Samsung MM-A940 Review - Messaging / Entertainment / Internet

Messaging

Via T9 predictive text, users can quickly text message through SMS (Short Messaging Service), EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service), and MMS (Multimedia Message Service). Users can attach photos and recorded voice to personalize messages into vacation postcards and birthday greetings.

And should text messaging get tiring on the thumbs, the A940 supports VoiceSignal's VoiceMode speech-to-text technology. While not natural speech (users will need to pause between each word and clearly enunciate), the VoiceMode is still useful nonetheless, and has improved significantly from prior generation speech-to-text software. Consumers will be pleasantly surprised by the A940's handsfree versatility.

Using Sprint Power Vision, users can access email, exchange text messages, and join chat rooms. Through AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), MSN Messenger, and Yahoo! Messenger clients, users can communicate in real-time with friends and family. Advancing past traditional SMS-based chat, consumers can talk as if sitting in from of their computer screens.

Entertainment

Samsung MM-A940 OpenThe A940 includes common PIM (Personal Information Management) applications such as Alarm Clock, Business Card Scanner, Calculator, Countdown, Memo Pad, Scheduler, Task List and World Timer.

Additionally, consumers can download and install small programs through J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition), a mobile platform for Java-based software. Available through the web, or Sprint's Power Vision service, an abundant supply of productivity tools and games are available. With hundreds of games to choose from, like sports, puzzles and classic favorites, players will find the games that are just right for them.

Gamers don't have to play alone. Through Power Vision, gamers can compete in real-time against others, even if they're clear across the country. As a Sprint device, the A940 can access the Game Lobby to compete, post scores and see game recommendations. Now users don't have to just play during downtime, they can play all the time.

Internet

As one of the first devices on Sprint's new Power Vision 3G network, the A940 is able to give users an accelerated and enhanced wireless Internet experience, including fast Web browsing, email, and company network access, as well as a richer multimedia experience on the third screen with content from Sprint TV, Sirius Music and other live TV and on demand subscription channels.

The Sprint Power Vision Network is based on state-of-the-art EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) technology. EV-DO is up to 10 times faster than the current Sprint Nationwide PCS network. Using the A940, web surfers can access wireless data at average download speeds of 400-700 kbps and peak rates of up to 2 Mbps.

Through Sprint Power Vision, consumers can channel surf in 21st century style. Able to stream shows on the road with live TV, users can enjoy favorite channels right on the A940.

Depending on the subscription package, different channels are available to customers, but users can subscribe to individual channels as well. The basic is the Access Pack which features ABC News Now streaming live news channel and SIRIUS Hits. The Plus Pack includes everything the Access Pack has plus NFL Network, Fox Sports, Fuse, and Fashion TV. Users who subscribe to the Ultimate Pack gain access to all the great channels included with the Power Vision Plus Pack and ESPN, Fox News Channel, NBC, The Weather Channel, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Toon World, Looney Tunes, Comedy Time, and Music Choice.

Launched in July, Sprint Power Vision EV-DO has expanded to more than 141 major markets and more than 250 airports nationwide, and will be accessible on various devices to about 150 million people in over 220 major markets by early 2006.
