LG VX8700 Review - Basic Features / Screen / Audio

Basic Features

Of the two display options offered with the phone, business and metallic, the second was cleaner and complemented the overall design of the phone. The grey and platinum design also made it simpler to navigate the menu, while the bright, multi-colored business design was distracting.

The gallery of 9 wallpaper options showcased the bright, vivid colors of the display, but the images were not otherwise very unique or exciting. Flash wallpapers have two "fun animations" that highlight the phone's brilliant TFT display.

Speed dial can also be programmed with up to 95 entries, and three emergency contacts can be created. Standard tools included in the VX8700 are calendar, alarm clock, world clock, notepad, calculator and tip calculator.

Calls on the VX8700 are supported by the digital dual-band CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) 800 MHz network, which provides better call quality. This platform allows more cell phone users on the airwaves at the same time. Users have up to three hours and 20 minutes of talk time with the VX8700, and up to 10 days of standby with the 800 mAh Li-Ion battery, slightly less than with the VX8600.The phone allows users to send text messages of up to 1,064 characters, and photo and video messages can also be sent.

Incoming and outgoing calls can be managed so that they are limited to contacts only, all calls are blocked, or all calls are allowed. Contacts and calendar events can be sent from the phone using Bluetooth technology, and user-generated photos can be printed and sent via Bluetooth.

LG VX8700 AngleThe VX8700 also supports Verizon Wireless' VZ Navigator service, which allows the phone to be used as a GPS navigation device. The service costs $9.99 per month or $2.99 per day.

Screen

The VX8700 sports cutting edge screens both inside and outside the clamshell phone, and the internal display is especially impressive. The animated wallpaper that comes with the phone showcases the crisp definition of the TFT (Thin Film Transistor) LCD screen and Flash-based user interface.

Both the external and internal displays are TFT screens, meaning they produce more brilliant colors and quicker refresh rates compared with other LCD technology.

On the outside, the 65K-color display has 48 x 160 px. Inside, a large 262K-color display has 240 x 320 px.

Audio

The VX8700 functions as a music player for WMA and MP3 formatted files, and music can be synced to the phone from a personal computer or purchased from Verizon Wireless' VCAST service starting at $1.99 per track.

Speaker independent voice recognition, one-touch speakerphone, and an M-4 rating hearing aid compatibility are also audio highlights of the handset. Users have up to three hours and 20 minutes of talk time with the VX8700.

Volume appears to be one weakness for the phone, since the highest volume level on the VX8700 is not very loud. Thirteen ring tones as well as vibrate and silent modes come standard with the phone, and users can customize their tones with quick access to Verizon Wireless' Get it Now service.
