Internet
The
U740's EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) network offers high-speed data connectivity
(around 300 to 500 kbps) for downloading the latest multimedia from the
Verizon's VCAST network.
The WAP 2.0 compliant browser taks advantage of a suite of downloadable
programs like VZ Navigator, ChaperoneParent, and Backup Assistance. While
it makes entertainment easier, working seriously with the device is possible
through Wireless Sync, which supports supports Microsoft Exchange, Lotus
Domino, POP3, and IMAP email systems.
While a few Internet messaging sites are accommodated, the U740 also
is compatible with several email services including: MSN Hotmail, AOL Mail,
Yahoo! Mail and others which are searchable in an online database.
Overall, the U740 has Internet capabilities consumers have come to expect
from a multimedia device. Currently one of the fastest devices on the market,
EV-DO is the backbone to Verizon's VCAST offerings.
Storage
With about 60.0 MB of internal memory and running on 7.66 MB of RAM,
the U740 can store plenty of photos and ringtones. However, for more memory-intensive
media such as MP3s or videos, users will need to store them on removable
microSD memory cards, currently available for purchase up to 2 GB in size.
Connectivity
Almost standard these days, the U740 also comes with Bluetooth connectivity,
able to connect with Bluetooth peripherals up to a 10 meter or 30 foot radius.
The U740's Bluetooth capabilities are sparse, offering the most basic
protocols such as Headset Profile (HSP) to connect to wireless Bluetooth
headsets, Hands-free Profile (HFP) to pair with hands-free devices, Object
Push Profile (OPP) to transfer VCards over-the-air, and Dial-Up Networking
Profile (DUN) to use the U740 as a wireless modem in conjunction with a
laptop.
Noticeably missing protocols include the new A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution
Profile) which would have allowed consumers to listen to stereo music over
A2DP-compatible Bluetooth headphones, and Audio Video Remote Control Profile
(AVRCP) to remotely control A/V equipment such as TVs and Hi-Fi equipment.
Conclusion
For users craving a QWERTY keyboard phone, the SCH-U740 is the best choice
with a fair mix of networking opportunities, entertainment functions, specifically
text-based ones. But with a focus on maximizing the use of its QWERTY keyboard,
the menus and navigation systems are not streamline enough for a user looking
to quickly run through emails, text messages and photos.
