The A870 features the standard array of tools: Calculator, Calendar,
Alarm Clock, World Clock, Stop Watch, and Notepad.
The Calculator, in a nice touch, is in reality a calculator triad, including
basic, tip and conversion calculators. The conversion calculator not only
helps with pesky Metric / English confrontations, but also expedites international
encounters with a currency converter. The Alarm Clock and Calendar help
consumers to manage time and keep track of appointments. World Clock, Stop
Watch, and Notepad do exactly as advertised.
Games do not come preinstalled on the phone; they must be downloaded
from Get It Now. Users may download a variety of BREW games for a fee -
some games offer a monthly subscription in addition to permanent purchase.
In fact, as usual with Verizon, all downloads are handled through the Get
It Now service, so previous Verizon users will probably know what to expect
in terms of available applications, ringtones, and wallpapers.
Costing $9.99 per month for unlimited access, or $2.99 per day, road
warriors can access VZ Navigator for Simultaneous GPS (Global Positioning
System) navigation. Providing Location Based Services (LBS) for maps and
turn-by-turn directions (with written and audible voice), users can get
instructions to any address in the U.S. Able to locate nearly landmarks,
gas stations, banks, ATMs, and more - over fourteen million points are accessible
nationwide.
The A870 features the standard array of tools to help users make calculations
and organize his or her time; games and other applications may be downloaded
for a fee from Get It Now. This arrangement is as can be expected from a
phone of this class.
Internet
Contrary to earlier rumors, the A870 does not feature EV-DO (Evolution-Data
Optimized) 3G broadband Internet, operating instead under the less-advanced
but still functional cdma2000 1xRTT for modem-like rates. Web access comes
through Mobile Web 2.0, allowing users to browse WAP 2.0 and HTML pages.
Instant messaging, chat, and third party email may all be accessed through
the Mobile Web Service. Games, applications, ringtones, and other media
files may be downloaded through Get It Now. While the A870 does not offer
EV-DO, its cdma2000 technology is satisfactory for connecting to the Mobile
Web network.
