LG CG225 Review - Entertainment / Internet / Storage

Entertainment

The CG225 includes many of the basic applications that are found on today's phones, such as an Alarm Clock, Calculator, Calendar, Notes, Tip Calculator, Unit Converter, and World Clock. The handset also includes a 255 contact address book, an eight entry speed dial (+1 for Voicemail), and easy redial for the last 20 dialed calls.

Offering two trial games, the CG225 is preinstalled with Tetris, the classic puzzle game, and Midnight Pool, a popular billiards game. Offering limited access, trial versions can be upgraded to full versions when purchased through Cingular.

Built in J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition), the CG225 can also download and install additional games and applications. While space is rather limited, user can easily buy a wide variety of programs through Cingular's MEdia Net service.

Internet

With the CG225's WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) 2.0 browser, the users can access the latest news, weather, sports scores, and stock quotes. However, it utilizes the rather outdated GPRS (Class 10) connection which only allows modem-like connection speeds of up to 48 kbps.

LG CG225 BackMost new mobile devices are moving to 3G internet connectivity and beyond, which allows for download speeds 3-12x faster than traditional GPRS networks. Many video phones can access Cingular's EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution) network, a 2.5G standard, but the newest phones being released are even faster; harnessing the power of HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) for broadband 3G speeds.

Mobile web browsing is still in its infancy. And for consumers who don't plan on connecting their laptop through their phone, GPRS connections will be sufficient, fast enough to get an occasional sports score or download a ringtone.

Storage

The CG225's memory is partitioned into several sections. For Games and Applications, it is limited to 592 KB while it offers 1.5 MB for use in Multimedia Messaging.

The VGA camera has 300 KB in available memory which can allow up to 74 photos taken at the lowest resolution. A handy display in the screen's top right corner during camera mode lets the user know how many more pictures they will be able to take at the current resolution setting.

Memory space can be a limiting factor with the CG225. Users who do not plan to download many ringtones or games may find the memory space adequate. However, even moderate multimedia users who are looking for more than one or two ringtones will be frustrated by the phone's lack of memory space.
