Running Windows Mobile 5.0, users can schedule tasks and read email through
Pocket Outlook, browse the web using Pocket Internet Explorer, enjoy music
and videos via Media Player 10 Mobile, and chat with friends and family
with MSN Messenger. Other basic PIM (Personal Information Management) applications
include ActiveSync, Calculator, Calendar, Contacts, Games, Media Center,
Messaging, Tasks, and Voice Notes.
The Calendar, Contact, and Messaging (including email), and Tasks are
integrated into Pocket Outlook. Allowing users to organizes their lives
by the entire month, week, or day, appointments and emails can be kept up
to date by synchronizing with Outlook on a PC; either via ActiveSync or
beaming appointments from one device to another through infrared.
The addition of Wireless Sync from Verizon Wireless helps make life on-the-go
easier and more productive. With always-on push email, travelers can stay
connected and get the job done without a delay and in a secure environment.
For the occasional email user, the Q is a decent solution. However consumers
who expect to use it heavily may be annoyed with the interface. Unable to
delete group emails and often requiring several key presses to perform simple
tasks, the Treo 700 seems to offers better functionality for the business
user.
Pocket MSN gives users access to popular Microsoft products such as chat
through MSN Messenger, email access through MSN Hotmail, and direct access
to the MSN Mobile Homepage
The Q also supports voice recognition through VoiceSignal technology.
Providing speaker-independent voice command functionality, all without speech
training, users can launch programs, dial numbers, and lookup contacts by
using just their voice.
Two games come preinstalled on the Q: Bubble Breaker and Solitaire. As
a puzzle game, Bubble Breaker's objective is to clear out all the balls
on the screen by "breaking" similar colored balls, while Solitaire is the
popular one-player card game.
Regrettably, Verizon Wireless has yet to work out a pricing plan for
the Q, so consumers are unable to take advantage of streaming live and prerecorded
videos and music downloads through VCAST Music and Video. Fortunately, Windows
Mobile 5.0 offers is the wide variety of applications already created by
3rd party developers. Two of the more fascinating ones are from Sling Media
and XM Radio.
SlingPlayer Mobile is an application that gives SlingBox owners a powerful
option to watch mobile television on any Windows Mobile 5.0 based device.
Streaming real-time video, channel surfers can watch television as if sitting
at home. Through broadband Internet, video quality is exceptional offering
up to 15 frames per second.
Available to XM Online subscribers, the Mini XM application lets consumers
access XM satellite radio stations on the Q. Enjoying various channels based
on genre, music listeners can stream live radio directly. Supporting any
type of Internet connection, users can connect a broad range of multimedia
programs to watch and listen to shows anywhere they have an Internet connection
on the road.
