Nokia 6102 Review - Camera / Basic Features / Screen

Camera

Triggering the VGA camera, the Nokia 6102's internal LCD turns into the viewfinder (self-portraits are also possible using the external LCD).

With many devices progressing beyond 1-megapixels, the 6102's 0.3-megapixel camera is disappointing, only able to capture photos at 640 x 480 px in size. Encoded in JPEG, users can choose between three image-quality options: high, normal, basic.

Too basic to be a digital camera replacement, the 6102 can't make decent prints, more suitable for sending in multimedia messages or used as phone wallpapers.

A self-timer and Night Mode are included as well, but there is a lack of image processing options. On most phones, features such as digital zoom, exposure and brightness adjustments, or color balance are available. However, the 6102 has no such effects making it fairly weak in post-processing.

Nokia 6102 Camera LensThe Nokia 6102 can record video clips as well. Captured at Sub QCIF (128 x 96 px) resolution, files are encoded in the 3GP codec (H.263 and AMR) format; not very good quality.

Basic Features

The Nokia 6102 is released for Cingular, while the 6101 is for T-Mobile. Both built on a tri-band GSM 850 / 1800 / 1900 network, they are compatible in GSM networks in most North American, European, and Asian GSM markets, provided they unlocked.

Rating the 6102's 760 mAh Li-Ion battery at 4.0 hours and 350 hours of talk and standby times respectively, these are under optimal conditions. Manufacturers and carriers often list talk and standby times with disclaimers about variable performance, and refer to the times they publish as maximum times. Actual talk and standby times are lower.

Screen

Nokia 6102 ScreenDelivering a bright 65K-colors, the spacious 128 x 160 px resolution internal screen is clear even in direct sunlight. Built with advanced TFT (Thin Film Transistor) technology, circuit transistors placed directly on the glass allow fast refresh rates from not having to scan pixel locations.

The 4K-color external screen on the other hand is built on STN (Super Twisted Nematic) technology. While not as capable of delivering vivid colors, STN consumes less power; prolonging battery life.

With the fold is closed, the 96 x 65 px external screen shows signal strength and battery level, network name, time and date, the active profile, and alarm clock or calendar note alerts. Additionally when users have an incoming call, the caller's name or number is shown.
