Entertainment

Running Windows Mobile 2003 SE, the SMT5600 comes packed with software users know, offering personal information management and email functionality through Outlook, a Web browser in Pocket Internet Explorer, instant message capabilities with MSN Messenger, and even the ability to listen to music and play video with Windows Media Player.

Those familiar with Windows will notice similarities with the "Pocket" versions. A quick rundown of the included programs include ActiveSync, Calculator, Calendar, Contacts, Games, Internet Explorer, Java MIDlet Manager, Messaging, MSN Messenger, Tasks, Windows Media Player, and Voice Notes. The SMT5600 is extremely versatile as a PDA. Aside from the previously mentioned programs, a huge library of third-party applications available as well.

With Contacts, users can easily store and find addresses, phone numbers, and other personal contact information. Enter contacts in Outlook on a desktop PC and sync with the SMT5600 or enter them directly.

Quickly view the day's agenda or scheduled meetings for the entire month and respond to new meeting requests at the touch of a button. Even beam appointments from one device to another via infrared.

The To-Do list can synchronize with Outlook's task list, enabling consumers to mark a task complete, re-activate it, unmark as complete, or delete it.

Two preinstalled games come on the SMT5600: Jawbreaker, and Solitaire. Jawbreaker is a puzzle game where the object is to clear out all the balls on the screen, while Solitaire needs no explanation.

Additionally, by supporting Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME), the SMT5600 allows users to download and install Java games and applications. Being the most popular platform for Java MIDlets, there are an abundance of applications and games already out on the market.

Multiple POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP accounts are supported for email configuration with third-party servers. Pocket Outlook is included as well, allowing users to synchronize through ActiveSync with desktop email. Additionally, users of Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft Mobile Information Server can easily access information remotely as well.

However perhaps the most exciting feature is the ability to view TV shows directly on the SMT5600. Users with a Media Center PC can automatically record shows. Windows Media Player 10 will automatically convert video for playback and sync with the SMT5600, allowing users to watch their favorite TV programs on the road. Conversion can take some time depending on the content, length, and CPU speed, and the video isn't stellar. However for a mobile device, it is definitely watchable.

Lastly, the SMT5600 can be customized to reflect unique personalities. In addition to changing the colors, ring tones, and wallpapers, users can tailor their home screen to show the calendar, inbox message counts, missed phone calls, and much more in a single view.
