Motorola V635 Review - Entertainment / Internet / Storage

Entertainment

Able to store 1000 contacts in the Phonebook, the V635 incorporates general PIM (Personal Information Management) applications including Alarm Clock, Calculator, Datebook, and Voice Recorder. Through the integrated email client, the V635 supports POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP accounts. Having the option to watch headers and download the body, consumers are able to connect to third-party email servers.

Additionally through J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition), software can be installed on the V635. Being the most popular Java platform for mobile devices, thousands of games and applications have been created by developers, most requiring a fee. Through the internet, users can download and transfer installation files to the V635.

Although the game titles are dependant upon carrier, two J2ME games will most likely come with the V635: Golf and TopGun.

Internet

Motorola V635 OpenIntegrating a web browser, the Motorola V635 renders pages built upon WAP 2.0 markup languages. Frequently maintaining pages dedicated to real-time data, carriers often provide weather reports, sports scores, stocks quotes, and travel information. And through GPRS Class 10, surfers will be able to browse the web and download multimedia at speeds of up to 48 kbps.

But users probably won't use it much. The Motorola V635 supports high-speed transfer through EDGE (Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution). Building on existing technology, EDGE allows for more than double existing GPRS rates. While theoretically able to transfer at speeds of up to 384 kbps, actual rates will be less.

Storage

With 5.0 MB of internal memory, space for photos, ringtones, and applications should be enough. Dynamically shared among all content stored, users may find themselves running out with such storage-hungry multimedia features.

But should consumers wish to use the V635 as an MP3 player, more memory is required. Fortunately, the Motorola V635 features a TransFlash / microSD expansion slot; hidden underneath the front cover. Rather inconvenient, removing the rim reveals the slot.
