Motorola E815 Review - Camera / Basic Features

Camera

Activating the camera converts the internal LCD into the viewfinder; also displaying available memory. Capturing photos from a vertical orientation, the Motorola E815 is built with an integrated 1.3-megapixel camera; capable of resolutions up to 1024 x 1280 px. But photo quality can also be adjusted between QQVGA (120 x 160 px), QVGA (240 x 320 px), and VGA (480 x 640 px) as well.

With improved sharpness and clarity over the V710, even in low-light conditions, the high-resolution allows users to take photos large enough to make adequate prints; giving them the added ability of having a camera at hand for impromptu moments.

Motorola has made getting into the shot easy as well. Closing the E815 in Camera Mode activates the external monitor as the viewfinder, allowing users to see what's in frame before their eyes.

Moving closer to the action, pressing up and down on the navigational keypad triggers the 4x zoom while left and right key presses adjust brightness levels. Bundled with camera settings and effects, features include Effects (Color, Black and White, Antique, and Negative), Contrast Adjustments, Self-Timer, and Flash.

Limited only by the available memory, around 5 minutes of video can recorded on the 40 MB internal storage; with even more on a TransFlash card. Encoded in 3GPP codec (H.263 and AMR) format, the E815 takes advantage of MPEG-4 for delivery of video and audio. Video adjustment settings include Auto Repeat, Timer, Video Length, Lighting Conditions, Recording Sound, and Status Icons.

Basic Features

Sporting a more responsive OS compared the V710, the Motorola E815 features dual-band frequencies (800 / 1900 CDMA), making it compatible with only Verizon Wireless. Unfortunately the Motorola E815 is all digital, so consumers who rely heavily on analog should be wary.

Rating the E815's 1030 mAh Li-Ion battery at 4.67 hours of talk and 300 hours of standby times, these are under optimal conditions. Actual talk and standby times are lower. Manufacturers and carriers often list talk and standby time ratings with disclaimers about variable performance.
