Motorola KRZR K1m Review - Basic Features / Screen

Basic Features

Spiffy design aside, it is by their very nature the primary business of mobile phones to facilitate the making of and receiving of calls. The KRZR K1m offers an acceptable number of features which make possible convenient telephone communication.

For a given contact, the Contacts list stores Name, two Mobile umbers, Home number, Work number, two Email addresses, Group, and Fax. In addition, each Contact can be assigned a picture and specific ringtone to help instantly identify special incoming callers. Numbers may be assigned to speed dial from the Contacts Options menu. The phone keeps track of the 60 most recent calls, to help in the recovery of unrecorded but unexpectedly needed numbers.

For those who wish to enjoy an evening at the theater, an hour or two of uninterrupted work, or an undisturbed night's sleep, Voicemail is available to take messages from incoming callers. For those who wish to share their conversation with others in the general vicinity, speakerphone should do the trick.

Other handy features include redial and automatic redial, the latter of which attempts to call a busy number for four minutes before giving up. If the call goes through, the phone rings or vibrates to alert the user. For added safety, the phone can call 911 under any circumstance, even if the phone is locked. Assisted Global Positioning Service (AGPS), if activated, can help locate distressed callers if the local authorities have the proper equipment to detect signals.

The KRZR K1m steps up to the mobile phone directive of competent call capabilities. With a fine Contacts list, Voicemail, Speakerphone, Redial, and Emergency Calling, the phone satisfies basic calling needs.

Screen

Motorola KRZR K1m ScreenThe KRZR K1m features both a 176 x 220 px 65K-color TFT internal screen and a 96 x 80 px 65K-color STN screen for the user's viewing pleasure.

The external screen displays the basics: time, date, signal strength, battery level, etc. The screen is a little on the small side, but certainly meets the display requirements of an external screen. Since the external screen has 65K colors, it can use the same fancy wallpapers as the internal screen, including user photos. When the phone is shut in camera mode, the external screen may be used as a camera screen for self-portraits.

The internal screen displays the same status icons as the external screen, as well as a customizable banner. User photos and other downloaded pictures may be used as wallpapers. In addition to the default, users may choose from three display themes: Business, Tropical, and Blue. Sadly, nothing can be done about the color of the red Verizon bars that frame the top and bottom of the screen. Users may also adjust brightness, backlight timing, and set a screensaver for both the external and internal screens.
