Camera
The focus of the 5310 XpressMusic is, obviously, on the music. That being
said, the phone's camera is a pretty solid offering. At 2.0-megapixels,
the camera certainly isn't innovative, but it's certainly up to the higher-end
of standard. The Nokia 5310 also features many other now-standard camera
features, including a 4x Zoom lens and a video recorder, as well as an array
of settings and options that allow for customized cell phone photography.

Settings include old standards like a Self-Timer (3, 5, or 10 seconds),
White Balance (Auto, Daylight, Tungsten, Fluorescent), and Color Effects
(Normal, False Colors, Grayscale, Sepia, Negative, and Solarize). Another
option switches the orientation of the camera screen from landscape to portrait
and vice versa.
There is an impressive array of image sizes available, from 160 x 120
px up to 1600 x 1200 px. Video resolution features two options (176 x 144
px and 128 x 96 px). Image and video quality both come in three options
- High, Normal, and Basic.
Photos taken with the Nokia 5310 come out clear, clean, and customized,
ready to serve as phone wallpaper or a backup for a stand-alone camera.
The camera is clearly not the focal point of the phone (it takes a bit of
menu navigation to even get to the camera in the first place), but it certainly
rises to a satisfactory level for today's modern cell phone camera standards.
Basic Features
For all the bells and whistles included into today's phones, their primary
use has, of course, always been communication. The Nokia 5310 offers plenty
of standard features to help facilitate this process, including a phonebook,
various phone profiles, voicemail, and others.
The
Phonebook has customizable features galore, and storage room for 2000 contacts.
For each contact in the phone book, a user may assign various phone numbers
(sortable into General, Mobile, Home, Work, and Fax), email addresses, web
addresses, company name, job title, formal name and nickname, street address,
birthday, and, just in case they forgot something, a generic "note." In
addition, users may attach an image, video, or tune to a contact in order
to add a more personal touch. "Phonebook" is perhaps a less appropriate
term than "database," since this feature should keep users up to date on
any and all relevant info on their contacts.
Easy navigation is another way to facilitate calls (and other functions
as well). The five-way navigation key comes preset with easy access to the
menu, Phonebook, text messagine, IM, and a voice recorder. For those who
find other features more necessary for easy access than, say, a voice recorder,
the Go To menu accessed by the left soft key is readily customizable with
just about every feature on the phone. Users may create their own list of
features in their preferred order for convenient access to the functions
that they need. These functions may also include any number of profiles,
such as Normal, Silent, Outdoors, Flight, etc., so that users may quickly
switch phone settings as befits the situation.
Other convenient (and nowadays standard) phone features include speaker
phone, caller ID, speed dial, and a call log. Voicemail and call waiting
are available with an extra fee. Through t-zones, T-Mobil's on-line store,
users may also access My Account, where they can access their plan and usage
information.
With a comprehensive phonebook, easy navigation menus, and all the standard
call features, the Nokia 5310 should keep users connected to their contacts
and facilitate communications.
