Nokia 6102 Review - Introduction / Design

Reviewed by: Allen Tsai - Oct 03, 2005

Introduction

The term clamshell-loving Nokia user may seem to be an oxymoron. Focusing more on block form factors, Nokia flip phones have long been overshadowed by more popular Motorola devices.

While popular overseas, Nokia have lost market share in recent times, unable to capture the attention of the North American consumer. But things may change with the release of its newest devices; the Nokia 6102 for Cingular and its identical twin, the Nokia 6101 for T-Mobile.

Offering a carefully engineered balance of compact size and classic style, both the 6101 and 6102 flip open to reveal a full range of features that appeal to a broad range of mobile phone users.

Design

Nothing particularly stands out aesthetically with the Nokia 6102, which is not necessarily a drawback. Having conservative features, the 6102 is neither flashy nor gaudy. Measuring 85 x 45 x 24 mm and weighing 97 g, the 6102 is average with devices on the market, neither ultra-thin nor overly bulky.

Nokia 6102 ClosedFeaturing a silver-edged black exterior, the 6102's front contains a 4K-color external LCD conveniently displays incoming and everyday information with the flip closed. Above, the lens to a built-in 0.3-megapixel camera is triggered by pressing the Camera Key situated on the right side. Photos of impromptu moments can be captured at up to 640 x 480 px in resolution.

Located next to the Camera Key, an infrared port allows users to transfer and synchronize data wirelessly, while the left side has the volume keys to adjust earpiece and ringer volumes during calls and standby.

A speakerphone is located on the top while a multi-functional system connection port is on the bottom, also used for charging the 6102. Named the Pop-Port, the Nokia designed outlet automatically identifies accessories attached to the 6102. Additionally offering stereo sound with the use of headphones, users can charge their accessories with a single USB cable without the use of separate power sources. Pop-Port transmits up to 230 kbps.

Opening the Nokia 6102, users can navigate through the menu with the 5-way keypad. Featuring a 65K-color internal LCD, two soft keys below provide convenient access to shortcuts.

Out of the box, the Nokia 6102 comes with a standard 720 mAh Li-Ion battery, AC adapter, application software, and user manual.
