Motorola V635 Review - Screen / Audio / Messaging

Screen

Conveniently glance at incoming calls with the Motorola V635's CSTN (Color Super Twisted Nematic) external screen. Measuring 96 x 80 px, the 4K-color LCD displays additional information including time, network status, and battery level. Rather unreadable when not backlit or in direct sunlight, it is a common tradeoff among CSTN technology to prolong battery life.

On the other hand when flipped opened, a vividly brilliant internal TFT (Thin Film Transistor) screen is exposed, capable of displaying 65K colors at 176 x 220 px in resolution.

Being TFT, rather than CSTN, circuit transistors are placed directly on the glass; technology allowing for faster refresh rates resulting from not having to scan each pixel location. Needed for fast refresh rates, the V635's internal TFT screen is ideal for using the phone as a viewfinder. Bright and clear, the TFT screen doesn't have the dull appearance the external screen does.

Audio

Motorola V635 ScreenThe V635's 22 KHz speaker is able to overlay 24 chords simultaneously; decent compared to today's phones. Much like instruments in an orchestra, users can also create their own music through MotoMixer. By superimposing base tracks and melodies, creative composers can mix their own unique ringtones.

Even though the V635 features polyphonic ringtones, consumers will most likely opt for MP3s. Unlike typical ringtones, which uses a local synthesizer to recreate music, the V635 can play MP3s at a maximum compression rate of 64 kbps. Hence CD tracks, voice recordings, or any audio can be turned into a ringtone.

Using the V635 as an MP3 player requires the use of expandable memory due to the limited internal storage size. Through the included stereo headset and preinstalled player, users can listen to their favorite songs on the road. Other audio capabilities include speakerphone handsfree access, voice recording, and voice dialing.

Messaging

The Motorola V635 includes all the standard text messaging formats: SMS (Short Messaging Service), EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service), and MMS (Multimedia Message Service).

Besides sending just text, EMS lets users format style, size, alignment, and paragraphs. Additionally, MMS allows users to attach photos, sounds, and time-based sequencing; utilizing the integrated camera, video capture, and voice recorder.

Motorola V635 KeypadSince the numeric keypad requires multiple key presses to input a letter, predictive text makes typing simpler. Choosing from a dictionary of words and phrases, the V635 is able to anticipate which word is being typed. But instead of the more widely used T9 standard, the V635 uses iTAP.

Real-time chat programs also are preinstalled, permitting users start typing away with their buddies. But Wireless Village instant messaging goes beyond previous mobile chat features. By defining open connections with existing IM providers, users can use the most popular chat programs such as AOL, ICQ, Yahoo, and MSN.

Aside from just chatting, Wireless Village allows people to share personal information about their status, (On-line, Off-line, or Busy), location (Home or Work), and moods (Happy or Angry). Additionally, services let users participate in private and public chartrooms.
