Samsung Omnia Review - Entertainment, Internet and Storage

Entertainment

In addition to its business credentials as a Windows Mobile device, the Omnia also features a range of multimedia applications.

VCAST Music with Rhapsody from Verizon Wireless allows users to browse millions of music tracks, purchase and download songs to the handset and also receive a copy of the file for their PC’s. Of course, this is not so great for users with Macs.

Users have access to VZ Navigator for spoken turn-by-turn directions, traffic reports and other services, and VZAppZone which allows users to browse through and purchase add-on applications, which can be charged directly to their Verizon bills.

The Omnia also comes loaded with several applications, from ShoZu which allows users to share photos and videos to Smart Converter to convert units and Smart Reader to photograph text and convert it into a document. The games already loaded on the Omnia are Solitaire and "Bubble Breaker."

Internet

Samsung Omnia Angle 2The Omnia supports Wi-Fi and gives users two options for true Internet browsing, with Windows Mobile Internet Explorer and Opera 9.5 Mobile Browser. The accelerometer that allows the Omnia to change from portrait to landscape orientation makes Web browsing more convenient.

Since the Omnia supports Verizon's fast EV-DO Rev. A broadband network, users can download files about six times faster than on non-EV-DO networks which makes everything from corporate email to podcast downloads more convenient.

Storage

The Omnia has 128MB of memory, which is on par with the T-Mobile G1, although that carrier threw in a 1GB microSD card. Verizon didn't included a memory card, although there is a slot under the handset's back cover for cards up to 16 GB. Fortunately, the back cover is easy to remove, although this is still a slightly inconvenient location for a card slot.
