Nokia 6102 Review - Entertainment / Internet / Storage

Entertainment

Able to hold up to 500 contacts in its Phonebook, the 6102 features basic PIM (Personal Information Management) applications such as Alarm Clock, Calculator, Calendar, Countdown Timer, Notes, Recorder, Stopwatch, and To-Do List.

Users can also check 3rd party email accounts through POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP protocols, but the Nokia 6102 is hardly comes close to the robust functionality of a PDA.

Fortunately, users can download and install Java-based games and applications based on the J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) platform; the most popular platform for mobile devices. Deployed on millions of devices, and supported by leading tool vendors, J2ME is the platform of choice for today's consumer and embedded devices. Not limiting users to preinstalled software, there are already an abundant amount of programs to choose from; some are free to download, however most for a small fee.

Internet

Nokia 6102 OpenRendering web pages upon WAP 2.0 markup languages, consumers can use the Nokia 6102 to browse weather reports, sports scores, stocks quotes, and travel information. Through GPRS Class 10, users can surf the web and download multimedia at speeds of up to 48 kbps. Via GPRS roaming partners, network coverage includes a population area of nearly 268 million.

But users probably won't use it much. Also running on Cingular's 3G service, the 6102 uses EDGE (Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution) allowing consumers to transfer at speeds of up to 70 to 135 kbps, about three times faster than traditional GPRS networks.

Offering coverage in over 13,000 U.S. cities and towns and more than 39,000 miles of U.S. highways, EDGE covers a population of nearly 253 million people. Internationally, EDGE and GPRS roaming is available in more than 80 countries.

Storage

For storage of photos, ringtones, emails, and text messages, the Nokia 6102 comes with 3.5 MB of memory. Lacking an expansion card slot, consumers will need to clear out extra room should more space be needed.
