Audiovox SMT5600 Review - Basic Features / Screen / Audio / Messaging

Basic Features

Running off a 200-MHz Texas Instruments OMAP 730 processor, the SMT5600 integrates a ARM926EJ-S core for application processing; offering twice the application performance while doubling the standby time over previous generations of handsets, smartphones and PDAs.

Operating under the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition OS, the Audiovox SMT5600 comes with Pocket versions of Internet Explorer, Outlook, Media Player 10, MSN Messenger, and ActiveSync.

Released for the Cingular / AT&T Wireless, the tri-band SMT5600 operates over GSM 850 / 1800 / 1900 MHz frequencies. Audiovox rated the SMT5600's 1050 Li-Ion battery at up to 5 hours of talk time, and 4 days (96 hours) of standby. Actual times will be slightly less. When handset manufacturers and cell phone carriers list talk time and standby time ratings, they usually include disclaimers about variable performance and often refer to the times they publish as maximum times.

Screen

Audiovox SMT5600 AngleThe Audiovox SMT5600 features a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) screen, capable of displaying 65K colors. Measuring 2.2-inch-diagonally, it has a resolution of 176 x 220 px.

Being TFT, the SMT5600's screen is vibrant and responsive. Since its circuit transistors are placed directly on the glass, rather than STN screens, refreshing does not require the scanning of pixel locations; resulting in quick response times needed for using the display as a viewfinder in camera mode.

Audio

The SMT5600's speaker emits from the right side. Surprisingly loud, in speakerphone mode sounds transmits clearly. Using Windows Media Player 10, the SMT5600 is transformed into a MP3 player. By using the supplied stereo headset, users can download and listen to hours of music. And with the miniSD expansion slot, extra songs can be stored on external memory.

Ringtones support MP3s as well; a step up from polyphonic ringtones. Contrary to MIDIs, MP3s are straight recordings from an audio source, rather than musical notes played through a local synthesizer. The result is an exact duplicate of the recorded source, including music with lyrics or recorded voice. Anything users can play and record can be turned into a ringtone.

Messaging

Audiovox SMT5600 MSN MessengerSMS text messaging is supported with T9 predictive text. However should users require more than words, the SMT5600 also supports MMS (Multimedia Message Service).

By providing true multimedia capabilities, users can attach photos and video taken with the built-in camera, sound, and time-based sequencing.

Log on to MSN Messenger and chat with friends on the SMT5600. Similar to the desktop version, users can quickly send instant messages to anyone on their contact list while interacting with multiple people at the same time. Additionally, the "My Text" feature allows frequently used messages to be sent with a single tap.
