The 3200 has all the necessary text messaging features: SMS, MMS, and EMS. For SMS, concatenated messages are supported up to a maximum length of 885 symbols. If you need to send text messages to more than one person, distribution lists can be created.

With MMS, you can send text messages with embedded pictures and sounds. Currently the 3200 supports jpg, gif, and bmp picture formats, and SP-MIDI ring tones. All with a maximum message limit of 100 KB.

T9 predictive text is also included. It allows users to text message faster by predicting the word being typed by comparing the letters entered with an internal dictionary. Each additional letter entered narrows the choices down.

However, even with T9, text messaging proves to be slower than normal. It has less to do with the software features of the 3200 and more to do with the physical characteristics of the phone. Many people will find the keypad the major bottleneck in their typing speeds. As earlier mentioned, the V-shaped keys have two inputs for each button: an up and down key press. The six button layout, instead of the normal twelve, will force users to retrain themselves. If you've been text messaging for ages and desperately live by it, then the extra hassle may not be worth it.
