Screen
The Motorola E815's 1.3-inch external LCD is able to display 4K-colors.
Measuring 96 x 64 px in resolution, the CSTN (Color Super Twisted Nematic)
external screen is rather unreadable when not backlit or in direct sunlight.
A common tradeoff among CSTN technology to prolong battery life, the LCD allows
users to conveniently glance at incoming calls, time, network status, and
battery level.
Unlike the external display, the advanced 262K-color 176 x 220 px internal
screen requires fast refresh rates for applications and video. Being TFT
(Thin Film Transistor), rather than CSTN, the 2.2-inch LCD has circuit
transistors placed directly on the glass; technology allowing for faster
refresh rates resulting from not having to scan each pixel location. Vividly
bright and clear, the TFT display is one of the best to date and comfortable
to watch streaming videos on.
Audio
The E815 is able to overlay 64 chords simultaneously to produce melodic
polyphonic ringtones. Beautifully reproduced, polyphonic ringtones are actually
files of "musical notes" that are read and played through a local synthesizer.
With more simultaneous chords supported, more sounds can be combined, producing
richer-sounding music.
But
the market is steadily moving towards MP3s. Rather than being synthesized,
MP3s are created from straight recordings, so the exact audio source can
be set to the ringtone. Whether it is music with lyrics, voice, or sounds,
anything that can be recorded can be set as a ringtone.
Users can enjoy music through the built-in MP3 player as well. With the
ample storage space and expansion card slot, hours of music are available
without bringing an extra device. Supporting stereo audio, the E815 features
a standard 2.5 mm headset jack for great audio quality.
Activating the speakerphone mode lets users to talk with their hands
free. Wonderfully loud, the E815's audio capabilities are clear and free from
distortion. Additionally, voice dialing is a breeze. With ObeyMoto, Motorola's
speaker independent voice dialing system, consumers need only to state a number
or name to be connected with ease.
Messaging
Featuring
all the standard text messaging formats: SMS (Short Messaging Service),
EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service), and MMS (Multimedia Message Service),
the Motorola E815 brings text messaging to the next level, combining superb
multimedia functionality with high-speed EV-DO broadband speeds.
Taking full advantage of EV-DO, users can transfer high-resolution photos
and video clips to friends and family. Whether it's sending photo postcards
with personalized messages, or a birthday video greeting, the E815 gives
users the versatility and power to combine text and multimedia for unrestricted
creativity.
The redesigned numeric keypad is wonderful to type on. Slight annoyances
with the V710's keypad were fixed, sufficiently spacing out keys with a
conventional layout. Using the iTAP predictive text system, instead of using
multiple key presses to input a letter, the E815 is able to anticipate which
word is being typed by choosing from a dictionary of words and phrases.
