Storing up to 1000 contacts on its PhoneBook, the SLVR incorporates common
PIM (Personal Information Management) applications such as Alarm Clock,
Calculator, Datebook, and Voice Recorder features.
Additionally, an integrated email client allows connections to POP3 and
SMTP accounts, although oddly, IMAP4 is noticeably missing. A poor choice
for business consumers, the SLVR was never meant to be a PDA replacement.
Fortunately though, the SLVR L7 supports J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro
Edition). Allowing users to download and install Java-based games and applications,
consumers have an abundance supply to choose from due to J2ME's dominance
as the most popular platform for mobile devices. Some are free for download,
however most are developed by corporations and require a fee.
Internet
Equipped
with GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) Class 10 (4+2) technology, customers
can retrieve information and browse the web at up to 48 kbps. But with many
phones progressing into video streaming, carriers are boasting broadband-like
speeds. Unfortunately GPRS is as fast as the SLVR will get; EDGE (Enhanced
Data rates for Global Evolution) support was not included for Cingular's
3G network.
Storage
With 5.0 MB of internal memory, there is plenty of storage for photos,
ringtones, and text messages. However, to use the built-in MP3 player, more
memory is needed which the SLVR provides via a TransFlash memory card slot
located on the bottom right side. Currently cards up to 512 MB can be purchased
separately.
