battery isn't removable, so no spare.

USB port- Sure, it's got one. And unless you have a developer's key, it's about as functional as our current president...looks nice, but just an empty hole. Fortunately, T-Mobile has an online interface where everything on your Sidekick is accessible online, from e-mail to your photo gallery and then some. No file transfer, though, so any custom ringtones will have to be purchased and downloaded, rather than uploading your own- how I miss my bagpipes of past phones! Everything else is transferable though. Take a picture and see it almost instantly via your web interface. Or just e-mail it to yourself- the unlimited data plan includes e-mail to, so no paying to e-mail yourself a picture. Take note, however, that custom images have no place on this device, save for the 'hibernation' screen, which is unbacklit and barely visible anyway.

There's really not a lot of cons involved here. Essentially, it's the mac of pda's...it is what is, and if you want to upgrade, they'll be more than happy to sell you their software to do it...no 3rd party software installs here.
I highly urge you to check the on-site geographical map before purchasing anything from T-Mobile. Many complaints of bad signals have been made by folks who didn't do their homework on that front. I've found the map to be quite detailed and accurate.
I think that about covers it. It's not a blackberry...it's not a laptop. It is what it is...a Sidekick- not a hero.

The Sidekick 2 is arguably the BEST messaging phone out the in the market today icon_cool.gif . The features of the phone are the following: Instant Messaging, Web Browser, Calculater, Calender, Notepad, Games, and it also has a camera. Now to rate this phone is a hard job because the nagitives and positives even each other out. For instance if you want a phone for the camera this phone is possibly the WORST icon_surprised.gif phone to get but the AIM and the Beautiful QWERTY Keyboard evens it out. I've had this phone for about a year so I know every detail and feature. Now I will breakdown every aspect and rate it so you can get a better idea.

The Good icon_wink.gif !!!
1. The AIM and Yahoo Messagers are Perfect!!! 10!!!
2. A Personal Email Account is Perfect!!! 10!!!
3. The Keyboard is a Beauty and is easy to use. 10!!!
4. Battery Life is GREAT!!! 10!!!
5. Address Book is a easy to use system and is good to use. 9!!!
6. Flipping the phone is real stylish. 9!!!
7. Gaming is fun and easy. 8!!!
8. Click Wheel is real cool. 8!!!

The Bad icon_squint.gif !!!
1. The Web Browser is slow and screen loads are often inaccurate. 6!!!
2. Phone Size is heavy and too big. 5!!!
3. The Screen is Vunerable to hits and scratches!!! Get a Case!!! 5!!!

The Ugly icon_devil.gif !!!
1. Reception is horrible takes so long to regain strength!!! 4!!!
2. The CAMERA SUCKS!!! 2!!!
3. Phone is too basic and simple!!! Not too many features.

Overall, I give the phone an 8 because with such cons the pros are just so great. It has I Think the best AIM program, Email Program and MAYBE the best QWERTY Keyboard. Good Phone too simple, wait for the Sidekick 3, trust me so far what I hear its going to blow you away icon_cool.gif !!!
