LG VX7000 Review - Camera / Screen / Audio

Camera

However the main attraction is undoubtedly the built-in camera. A CMOS 0.3 megapixel VGA camera is innovatively mounted with the lens on the hinge.

Designed for ease of use and flexibility, the positioning allows users to take pictures from any angle, by simply turning the lens on the hinge. With a 180 degree turning radius, self-portraits become much easier by turning the camera towards the user and still using the internal screen as the viewfinder. Image resolutions can be set at either Low (160 x 120 px), Low (176 x 144 px), Med (320 x 240 px), or High (640 x 480 px).

Additional features such as 3, 5, and 10 second timers, external flash, Brightness and White Balance color adjustments, and filter effects including Antique, Black and White, and Negative add a new level to the VX7000

LG VX7000 FlashThe external LCD can double as a viewfinder when the VX7000 is closed. Although the external display is not as clear as the internal display, objects are recognizable enough to figure out what the lens is pointed at.

But that's not all. The VX7000 also has the ability to capture 15 second video clips with recording and playback functionality. Recorded videos can be sent via email through Verizon's Video Messaging service (Video format viewable with Apple QuickTime 6.5).

Screen

Similar to the VX6000, the VX7000 features both internal and external screens. The internal LCD features an impressive 262K color 176 x 220 px TFT display, with capabilities of displaying up to 11 lines of text. While the external 4096 color 96 x 96 px STN screen can show up to 4 lines of text.

LG VX7000 OpenWith high-end phones using TFT screens, more vivid displays and faster refresh rates are possible. LG has designed the VX7000 with an internal TFT screen due to the need for fast changing displays when using it as a viewfinder for camera mode. Also TFT screens are more visible in sunlight providing sharp bright images, no matter what lighting conditions are present.

The external display is STN rather than TFT. STN screens have ghosting and residual artifacts from previous screens due to slow refresh rates. The benefit of TFT screens comes from placing the transistors directly on the surface resulting in considerably faster refresh rates. As a result, STN screens are decent for displays that don't require high performance, such as external displays which show battery life, time, date, etc.

Audio

As for ringtones, the VX7000 is CMX 3.0 compliant. MIDI files may be converted to 16 bit mono WAV files and used as ringtones. A few ringtones come preinstalled on the phone; more can be obtained through WAP or transferring via data cable.

However, most users would probably prefer to use MP3 files as ringtones for more realistic sounds and music. A convenient way to transfer MP3 ringtones without using Verizon's expensive Get It Now service, or through a data cable is through email. By renaming the file to the MIDI extension (*.mid) and emailing the file to the phone at yourphonenumber@vwpix.com, users will receive the file and be able to save it as an MP3 file. After it is received, users need only to rename it back to the MP3 file extension.

The benefit of MP3 ringtones as opposed to MIDI files are tremendous. Aside from the obvious quality difference, MP3 ringtones do not have to be music. Creative users can set their ringtone to anything they record. Whether it be voice, sounds, or music, the possibilities are endless.
